We came for the hot chocolate bar, but also enjoyed the ambiance, view and great service. In particular, the Point Judith Calamari Cookpot was outstanding. I also loved the Winter Citrus dessert that was paired perfectly with the Newport Vineyards Vidal Blanc dessert wine. We are repeat customers who live in the area.

The bread loaf and cheese plates were divine. The butter was heavenly. But then, the burger was disappointing because the bun was very dry. They charge you 12 extra dollars for truffle fries so you would expect SOMETHING extra. Trust me it is not worth it at all. They were dry and you could hardly taste a zest of truffle. Definitely money down the drain for the fries. I still get angry thinking about this. The place was not busy at all and somehow, service was EXTREMELY slow. I had to beg another waiter twice to have him send us our assigned waitress. It took her 1hour to take our order for the main course. At the end, she kept forgetting to bring my friend a box to take the rest of her food home (we waited an extra 15 min after paying). If we were at a cheaper place, i wouldnt be bothered by those flaws. But this was an expensive place so when I pay 36$ for a burger and 12$ extra for dried truffle fries, I expect waiters to be more efficient.
If I will come back to the Chanler I think I will stick to the hot cocoa bar. You can access that without going for lunch. It was divine. You can sit and look at the beach or go on the cliff walk. That is definitely worth it. It was delicious and smooth.

As always my experience at The Chanler is top notch. The staff are always pleasant and attentive. The seating arrangement in the patio was excellent. Very comfortable for the season. The decorations where also a delight. Now I enjoy martinis and the french pear martini was delicious. I started with the oysters. Very fresh. My entree was the sword fish. Just melted in your mouth. Will be back again soon!

I was so pleased to bring my sons there for Thanksgiving. The staff was very attentive, brought me a small personal bottle of wine to accommodate my tastes and provided us with professional and friendly interactions.

Prices were a bit high. My salad which was described as having "root vegetables" had 3-4 very thin slices. that's it....mostly ordinary greens. For 16$ I do not think it represents good or even reasonable value.

We came up to Newport for lunch when I couldn't get reservations a closer place we love. Wife had the filet and I the swordfish. Wanted to lick the bowl, it was so good. We didn't do an appetizer, which I regret (as I was more hungry that I thought I'd be), but we remedied that by splitting a desert. This was the only flaw in the meal. It was a chocolate biscuit (basically), with various classes of mousse and caramel. Darn near needed a saw to cut the biscuit (but we managed, as the flavors were there). View was awesome, and worth the trip.

We ate in the newly-heated "outdoor" cafe, which was enclosed by large plastic sheets. Given that the gale was blowing in off the ocean, the room heated up quite well, after about 15 minutes. Service was polite and efficient. My wife and I both had the burger offering, which was cooked to order and very tasty (though the buns were a bit bulkier than we needed). The ambience, once heated, was pleasant, and provided a great view of the ocean--though it was nearly dark when we were seated. Though the items were on the "pricey" side, our over all experience was very good.

We have always loved this place - especially the bar (and our bartender Kevin). Before and after dinner we were at the bar and it didn’t disappoint. Dinner however was another matter - the cafe is now on the terrace and it definitely loses some ambiance. We went for restaurant week and both selected the onion soup and spent the $10 up charge for the filet. The soup was good - hot and great flavor. The steak came sliced with some vegetables and a whipped something that was either potatoes or something else (couldn’t tell). The whipped something and the vegetables were cold and not very appetizing. The steak was tender and had an ok flavor but as a whole the entree was a miss for us. Also they seemed to be a bit understaffed for servers - people were working had and trying their best but definitely could have used some more help. As we said - love this place - rooms, location, bar - but next time dinner will be somewhere else.

The hotel is gorgeous, but don’t be fooled by this restaurant. The food was the worst I’ve ever had at a restaurant. My pasta was like a reheated lean cuisine and my partners brisket sandwich was like burnt ash.

Definitely not worth the $$$. Steer clear.

