I might try again after the Covid threat passes but right now, you order off an app at the table and it just seemed strange and not very hospitable. The dining captain spent a lot of time at table explaining how to order on app - so why not just take our order? Not what I expected..
Tacos were the best food item we ordered. Seafood platter was ok. Margarita was so strong I couldnt drink it..
View was the best part of the evening..
I took my husband for Father’s Day and I ordered the salmon and he had the filet. Both dishes were disgusting. The filet wasn’t seasoned and overcooked and so was the salmon. If you’re looking for a nice ambiance The Boathouse is definitely the place to go.
Given co-vid, menu and ordering are now electronic, throughout. Wait staff were helpful and attentive from start to finish, and given that we were ordering via iPhone, we particularly appreciated the advice to order each course separately. Was a bit strange to be billed for each course, but it didn't interfere with the meal, and with the automatic 20% gratuity, when we were finished, we didn't have to wait for the check, which was already recorded. Outdoor venue, with view of the river is very nice, though tables were not very clean. For the price, entree's were so-so. Desserts were best part of the meal. Would recommend with proviso that al fresco lunch is the best bet.

Very cautious and observed Covid guidelines. They are making the best of a difficult situation. Food and service was excellent.

Great food and great atmosphere! We were able to sit outside and the patio area had lots of shade so it was easy to stay comfortable and enjoy.

I understand things have changed however waiting 18 for minutes for drinks, had to get up from the table and find a server to bring us plates. Water took 30 minutes.
We never stayed for entrees. Went to Bbokbinders and had a fabulous time.
That guy that explained the menu ordering system was great and even life him a personal tip, but had to wait forever for drink refills and had very few items to choose from to eat most normal items were not on menu and were not inform until we arrived there
First time out since Covid and the Boathouse did not disappoint. great location, food and service.

Awful service from the manager. Most of the food was fine, however the steak is awful. The manager made it seem as if it was our fault. “You just don’t like the sauce” or “next time just order it without the sauce”

First time trying boathouse and was very impressed with the service and food. Can't wait to go back after COVID-19 is over to try their whole menu.
Order and pay on your phone through an online ordering system. The food came quickly, it was delicious and the views were great. I will definitely be back
It was disappointing with the after Covid-19 changes. The overall experience was “mechanical “ at best. We do all the ordering input on a cell phone, and this restaurant adds an automatic 20% service charge-tip. Beer served , but had to request a cold glass both times ? Open table reservation request for outside patio seating and we arrive, then told outside seating will be a 30 minute wait. Why? They took the reservation, just tell me not possible up front before we arrive..simple. The mechanical ordering process does not support substitutes or specific requests..Finally noted the dinner was a birthday celebration and there is no acknowledgement at all. Just a brief wish would have been appreciated.
Don’t get me wrong, this has always been a favorite restaurant and many prior positive experiences on other dinners.
I just have to describe the extreme disappointment in the June 2020 experience. I will not be back anytime soon.
Our first outing at this restaurant since implementing the COVID-19 procedures. Online ordering was a bit challenging- not sure why paper menus couldn’t be implemented. Having to go into the online process each time we wanted a drink or the next item for our meal- sort of killed the joy of fine dining- food was good- view was awesome! Hopefully wait staff system will return in the near future!
I feel like it is the best value in Richmond and I have been to a lot of them. I would assume is things were normal this place would and should be packed but it wasn't. The food was great, and came in a timely manner. I liked how they adjusted to the quarantine by allowing you to use your phone to order. The waiter i formed us on how to use everything and checked on us frequently, if I knew how to leave a tip on the app I would have. The place itself is in a great location and you can't beat the value you get with the service overall. The view is the icing on the cake, go on a sunny day or evening and you will be satisfied.
The order by cell phone seemed novel but the wait staff seemed confused at every turn. Our appetizers, salads, and entrées all arrived at the same time.

The new online procedures put in place due to COVID delayed service, which then affected the food and drinks (food was not hot, drinks came out after apps and entrees because of the online system).
We did not understand that there were people walking around asking us how everything was, if we had everything we ordered, taking dishes, etc... why can't they just take our order? The online system made the experience weird and not that enjoyable.
We have been to Boathouse before and had great experiences; we will not be back until this COVID mess ends and they go back to normal procedures.
Great spot! They're doing their best with the whole "contactless" thing but it was definitely odd to not have a waiter. Felt a bit like we were eating at an airport. Food was pretty good but the biggest attraction is the view. Probably will be back for drinks and that's about it.
Everything Was Horrible I Could’ve Made It At Home For Less Than The Price The Only Thing That Was Good Was The View..Kyle Was The Only Helpful Person That Solved My Problem.
The shrimp & grits was Amazing and our server Tom did a Fantastic job !
This was our first meal outside our home since the pandemic hit in early March. We had a wonderful brunch overlooking the James River and enjoyed being ‘out’ for a change!
We were thrilled that the Boathouse opened the outdoor section and had tables spaced far apart for social distancing. The contactless ordering and payment process was easy to use and a convenient way to control the pace of drinks, appetizers and entree arrivals. The staff was super friendly and helpful and as always, the food was delicious!
Lovely setting on the river and wonderful food. Feels like a mini-vacation!
I find the process of ordering dinner through an app in my phone terrible. If I want to order a dinner in this fashion I could easily go through a drive through and save a great deal of money. I enjoy going out for dinner and not using my phone but now I can’t do that at the Boathouse. Poor decision to use this method to order.
Thank you for the feedback about the new ordering system. We are currently using mobile ordering to facilitate social distancing, as listed as a best practice in the Governor's Forward Virginia guidelines. I understand that to you it seemed more trouble than it was worth. Please know that we will be mindful of this viewpoint when making future decisions.
A sun shade is needed. Outside dining in full sun is not optimal. Delish meal in full sun? 91 degrees? Get some shades!!!
We have been here several times and the food and service never disappoint. The only thing I would recommend is that since we were required to eat outdoors due to the pandemic, installment of some sort of shades in the patio area would be helpful. I switched chairs so that the sun would not be directly in my eyes, but not all diners would have that option if they had a larger party.
I realize the demands of servicing during Covid-19, however, I'll wait until we have a vaccine allowing open dining before returning. The ordering system on an iPhone was tedious and time consuming. The multiple receipts for everything ordered from drinks to entrees and side dishes was not well received. Your staff spent three times as much time at the table explaining the system (and increasing their exposure) than it would have taken if only the menu were viewed on the iPhone and a single verbal order taken - or perhaps two - one for drinks and the other for food. That said, your staff did the absolute best they could with this onerous ordering system. Not recommending to a friend for the immediate future. I look forward to returning sometime in the more distant future when open dining is back in play.
Great service and food. We were seating on the top patio and the sun was REALLY hot. They have an umbrella holder mounted on the rails but no umbrellas. This did not harm the visit. Overall great food, great drinks.
Girls lunch get together. Went here for the scenery. Beautiful! Clean and the process to order food was easy to use and fast service. Mary was our server and she was fantastic and on top of it all. Food and drinks were delish and couldn’t ask for anything different.
Had a problem with ordering on the phone as the system seemed not to work or my card which I always use, was having problems. But I use it every day. The food was ok, but the Rock fish left a little to be desired. I love rock fish. And the fries were not as good as before? My wife's veggies were really hard and uncooked. Her salmon was ok, not great. I like the ambiance of the boat house, but they have been closed and might take some time to come back.

Out visit was very nice and it was her first time at the boathouse. We sat outside and the view was awesome.
Beautiful views of the river and my Chicken Chesapeake was out of this world. Can't wait to go back. Been there before several times but never on patio.
