About
The menu at the Cookhouse changes with the seasons, providing varying tastes that rely on the ingredients from local farmers. Start off with choices from the oyster bar or soup and salad offerings for lighter flavors. Small plates include fried boudin balls, African Spiced Cauliflower, Cajun cracklins and more. The main dishes at the Cookhouse include flavorful options like the New Orleans BBQ shrimp and Smoked Duck Breast. The wine and beer list is diverse and pairs well with all of the creole flavors.

Opentable confirmed a reservation for me last Saturday 16th Jan. I called many times and kept getting the same voicemail hinting no one generally answers phone calls. When my wife and I got there the place was closed with a chain and lock around the main entrance. I am sorry that they decided to close, but they should have posted the condition on social media for reservations made to that date. To this moment the website and Facebook page show the place as if it continues to be open.
Made reservations and even confirmed. When our party arrived we found the restaurant closed. Very disappointed tat we were not notified about the restaurant being closed. Being compensated in some way for our inconvenience, but I won’t hold my breath. I’ve been to this restaurant several times, and recommend it often, time will tell if I ever return.
Going to miss this excellent restaurant when it closes Dec. 31, 2020
We will forever miss this San Antonio institution. The oysters, the shrimp, the gumbo--all amazing. As a girl from New Orleans, this was where I went for my NO fix. Best of luck to Pieter and Susan in their new ventures. We are looking forward to seeing what's coming.
Big thank you to Chef P for providing San Antonio with an awesome place to enjoy a night of Shrimp and Oysters. Truly a gem in the robust restaurant scene here in SA.
Literally DEE best restaurant I have every been to!
Hostess service atmosphere were amazing. The culinary adventure was top notch! Definitely will be a regular there!
The Mexican Squash was fantastic but that’s the only positive thing I can say about the food. Our entrees took over 30 minutes to come to the table. When we got them they were cold. They offered to give us a glass of wine for the long wait instead of compensating for things that had been ordered. This restaurant was wonderful when it first opened but honestly I was really disappointed for what I paid for tonight.
So so glad we were able to experience the Cookhouse one last time before the transition! Great service and atmosphere and as always, excellent food. So sad to see you go, but looking forward to what is to come ❤️
Don’t go!!!!! The Oysters ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ The risotto ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The best New Orleans food in SA
Great food. Nice ambiance. Helpful waiter. Nice bottle of red. Felt Covid safe.
Best spot in San Antonio. Thank you chef and team.
The Cookhouse is Great place with amazing food. Enjoyed the time I had there. Overall, Love it!
Cookhouse has been a long-time favorite but had not been recently due to COVID. We reserved an outside table and enjoyed a quiet evening on the quaint street-side patio. Service by Ruben was friendly and entertaining as always. We were a little underwhelmed by the escargot Rockefeller starter - not what we expected and a little bland - but loved the complimentary asparagus soup shooter. Meals were delicious as always! Sorry to see Cookhouse closing out in SA - one of its best eateries, but glad some of the favorites will be on the menu at the new Golden Wat. Interested to taste the menu when the new restaurant opens
Great Cajun tastes
This was my first visit, but will definitely be back. The service was wonderful and food was delicious. Highly recommend the BBQ Shrimp--the sauce is out of this world.
Everything was delicious and the ambiance of the restaurant was wonderful.
This place never disappoints and is outstanding in food and service. They are taking COVID precautions and the spacing and distancing is great. Highly recommended in SA!
Jose was our waiter and he made the evening! Very engaged, attentive and gave great recommendation! Food was delicious as always!
Great flavorful food and wonderful service with great jazz music in the background
The food was phenomenal! The shrimp was so amazing, and I typically don’t eat it very often! It was cooked to perfection!! Loved everything! Lamb chops, oysters, even pea risotto. I don’t like peas! I do now!! Beautiful atmosphere and overall great dining experience! Our waitress was super cute and friendly as well! Short curly hair and circle glasses!! Can’t wait to return!
Very impressed with the overall experience. Great restaurant and food. Highly recommend!
We chose to celebrate my husband's birthday at Cookhouse, mainly because he regularly craves their bbq shrimp, one of their specialties which is always on the menu. I had the blackened catfish with saffron cream sauce--delicious! We also shared the crawfish raviolo which was equally amazing. The service is always fantastic as well-- knowledgeable, attentive and friendly.
The owners have also taken every possible precaution during the Covid-19 situation. The atmosphere felt extremely safe while still maintaining its original charming ambiance. Great jazz combo plays on Friday nights. You must try Cookhouse!
The Cookhouse is our favorite restaurant in San Antonio!
This is a great spot for food and the ambiance was beautiful. Went for my husband's birthday and it was absolutely perfect. Little pricey but the quality was worth it.
My husband and I came here for our first anniversary this past weekend. We had been two other times before they remodeled. The new look is very fresh and nice! The food, as always, was delicious - one of a kind. Oysters were on point, both the raw and chargrilled. Boudin balls were a must, and we even asked for extra pickles! We both ordered our entree flounder dish DIRTY... which means it includes BBQ shrimp. Hello, best of both worlds! Our server, Jose, was so much fun and very accommodating. Obviously, we will be back but next time we will specifically request Jose. You have to try this place!
Seated outside and ordered the appetizer of the day - crawfish and rice boudin balls. Bland and mostly rice. The pork cutlet was nicely prepared and delicious. Gumbo had nice pieces of duck but the roux was thick with too much flour. Gumbo roux is difficult to get right and they need to work on this! Somewhat awkward service and lots of flies!
Friendly staff! Music was wonderful.
Nice atmosphere. Very clean. Food was good but the portions won't fill up a good sized guy.
Always our go-to favorite. Charbroiled Oysters, BBQ shrimp, & Catfish. Husband was really down about red beans & rice no longer being on the menu to go with his catfish, but the food was yummy.
Excellent experience!!
We went for dinner and sat outside since the weather was nice. We were seated on the porch and while cozy, lack of air circulation made it stuffy. The food was good but the menu does not have salads or any sides to go with the entrees. The wait staff was very pleasant and the wine list quite affordable. The gumbo was delicious.
With a reservation made for 6:30pm, we sat down promptly. We opted for outdoors with the state of the country. However, I forgot about the mosquitos. Most other restaurants I wouldn't have to worry about the bugs, but here, I had to ask for spray, unfortunately. I feel they could've been a little more prepared or just handled the pesky problem with other preventative means. Timing was quite unfortunate - sat down at 6:30 and did not receive our food until after 8pm. The food was delicious and worth the wait (not sure it would've been the same case if I wasn't in a rush), but by 8pm I was getting hot, uncomfortable and mosquito-bitten. Would I take a client there again? Probably not any time soon. But for a good meal, I'll recommend it to others.
Great ambiance with classic trio jazz ban. Food was delicious, everything was clean, everyone was friendly.
Our favorite place to celebrate any occasion! Skylar is the sweetest and so attentive. Forever recommend!
Fabulous food and service.
Awesome food. They never disappoint the escargot is a must!!
This was our second visit, again Jose' was our server and once more, he made it a dining experience. They have a marvelous staff there. Our appetizers were very tasty. My daughter and I had the lambs chops...mmmm. My only critique is my granddaughter's smoked duck appeared to be a smaller portion than when I had it. Although The Cookhouse is a little pricey, I highly recommend it for special occasions. It is definitely one of our favorite places to dine.
Awesome cuisine and customer service.
Great food. The service was attentive. We enjoyed our meal.
