The Chef and I
Folks can choose to order off the menu or do a chef’s tasting seven days a week.
We offer a chef’s tasting at two levels: five or seven courses; a culinary experience comprised of what’s in season and what the chefs are inspired to share with you that day.
Additionally, we offer regular menus for lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Executive Chef Chris Rains and his staff carefully curate these menus seasonally.
Counter (Show Kitchen) seating is limited and generally requires a reservation. If you desire Counter (Show Kitchen) seating, please select "counter" seating when you make your reservation.
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Any reservations cancelled within 24 hours of the reservation date/time is subject to a $20 per seat charge.

Had an incredible meal. Service was excellent, food was perfect! Looking forward to our next visit already! Wonderful recommendations from our server, Melissa.
It was an authentic and different dinner. The food was great. :)
Was surprised the Chef on our side uses his bare hands on everything! Think that surprised me. The duck was not flavorful and tasted gamey. Overall everything else was great!
Friends from Ohio were amazed by how good their food was!
We eat at The Chef and I every chance we get. It never disappoints.
Excellent food, and an amazing experience. Would recommend highly
One of the best meals I had while visiting Nashville.
Loved this place so much so that we returned the following day. We ordered a lot of small bites and everything was delicious. Friendly and warm staff.
Best place to have a real Chef tasting menu in Nashville.
Easily the best meal we had in Nashville. My wife had seafood bisque and hanger steak, I had 5 course tasting menu. Every dish was thoughtful and creative, seasoned and cooked properly, and just a pleasure to eat. My favorites from the tasting menu were the buffalo tongue and octopus, so good and probably stuff I wouldn’t order on my own so glad they put it out there on the tasting menu. Almond butter cake for dessert was one of best desserts I can remember. Drinks and service also both on point. Went to husk the night before after hearing rave reviews. Wasn’t bad or anything, just totally unmemorable and kind of boring. Every dish at the chef and I had pop and was super flavorful.
Out of town visitors.
Wow. Highly recommend. The food was great, the staff was wonderful. Nothing but positives from our experience. I will 100% have the elk again
The Chef and I has become my favorite restaurant in Nashville. I recommend sitting at the Chef's Counter. The experience and food are both outstanding.
My experience on this trip was again fantastic. We were greeted with a friendly hello immediately upon entering and seated at the counter where we participated in healthy banter with the chefs as they answered every question we had about the food, its source, and how it was being prepped and cooked. A Sunday brunch go to spot for sure.
We have been to the Chef and I many times. We brought our friends there last night to show off one of our favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, it was an off night.
The cauliflower appetizer was not good. Half of the cauliflower was roasted to perfection. The other half was cold and barely done. The arugula salad was too spicy to enjoy.
My Elk entree was barely warm (and to be fair I did not let the waiter know about it). The only entree that our friends thought was good was the hangar steak (the other had the veal).
This will not prevent us from dining there again, however we wanted to let the restaurant know of our experience.
On a positive note...... our waiter Mike was really good!
First visit to Nashville and we were so excited to visit - did not disappoint. Great service and cocktails - the Dave Grohl and Bobby McGee were favorites. Duck poutine. Caprese salad and short ribs were also highlights. Loved the long community tables for our group and visibility into the kitchen too. If you visit Nashville - put it on your must-do list.
Spectacular! I had read the reviews and expected a lot but it actually exceeded them. Yes the lobster bisque was great, so were the scallops and almond cake too but looking at the dishes being prepared because I sat countertop I dont think you can make a wrong choice. Moreover the staff looks like they are having fun, were genuine, and made a guy eating alone because he was on a business trip feel like he was hanging with friends. Bravo to you all and a sincere thanks.
Experienced the brunch yesterday and came back for dinner.
Counter seating is the perfect spot to watch the chefs prepare the meals. Staff are great!!
Meals exceptional!! Scallops and Elk the perfect entrees
I would eat there every night and twice on a Sunday !!
My son and I were visiting Vanderbilt and had an amazing meal at The Chef and I . I would highly recommend sitting at the counter to view the food prep !!! So delicious!!!