I ignored the bad reviews because I really wanted a spectacular birthday dinner overlooking the sea. It was 70 degrees out but they had heavy plastic curtains obscuring the view and making it feel very cheap. But alas… it was actually quite expensive, for tiny tiny tiny portions. There’s no “contorno” part of the menu to lead you to believe that the “sides” would be max 2 forkfuls. Get a salad if you want anything besides your meat… which will be about 2 to 3 ounces. : ( it would be one thing if they’d set the menu up as courses, but these were entrees, with entree prices. I’m all for tiny exquisite plates, but this wasn’t that either…

This setting is outstanding; comfortable and beautiful. We were slightly disappointed by the limited meal choices and, though the food was tasty, it was not 5-star. Overall a good experience, just not an exceptional one.

Although The Chanler is a lovely venue, we had extremely slow service. We waited an hour and a half for sandwiches and the bread was hard a rock. The meat was dry and did not taste well at all. The one thing that was awesome was the iced tea. We are officially taking this Restuarant off of our list as this is the THIRD EXPERIENCE in a row that is lack luster and disappointing.

This place is only good when there is a view on a nice day when the plastic is out of the way. Don’t ever go for dinner when it is dark out. The room is unimpressive. The food is not good especially at the price point. View great.

Perfect: excellent service, spectacular food. We asked for a great view on open table and either they had a different opinion about the view, or they didn’t notice the request, but either way they were happy to accommodate us upon request. I absolutely will return to dine at the Chanler.

We ate in the cafe and server’s name was Pat. She did a fantastic job, very attentive and helped explain some gluten free options. View was to die for and probably just a handful of couples. Food was excellent. Here’s my only knock, we brought our own bottle expecting a corkage fee. They are usually reasonable. Instead I got hit with a $75 fee that I wasn’t expecting. I probably should have asked, but I’ve never had this experience before.

Beautiful relaxing atmosphere and delicious lobster and scallop pasta. Portion was just right, but quite pricey. Long wait to be served, but we weren't in a hurry and they compensated with a complimentary bread course.

The cafe at the Chanler was wonderful from start to finish. Our waitress, Kat, was lovely and immediately wished us a happy anniversary while also noting it had just been my birthday (I’m not sure how she knew, maybe open table?). Anyway, we placed drink orders and some oysters, which were superb. Then we asked for the house petite loaf of bread which was excellent. For entrees my husband had the Campanele pasta. While it was expensive it was absolutely delicious and worth the money as the lobster chunks were bountiful and delicious and the scallops were out of this world. I had the swordfish which was meaty and yummy. For “dessert” we opted to order some truffle French fries because we saw another table eating the burger with fries, and they were an excellent ending. Everyone was friendly and lovely, and all of the staff were wearing masks, which is something many other restaurants in town were not doing. Overall we will definitely be back.

My husband and I were traveling to Newport to visit with our son and wanted to have a nice lunch before seeing him. This was the last minute reservation so we ended up eating in the bar. Aside from that, everything was perfect. I had the best grilled cheese sandwich of my life and my husband's sandwich was good as well. We would definitely come back. The view, the atmosphere, everything was just perfect.

Gorgeous setting. Way too bright at night?! Felt sorry for the waiter. Seriously understaffed. Our food was mediocre at best. People next to us sent theirs back. Highly over-priced. Best thing about the whole experience is that I got a glass appropriate for the style of wine I ordered.

Our meal was ok. The lowest rating goes to the Gazpacho which was watery, not chunky. The burger was good and the halibut was tasty but probably 4 ounces at best. The wine list included some reasonably priced wines which was good. Server was good but probably took close to an hour for entrees to arrive. Ambience not great. Food pricey.

The hotel was gorgeous, and the terrace had a great view overlooking First Beach. A little sad that they had their clear tarp walls set up, because it was a warm day (in the 70s) and it would have been nice to have an unobscured view. We enjoyed our cocktails (paloma & the "Something Sweet") and the oysters. Our only complaint is that the waitress kept pressuring us to order food (she came back at least 3 times to ask), but it was 3pm and we were only there for drinks & apps before our dinner reservation elsewhere (plus the drinks & oysters were already $60!) so we thought it was a little unnecessary of her.
