The Bull Valley Roadhouse
The Bull Valley Roadhouse serves American roadhouse food prepared from scratch with century-old techniques using fresh ingredients from our favorite small farms. A beacon at the end of a canyon road in the historic dock town of Port Costa, the roadhouse welcomes locals, travelers and adventurous day-trippers alike in its 1897 landmark dining room and bar. Stepping into the saloon-like rooms, guests can sense more than 100 years of hospitality. The proprietors strive to maintain that warm tradition and leave everyone feeling relaxed, well fed and eager to return. Look for us under the golden bull.
Sunday brunch served from 10:30 am through 2:00 pm.
I’ve had brunch at Bull Valley Roadhouse twice now and it is one of my favorites. Definitely get the biscuits and gravy. You’ll be glad you did.
Enjoyed the drive down to port costa. Food was ...well, very eclectic with limited choices. Lots of people enjoying the out-of-the-way location. Add eggs bennys and we’ll be back!
this is the best restaurant in the entire bay area.
The menu was excellent but the meat items we ordered were either over or under cooked. Everything else was just wonderful!
It was a long drive over a windy road, but worth the drive. Excellent food.
Drinks were very good as usual. Ordered a medium-rare ribeye which came very rare and overly salted but was none the less delicious probably because of the quality of the meat. Fried chicken was top notch. The pumpkin croquet, fries, Brussels sprouts, scalloped potatoes, honey ice cream, well everybody loved the meal. The service was excellent with enough staff to cover anything one needed for an enjoyable dinner.
This was our third time there and it’s clear something with the food has changed. All the food was over done both cooked and spiced excessively. Kinda bummed because the restaurant is such gem.
All of the food and drinks were on point for my birthday dinner.
Mussels and salads were a hit, my favorite. Fried chicken and pork stew, steak also great recommendations.
It was a fun night. The food was good. Everything is served Family style. Portions serve two maybe three people.
Love this place!
Love this restaurant. Off the beaten-path, speakeasy vibe. Great cocktails and family style food that is nearly perfection. Pork chop was amazing. Been here several times for anniversary and always wonder why we don’t come back more!
In general we love Bull Valley Roadhouse. This was our seventh or eight time and every time we keep coming back because of the service, ambiance, and delicious food. Bull Valley has an amazing collection of cocktails and in our previous experiences the servers always were enthusiastic to help us pick the right one. Tonight, the guidance was poor. Later we had to wait to “catch” our server to order our second drinks.
Bull Valley is a family-style restaurant where every dish is shared by all at the table. In our previous experiences we always had enough of a dish to share, the portion size was always right. Tonight the salmon we had was very little for our party of five (I think it was a 3 or 4 oz portion). Lastly, the pork chop was very dry, and since nobody checked on us during the meal, we couldn’t even give feedback until after the meal. We believe tonight was an outlier and we sure will return to Bull Valley at least one more time, hoping for the excellent service and food we are accustomed to.
Although some of our food choices ended up being unavailable, Claire made sure that they give their best service. We ended up being seated at a table all by ourselves (14 of us) and we had the best time. Thank you!
One of my favorite restaurants in the entire country. Drove two hours and rented a hotel just to meet a friend and show him this place.
Wonderful evening as usual for Bull Valley - we always recommend this place to our friends and family. Tamir is the outstanding star, he makes exceptional cocktails and makes the entire dining experience exceptional with his recommendations.
Will order differently next time. Portions are enough to share. Fun cocktails from the bar.
Delicious food, great service. Wonderful night!
Disappointed. I’ve had better food here in the past. Brunch. Salad was awful. Not mixed greens as noted, only romaine. Where was the fennel? Couldn’t find anything as it was swimming in dressing. Gave up on it. Side of ham was just okay. Nothing interesting. Biscuits were good, so there’s something positive. Nothing about this meal made me want more. Won’t be back. Sorry.
These are our opinions only. This was our second family (3 of us) visit here to see if consistent with first impressions. The coctails were generous but expensive. Entrees: steak, salmon, and fried chicken. Also had potatoes au gratin, wedge salad, clams, pot de crem, and olive oil cake, The portions were on the large side and quality of food was OK to good, though not particularly creative. The menu is definitely too small and prices the opposite. The room was so noisy that one had to essentially yell across the table to be heard. Wait staff seemed overstretched, though pleasant. The parking is limited, and the parking lot for most cars is like a moonscape, such are the craters doubling as pot holes. Some work here please! Overall, we were disappointed. Not likely to drive from Walnut Creek for this again. Interesting building with lots on the wall to feed the eyes (old photos, antlers, etc.). But overall was consistent with first impressions. We think there are many better values in the Bay Area.