Excellent amazing brunch
Duck/Waffles to die for!! The Short Rib Benny fantastic! Bottomless Mimosa the only way!! Coffee excellent!
Great fun staff!!
Going back for dinner!’
It came recommended and did not disappoint. The roasted cauliflower toast was incredible, cocktails were fantastic and the overall experience was great. We would definitely go back and try the tasting menu.
We did the 7 course with wine pairing. Everything was wonderful.
Great service. Noise ok for conversation. Small plates were best. Lobster roll great. Smoky smell in restaurant permeated clothes. Had to leave outside to air out and then wash. Overall it was good
The food was so fresh and tasty! The service was great and everyone was so welcoming and personable. We will definitely be back!
Food was very inconsistent. One dish was too salty and the next didn’t have any at all. We had really hi hopes after reading the reviews.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! The food was just perfection! The chefs menu is a MUST! Service was incredible!
My husband & I came here for our anniversary dinner. We booked a reservation over a week in advance. Our table wasn't ready when we got there, but no huge deal. The service was slow from getting drinks, to getting our appetizer to getting our main course. Then, when our main course came out, my husband's scallops were clearly over cooked but we were so hungry we didn't bother to send them back. We never complained but the staff did acknowledge that their service was lacking, so we did get a free dessert. For the price you pay for this restaurant, we expected higher quality food & service. We won't be returning.
It was an amazing overall experience that exceeded expectations. The service and food were exemplary. I was recommended the Shrimp & Grits and it was outstanding! If you get there while still in season, Chef Liz's Dark Chocolate Bread Budding is devine :).
Amazing food and service. They ran pretty behind seating us, but made up for it with a complimentary appetizer. Definitely sit at the counter--culinary wizardry up close!!!
This was a restaurant where my girlfriend and I dined about 3 years ago, while it was located at the previous location in Lenox Village. It had sentimental value and was an experience which was frequently recalled with fondness. We loved the intimate nature, the food was delicious, and more than anything else, the continuous interaction with the chefs and other customers at the chef’s counter during the preparation of the meal made the evening one that was unforgettable. The new location in the gulch is a little bigger, with much more food prep space, but which allows virtually no interaction with the individuals preparing the food. It’s just a restaurant with an open grill where you can watch the food get made. We were very disappointed by the new format. the food was fine, but not memorable. Elk tenderloin was delicious and cooked perfectly, but was entenched in a sauce that didn’t allow for the enjoyment of the meat itself. Lobster bisque was lukewarm, at best. Each of us had a drink at the bar, an appetizer, salad, and entree, and the total for the night was $220+. Based on this experience, we will opt for one of the nice steakhouses in Nashville in the future for special occasions, and will likely not be returning to Chef and I.
Such a cool space and the food was amazing. Very big portions. I sat at the Counter and had a great conversation with the chefs and that was a great experience to watch them cook and ask them questions. My server Kendall was lovely. I would highly recommend.
First time at The Chef and I for us. Amazing food, great service. Everyone in the group of 6 raved about dining experience.
Tasting menu was fantastic and the open kitchen made for a fun and engaging experience! Hip space, amazing food without any of the stuffiness. Each chef spoke with us and made for a special experience. They were able to accommodate gluten free also. The fig I e cream was truly the very best ice cream I have ever tasted..
The Chef and I was absolutely exceptional. My wife and I had the tasting menu with wine pairings. Highly recommend.
Great food. Great interaction with the staff. Top notch staff + experience.
Best meal I've ever had! I ate here on a trip last month and knew when I came back for a girls' trip this was #1 on my list of places to take my friends. Both times the food was absolutely wonderful!
Fantastic food. Sat at the counter overlooking the kitchen. Great experience. Chefs were engaging and clearly love their jobs. Waiter was excellent. One of the best meals in Nashville. Would definitely go back.
Cocktails and bartenders were great. Overall decent food but my daughter’s scallops were so salty she couldn’t eat the dinner. Fortunately they took it off the bill. But it was her 17th birthday so that was kind of a bummer and they didn’t bring piece of cake w/ candle to celebrate which I thought they said they would when I told them it was her birthday.
