The Chef and I
Folks can choose to order off the menu or do a chef’s tasting seven days a week.
We offer a chef’s tasting at three levels: three, five, or seven courses; a culinary experience comprised of what’s in season and what the chefs are inspired to share with you that week.
Additionally, we offer regular menus for lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Executive Chef Chris Rains and his staff carefully curate these menus seasonally.
Counter (Show Kitchen) seating is limited and generally require a reservation. If you desire Counter (Show Kitchen) seating, please indicate in the special requests section of your reservation.
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. Any reservations changed/ cancelled within 24 hours of that reservation is subject to a $20 per seat charge.

The experience was great but some of the food was a little too different for me. Overall I would recommend for anyone willing to try something new.
Very friendly server and cool space. It is very loud! We could hardly hear members of our party speak. We would recommend some noise reduction material in the ceiling. Open kitchen is fun to watch!
It was our first time, after reading great things about the restaurant. We went for brunch on a Sunday. We were very impressed with the food and the service. True gourmet but not overpriced for the quality. We liked having the choice between the prix-fixe 4-course tasting or à la carte ordering. The portions were generous for both the tasting menu and the shareable plates. It’s a beautiful space inside and the service was outstanding. Everyone there is obviously proud of what they’re creating. We WILL return.
The teres major and beef tar tar were to die for! I also tried the other meals at the table and the tuna, sea bass, and pork tenderloin were all delicious. You really can’t go wrong here! Great vibe, delicious food. All around awesome spot.
Starting about 6:30 sitting at the corner of the bar, we four had drinks followed by small plates, then entrees. Both times I’ve been there, my favorite small plate was the orange duck confit wonton rangoon, though the Brussels sprouts are also delicious. The seared ahi tuna was excellent, as was the red snapper, the fish of the day. By about 8:00, the noise level had increased dramatically & it was really hard to hear one another. Still, we were sorry we didn’t have room for dessert - the options were great!
The food here is amazing! Chef Sarah talked to us all night and made us feel at home.
Ate there with 2 friends. I had the 5 course tasting menu, my two friends ordered off the regular menu. We shared what each other ordered. Interesting combinations - burrata with peaches, charcuterie plate has house smoked salmon, local cheeses, made in house prosciutto, smoked honey, etc. Very interesting and tasty.
Excellent selection of wines by the glass (more than a dozen whites, same with the reds). Nice selection of bottles as well. They have rare bourbons by the flight.
Service was great, without being cloying.
Chef came over a couple of times to ask how we were doing, engaged him in conversation about his background, training, etc.
Strongly recommend sitting at the counter so you can watch food being prepared and plated. Makes for a more complete dining experience.
Great spot for lunch!
Well, we were in town visiting friends. We stayed in The Gulch and were delighted to find "The Chef and I"! We did some research and decided this probably was the place for us...Boy were we correct! We made reservations through Open Table and got seats at the counter. We were welcomed by the Valet, who opened the door for us even though we walked up! We were a little early for our 6:30 reservation but were promptly greeted and asked if I was "Andy", and when I replied yes, was told they were expecting me. We were seated at the counter and were so fortunate to have the Chef/Owner cooking in right front of us! Chris and his entire staff were absolutely perfect! All were friendly, personable and willing to tell us about all that was being prepared as well as the bourbon in the Bourbon Flight.
The food was excellent as was the dessert. We texted our friends who live in town and told them, if you have not tried "The Chef and I"...DO IT!!!

The set up is unique. There are 2-4 tables for regular seating. The rest are high top tables. The best seats are arranged around a u-shaped bar that surrounds the kitchen, so you can watch the chefs at work. Unfortunately we were sat at the end of a long high top table next to the entrance. We were constantly bombarded by entrances and exits. The 3, 5, & 7 course meals are where you are able to get tastings of the Chef’s creations. I chose the 3 course and ordered a caprese salad, excellent salad. There is a huge price disparity between the 3 options, $45, $85, $115. The 3 courses were seared tuna, another I’ve forgotten, and duck. The chef was kind enough to swap my third, duck for scallops, per my request. The scallops were amazing, the rest less so. The dessert, carrot cake, was dry. If you want a large meal, order off the menu. I left the restaurant still hungry. If you’re looking for something new, The Chef & I is worth a try.
One of our favorite restaurants. Everything we've ever tried there has been off the charts. Happy to see them doing so well in The Gulch!

Chef and I was an amazing dining experience that takes you beyond another meal at an awesome restaurant but creates a wonderful experience that makes you feel apart of the preparation. The host and chef's and wait staff are so accommodating and informative. My husband and I shared the 7 course tasting menu and a salad. We almost couldn't eat it all. Great experience! highly recommend!!
Love the vibe of this restaurant but was disappointed with the food. We had scallops, duck, and beef tartare and unfortunately all of the food was extremely salty. The environment was so good that we may give it another chance to see if maybe it was just a bad night with the food because we had read great reviews prior to making the reservation.
What a great night, the food is delicious and sitting at the bar completes the experience. Loved it and will recommend to anyone visiting Nashville.