We continue to bring new friends to the Bull Valley Roadhouse! The quality of food and service is outstanding.
The best food ever! Anything that you will have is very good. I highly recommend this place for any important event!
One of my favorite restaurants! Well worth the trip to Port Costa. Delicious food, great service, wonderful ambiance.
Delicious with everything about the meal more than above par. Will go again...
Everyone in our party had a great time. The staff was very accommodating to everyone. We would definitely come back.
Am in love with this place! Worth the trip out of the way. The food is incredible. Great drinks, great wine list. Service is on-point. It’s one of my favorite restaurants ever.
Always amazing and delicious. I love the special feeling that this town and restaurant provide. Everyone needs to know about this place and visit; but not when I want to go because I still want to be able to get a table 😊💕
Superb food! Chairs a little uncomfortable. Great service! A special place
We went as a large group--of ten--and we had an amazing time! The food was generous and ridiculously delicious. One thing was better than the next. The service was also excellent. Loved the atmosphere too. It was the perfect evening. Oh--and don't forget the stellar choice of cocktails and wine. I want to go back now...
We love BVR. The food is fantastic, the service is the best we have ever experienced, and consistent over all the years we have been visiting. Unique cocktails perfectly created add to the ambiance of BVR. The building is old, has a ton of character, but is a bit noisy.
Spent some tome at the bar before my date arrived. Attentive and pleasant. He was late and the hostess adjusted my reservations without a problem and gave me my favorite table. I’ve never been disappointed. It’s my fav in the bay!
Wait staff knowledgeable with the menu. Offered great suggestions for wine pairing. Everyone attentive without being too much. Food beyond fabulous and atmosphere was fun. Will definitely be going back
Went for a birthday brunch. Totally enjoyed our cocktails. I had the Bloody Maria. The food was tasty. A wedge salad and then the mussels were my choices. Delicious!
Enjoyed the great atmosphere and ambiance at Bull Valley. Service was attentive and very friendly. All items ordered were delicious and excellently prepared. We will get back soon with more friends
We love this place! Service is generally good, food is also very good! Love the ambiance. My father was visiting from out of town for Thanksgiving and we brought him here as a treat. This time we ordered the pork chop which runs about $45. The waitress mentioned that the chop comes well marbled. Okay, a good cut of meat should be well marbled, but this cut was half fat. That is not marbling. We mentioned it to her and she said that is why she mentioned the well marbled. While the flavor was really good I will definitely warn people that half of their chop is waste. The chicken and mushroom ragu were wonderful.
The Bull Valley Roadhouse has been a favorite destination of ours for years, almost back to its original opening. Located in the tiny hidden time capsule town of Port Costa, it's located in an old Victorian building that has been lovingly preserved and furnished with all kinds of funky Victorian charm, making you feel like you wandered into a saloon circa 1880. If the food and drink were mediocre, it would still be worth visiting just for the decor and ambiance. Happily, the food and drink are anything but mediocre.
Cocktails: If you are a fan of pre-Prohibition cocktails, they have you covered, with a number of now obscure but authentic reconstructions of what people actually drank in bars back in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Some of these aren't really to modern tastes, but to balance things out, they also offer a long list of their own craft cocktails, many of which are quite good.
Food: Two things characterize their food, 1) family style portions intended to be shared among the table (including their small plates), and 2) nothing on the menu is fancy, exotic, or groundbreaking, but just about everything they make is the best you've ever had of whatever it is, whether it's scalloped potatoes, Brussel sprouts, or crispy fried chicken.
If driving the winding, bumpy road to and from Port Costa in the dark isn't to your taste, consider hitting their Sunday brunch, which is awesome, and the only time of the week when you can order their excellent Mezcal Bloody Mary.
Our reservation was for 4pm. We were left standing outside in the cold an rain until about 4:20pm while they appeared to be finishing up a staff meeting. Not sure why they couldn’t at least let us inside. Otherwise, food and service were great!
Excellent food, fun cocktails and great service!
Awesome place, Brussels sprouts and pork stew are amazing!
Most enjoyable restaurant in the Bay Area. Go early and enjoy a drink at the Warehouse Bar across the street. It is the most enjoyable "dive" bar -- in the highest complementary sense -- and say hello to the 10 foot tall polar bear.
AmaZing meal & evening! Time & time again it becomes my favorite place.... again & again!!! Thank you Bull Valley!!!♥️
