About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
The Cookhouse serves up seasonal menus inspired by New Orleans culture. Stop in for dinner, and discover a quaint location that’s ideal for a quick bite or spending time with friends and family while enjoying wine and beer. We are small restaurant with only 60 seats. Providing an intimate and cozy setting, with dim lighting. Owners Peter and Susan focus on the nostalgia of their New Orleans memories, and bring them to San Antonio.
The menu at the Cookhouse changes with the seasons, providing varying tastes that rely on the ingredients from local farmers. Start off with choices from the oyster bar or soup and salad offerings for lighter flavors. Small plates include fried boudin balls, African Spiced Cauliflower, Cajun cracklins and more. The main dishes at the Cookhouse include flavorful options like the New Orleans BBQ shrimp and Smoked Duck Breast. The wine and beer list is diverse and pairs well with all of the creole flavors.

Opentable confirmed a reservation for me last Saturday 16th Jan. I called many times and kept getting the same voicemail hinting no one generally answers phone calls. When my wife and I got there the place was closed with a chain and lock around the main entrance. I am sorry that they decided to close, but they should have posted the condition on social media for reservations made to that date. To this moment the website and Facebook page show the place as if it continues to be open.

Made reservations and even confirmed. When our party arrived we found the restaurant closed. Very disappointed tat we were not notified about the restaurant being closed. Being compensated in some way for our inconvenience, but I won’t hold my breath. I’ve been to this restaurant several times, and recommend it often, time will tell if I ever return.

We will forever miss this San Antonio institution. The oysters, the shrimp, the gumbo--all amazing. As a girl from New Orleans, this was where I went for my NO fix. Best of luck to Pieter and Susan in their new ventures. We are looking forward to seeing what's coming.

The Mexican Squash was fantastic but that’s the only positive thing I can say about the food. Our entrees took over 30 minutes to come to the table. When we got them they were cold. They offered to give us a glass of wine for the long wait instead of compensating for things that had been ordered. This restaurant was wonderful when it first opened but honestly I was really disappointed for what I paid for tonight.