Went to the Chef and I 2 nights ago. My husband is very picky and for the first time ever he ate goat cheese and cauliflower and he loved it. What a talented Chef!! I had the 5 course tasting menu. I just love to have a bunch of small plates of meticulously prepared inventive food! The scallops with the candied orange in a burre blanc were to die for. The hanger steak over chimichurri was incredible. The orange almond cake was like a moist fresh baked cookie. The candied carrots on the heirloom carrot cake were devine. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place. Our waiter was phenomenal, we just let him make all the choices for us and he did a fantastic job. The place is very noisy and sometimes it is hard to carry a conversation but it all just adds to the liveliness of the place. Loved the old record albums on the wall in the bathroom too!

This place is special in that the food is wonderful without being pretentious. A great added dimension is watching the chefs prepare the meal in front of you!
One of the top restaurants in Nashville
I have been a Chef & I fan for quite some time. It's a little out of the way for me to use for business meals, but it worked out very well this time. The taquitos are the BOMB! The pattymelt was off the hook good! The side potatoes were so good, and the portion was HUGE! I will try to make it back every chance I get!
Excellent food and presentation. Unique flavors. Best carrot cake...ever. High top chairs not the best for comfort. Staff great.

I absolutely hated the seating. The food was really really good. The staff was very nice. But I could literally feel the strangers to my left and right. Great if you have a party of 12. If not, you will be sitting w strangers, hearing every word of their conversation, and they are also hearing yours. I won’t go back because of this.
The food was decent. The drinks were mediocre at best. The service was pretty good. Overall, though, the biggest problem is that this place is EXTREMELY overpriced. I have no problem paying $300 for 2 people when you get very nice food and a few drinks, but everything had best be amazing. This place just doesn’t make that mark. Cut the price in half and I think it would be perfect.
Amazing culinary experience! Watching Chef Rains at work is an absolute pleasure and the food is outstanding. Highly recommend the tuna steak ! Less impressed with the dessert though. But we will definitely be back
My fiance and I were visiting from LA and found The Chef & I on Yelp. The concept was intriguing and we were ready to spend a little extra money on dinner since it was my fiance's birthday. This place turned out to be everything we could have hoped for and more! The cauliflower and goat cheese appetizer was literally the most delicious thing I have ever eaten and the chef ended up making me a special dish from scratch since I am vegetarian. The service was amazing and we even made friends with the gentlemen sitting next to us who ended up buying us dessert for my finace's birthday! The rosemary and thyme ice cream with balsamic drizzle was TOO DIE FOR. We definitely spent more money than we normally ever would, but I thought the entire experience was so worth it.
We did the 5 course tasting menu. I must say the morsels they provided on each plate were very good for the most part - a few of them excellent. But paying that kind of $ for a very loud, tight seated place that looks like it was in a garage is not for me. I am sure others would like it but for what we did - I was frankly nauseated paying that much. We ended up going somewhere else to finish dinner the food was that scarce.
We will never go here again. We decided to split the 7 course offering that they were known for and it took two hours to get the first four courses, which were good but nothing special. They forgot to give us our fifth and we had to flag down the manager, and then we just gave up. Not worth the time or the money. They were kind enough to charge us for just three courses but it was a waste of time and money.
My husband and I went with another couple and sat at the counter. They placed us on a corner so that we could still talk to each other, which was great! It was a little warm as we were seating near the grills, etc. Our waiter was outstanding, very informative and attentive! We did the 8 course tasting and it was a great way to sample lots of different foods (the menus online are out of date and so is the pricing). We were hoping for a tasting menu of dessert foods but that is not offered, so hopefully it will be added soon; we made our own tasting by ordering 4 different desserts so we could try a variety! This is a very up-scale restaurant that has a very casual vibe. This is certainly a place we would return again and again.
My husband and I had a wonderful meal! We shared the 7 course meal; it was excellent. If you’re in a hurry or very hungry, order your own main course. We loved everything, though. Next time, we’ll share a bottle of wine and then each have our own main course. No regrets, however! We’ll be back.

We loved the Chef and , my only complaint, and it’s not with the restaurant, was that I got full around course 4 of the 7 course tasting.
We had a couple of appetizers and that did us in.
I would highly recommend it but caution people to pace themselves .

I was in Nashville on business, and have never before dined the same place twice. Chef and I was an exception! This place is amazing. Genuine friendly greeting and service. You have to sit at the counter. Watching Chef and Peter and the gang work is incredible. Melissa the server and her daughter the food runner with a smile like the Cheshire cat, all so inviting. Melissa knew I did not eat mammals and had the Amouse Bouche modified with the house smoked salmon... Crazy good. The food.... so hard to decide. The salads are all delicious and abundant, Sauteed peaches and Burratta, delicious. First night I was undecided between duck and the Ahi, Melissa convinced me to go with the Ahi. Perfectly seared and served with a chilled avocado, lime rice.. WOW!, I went back 2 nights later though for the duck... equally as impressive. Dessert... Olive Oil and Rosemary ice cream... WHAAAAT? Absolutely a delicious dessert.
A friend of mine who lives in Nashville said to me "You probably had the best dining experience in this are of Nashville" I would have to agree. Oh and prices... The value here is something you won't find anywhere else. Reasonable prices and such generous portions.

The staff is humble, genuine, gracious and friendly. Food is creatively prepared, plated and served. Prices are very very reasonable. A must in Nashville.
Chef Chris made us the most delicious Shrimp and Grits for Sunday brunch. All fresh ingredients prepared in front of us at the counter. Big chunks of bacon, fresh tomatoes, cream, shrimp with spices sautéed in butter. Fantastic- we will definitely be dining at The Chef & I again.
