I don’t like to write bad reviews and I don’t want to discourage people from going, but the brunch setup isn’t done well. It’s right in front of the door and there should be one person for the waffles and one for the omelets. It was confusing. Just my 2 cents
Amazing service, outstanding food. A little pricey, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Asparagus was burnt, steaks had very little taste. My medium filet was charred on the outside. Very disappointing for price point. Much better meal had a Rocketts Landing previously.
We were sad sushi wasn’t on the menu anymore, although pleasantly surprised by vegan options. The server left us needing new drinks for at least 20 minutes. One salad same with extra portion (not ordered) and one came missing half. Food was good, but there are tons of amazing food options in Richmond, Boat House needs to step up the service to compete. We’re looking elsewhere for our next special occasion.
Great food and service
Our reservation was for 12 but our group arrived early- our server had not arrived yet so the bartender offered to wait on our table as it was a slow day. She was fabulous. We were celebrating my Mother In Law's 80th and she gave her lots of extra special attention- which was a huge hit with MIL. Food is always very good there and service was the best this time!
The noise level killed the ambience. The food was amazing the service was amazing and that’s all I can really say about it I’d recommend it to those you like variety of things on the menu as long as they don’t mind a loud environment
Oysters were great as always!
Delicious food and great service. Perfect for a special occasion or casual night out
We celebrated my husband’s birthday with a group of friends. We were seated in a private room with wonderful service. Everyone enjoyed the appetizers, entrees, drinks and desserts. We will be back again!
Delicious foods you can tell are all hand crafted right there in house.
I wish there were a third option other than "yes" or "no" to the question of whether or not I would recommend The Boathouse to a friend. While there's no reason to avoid the place, there's likewise no reason to make a special effort to go there. The food was . . . okay. My buddy and I ordered the crab artichoke dip as a starter, and I had a crab cake sandwich (no bun).
The dip was way too goopy for my taste. I was good for one bite. And the garlic toasts they serve with the dip are unpleasantly garlicky. My crab cake was cooked to the right temperature, but it had at least as much filler as crab, and was just kind of bland.
As for ambiance, The Boathouse could have been a converted Arby's. Just boring.
The best oysters!! Happy hour and oysters oh yes! Great service, great food, excellent martini. But what??? They took the sushi off the menu? Seriously? That sushi was better than any Japanese restaurant. I just know customers are not going to be happy about that...bc I am one of those customers!!!
Skimpy on food serving. No bread offered for meal. Shrimp had a fishy taste and did not seem fresh and overcooked. Mash potato serving was very, very small. Waiter was nice and friendly but took a longtime to get drinks. The original Mojito had a watered down taste. The asparagus was good. For the prices they charge we expected a lot better. Disappointed for celebrating our 58th anniversary. Back to Bone Fish Grill in the future.
Food and service was great but it was absolutely freezing in the restaurant. It was colder inside than outside and when we asked our waitress, she admitted it was cold and said that the wait staff had mentioned it to management but nothing was done. I don’t understand how management would allow not only their employ it also their customers to be uncomfortable. Trying to eat while wearing a coat or having to eat quickly to prevent the good from becoming cold is not the beat way to spend an evening nor the $50 that I spent on just appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks.
Sister leaving after weeklong stay.
Great restaurant... BUT I am VERY disappointed that they ended the Sushi on the menu. This was the best feature of the restaurant...and why we stopped going to the Boathouse on the James. Please add the Sushi back on the menu so I can return to your restaurant.
Took 25 minutes to get our wi e. That was after reminding the waitress twice and being asked by another waitress what wine we ordered followed by a “is that a white or red”..... know your product/menu is what I say! Took 50 minutes to get something off the kids menu (first time it was burnt). This place really needs a makeover on their menu and serious training. The managers excuse was that our server was part time student and did not work very often. Why do you want that person waiting on your tables and costing you customers?! Very bad experience and will not come back.
Would have loved a little larger portion size but tasted great
Horrible service and food quality.
It was great!
Very overpriced mediocre fare. Loud and noisy. Service EXTREMELY slow. Water glasses are miniature. Grilled salmon, calamari, hush puppies were very good. Asparagus was tough, undercooked and had no seasoning. Mashed potatoes were no better than what you would get in any budget-priced restaurant. Skip it! We will never go back.
Food is really bland, very small portions of seafood, and tremendously overpriced. Very disappointing. I don’t have anything positive to say.
Great place. Our server was nice and we were served promptly. However our food could've been hotter... It was still delicious!
The Boathouse did a great job of accommodating our party of 12. We arrived early, and were seated in a nice niche out of the way. Our server was extremely helpful and gave us plenty of time to enjoy our dinner. It was great! Thanks!
Nice décor, mostly attentive staff, clean, good place for brunch. Our only complaint this time was we paid in cash and the waitress assumed we did not want change back. Therefore, we had to wait for the waitress to realize this and bring our change. Maybe no one pays in cash anymore?!
Celebrated my birthday. Was able to sit in the booth with the brick walls. Really nice! Food and service was great. Highly recommend it.
They had good ingredients but not a good chef. The food was put together poorly. Good service. Oysters were good. Good food but mediocre construction ESPECIALLY for that price point.
Company holiday dinner
Food was delish and the service was great as usual
Food was good, however the price is not worth coming back.
Great Service great food
After the passing of my biological mother I discovered she had another child 1 year before I was born. We chose to meet at this location to meet for the first time as he drove in from up north. It turned out to be the best dining experience ever. Our apologies to the establishment and guest as my brother brought to everyone's attention that he was meeting his little sister who found him after 53 years. I will never forget the Boathouse
Always good food. We go for raw oysters. Love them.
The drinks we ordered were inconsistent. Just not right!
Not a crowded mid afternoon lunch, several Christmas party groups so it was a little noisy. The food was tasty. Ordered a meal and asked that a side salad substitute for fries and no bread but when it came, the fries were there, the bread was there along with the full salad - for which we were subsequently charged. It was all tasty, I ate a couple of fries, left the bread but took the entire salad home and I was disappointed that I was charged for their mistake. It seemed so wasteful.
I think The Boathouse has removed it's sushi menu. It is no longer on the website for any of the locations. I was disappointed because since I was out with friends, and not my husband, I was going to get sushi for dinner. I have never had it there, but heard great things. This was the only thing disappointing. My salmon with saffron rice was delicious, but the salmon was a little over cooked. Other than that, everything was good.
Loved the vegan crab cakes
Thanks for having a vegan option
We ordered from the menu, and the food was good. In the next visit, I will try the omelet and waffle bar.
