    The food was amazing. My salmon was perfectly cooked and the fresh asparagus was crisp-tender. After learning it was our anniversary, we were given a complimentary glass of champagne. The service was amazing. Our server Lourdes was helpful, knowledgeable about the menu, and friendly. We were seated by a window overlooking the water. The three course menu was a great bargain! Will eat there again!!

    We had a great dinner at The Boathouse. The views are gorgeous, and the food was delicious. We also had particularly good service. We were well taken care of which made the evening even better. We have another Boathouse location about 10 minutes from our house, but we make the 40 minute drive to Hopewell for the views.

    Myself and my daughter could hardly hear each other. I was very disappointed since my daughter was visiting from out of town, there was a very large group during dining and they was very loud!!!! My salmon, the menu had a fruity sauce, my salmon had a topping that taste like tomato paste.

    Extremely nice place, but don't care for the 20% charge for a 'tip'. Drinks were good but not as good as last time. Beautiful scenery on the river.

    Food is always delicious. Wait staff struggles due to being assigned too many tables when they also have to wait on large, needy tables. The smaller tables get overlooked. Would have spent more but, ended up leaving after our meal.

    We met friends. And then we met some more... there was a birthday party for a 77yo mom. They invited us to join them in a champagne toast - and then they had too many daiquiris for their crowd - so they shared those as well. It was a family affair! Our food and service were delicious and the view is gorgeous!

    A disappointing experience that could have been so much better. I was in town visiting my mother and decided to bring her here for dinner on Labor Day. The restaurant was not at all busy, with more than half their tables empty at 6pm. We waited at an empty hostess station for 5 minutes before anyone arrived to verify our reservation and seat us at an outdoor patio table with a great view of the James River. While our waiter was a pleasant young man, he showed little interest in us. It took him 10 minutes to arrive with waters and take our drink orders. He disappeared for at least 20 minutes before returning with refills for our water and taking our dinner order. He only revisited our table to deliver our food and never checked on us between courses. He also never cleared the table between course. When he delivered our check, I asked him how long he worked there. He had been there almost a year and shared that they are paid hourly (a 20% gratuity is added to the bill). He said he prefers when it’s not too busy. When my mother responded by saying his shift might go by faster if it’s busy, he replied that he can be in the back on his phone when it’s not busy. The food was good, but nothing too impressive. My mother ordered the clam chowder and broiled seafood combination and I had the chilled seafood tray. The clam chowder was a bit salty, which may have been due to the bacon bits. My mother’s entree consisted of well cooked and seasoned scallops, shrimp, and a crab cake on top of wilted asparagus and some tasty mashed potatoes. My chilled seafood tray was much larger than I expected and was definitively enough food for two people. Raw oysters, mussels, shrimp, and lobster were all cooked well and served with clarified butter and house made cocktail sauce. The butter did congeal very quickly due to sitting on a bed of ice. We finished the meal with an undercooked crème brûlée for dessert. Definitely buyer beware with this restaurant.

    Well worth the drive. Sat at a table outside on the patio area. Gorgeous water/river views and bird life. Even saw a bald eagle! Relaxed atmosphere, friendly, helpful staff. Food was great and coffee was decent. Wheelchair accessible but no separate bathroom for handicap users or families. Only big negative from our point of view. Could definitely use an upgrade! Fair amount of even, flat parking although only 2 designated handicap parking spots. We will definitely be going back.

    Flavorful dishes with great drink selection. Paid 10 dollars for a guaranteed window seat inside , but ended up sitting outside. Much better experience the view was beautiful.

    First time trying Boathouse for lunch, great location and beautiful view! Wonderful staff and we enjoyed the food. A bit pricey for portion size IMHO but it was tasty. Would come again for special occasions!

    We had a lovely meal at the Boathouse! The atmosphere is beautiful and you feel like you are at the beach on vacation. The food is wonderful, the views spectacular and we highly recommend coming from Richmond for an evening to this wonderful restaurant experience!

    Good food overall and great water view with birds and wildlife to enjoy while eating. Great shrimp and creme brulee. Surprisingly the food wasn't top notch like I expected as my first time to The Boathouse so here's some ideas for improvement: The arugula salad had too many hard to eat stalks and not many larger leafy pieces; the crab cakes seemed to be half breading, and the medium filet mignon was very much the rare side of medium-rare and was hard to chew with an off flavor.

    Service was excellent and view is amazing. There were 3 of us dining and each of us was disappointed with dressings and sauces on our dishes. The oysters Rockefellow had almost no parmesan and was in a runny sauce. The zucchini chips were nicely fried but the dip dripped over everything. The small salad was sitting in a puddle of dressing. The fried oysters were excellent as was the salmon... wonderful coffee. I find the prices a bit high but it is in a special location so probably can justify the prices. I do not like the mandatory tip but I was made aware of it several times so it was my choice to reserve there.

    After hearing about the restaurant I took my father for his birthday and we loved it. Although it has a bar it has a nice ambience to it allowing family events to also be nice to have here. The waitress quitta was excellent, our beverages were never empty and our food was delivered quickly. Overall a great experience

    Realizing that everything went up due to COVID, the value of the total experience was a four due to my top shelf gin and tonic with lime that was brought out in a large glass , no lime and watered down with tonic water and ice. Fortunately I was asked if I wanted another type drink in exchange, with a great attitude. Be mindful of the bartender or the mixologist and his/ her experience; otherwise my experience was great! Overlooking the James River at night as my party were enjoying a birthday celebration was great!

    Hit and miss, been here twice. First time, good enough for second visit. Second visit will be awhile until the third visit. Fly in wife's drink and waitress spilled water all over the table. No manager was ever sent over.

    The worse meal out I think I have ever had. We were there for our 59th wedding anniversary and had hoped for a great meal. For $45 I got 3 under cooked shrimp, 3 scallops and what was listed as a crab cake. The "crab" cake had an inside that was some kind of mush. It appeared that it had been rolled in crab meat that covered the outside but I could not see or taste any in the inside. All in all a very dissapointing meal to say the least!!!!

    We ordered "Chilled Seafood Tray" for $75 and noticed that food is brought faster to those people who rishol after us! Even though the website and menu say: "Please allow 20 minutes for item". It's a lie!!! Moreover, the waitress constantly came and said that a little more and your dish would be ready. I don’t understand why they lie so much, because we said after 20 minutes of waiting that we were in a hurry! Our dish was brought only an hour after our order! I want to note that I can not say that it was delicious! Moreover, what they gave us as a result did not correspond to the dish that was in the picture on their website. I would fire such lying waitresses because they don't respect customers and their time! Apparently, therefore, this restaurant adds a 20% tip to the check in advance. And they bring a check already with a calculated tip of 20%, they still dare to bring a pen to be left a tip from the top!

    It was my parents Anniversary it wasn’t celebrated. Waiter asked us about champagne we said yes. They never came out with it. She kept telling my parents everything was an up charge. Everyone was getting upset. We didn’t care about the upcharge. It was one ticket and I was covering everyone. Then she kept telling us about the 20%. I told her at the beginning I knew about it. We went ahead and paid at the end I tipped and then she asked us again about the 20%. We left

    Remarkable seafood restaurant on edge of St James River with wonderful view. We stopped for lunch halfway on our journey from North Carolina to Maryland. We will be back. The fish and chips were spectacular. This was a keeper! And lovely ambiance.
