Some of the best pizza we ever had. Great service. Nice atmosphere.
Awesome atmosphere and top notch service. Given the requirements for social distance, we made reservations for 8:30 and the small staff did an amazing job with the 4 different groups at the restaurant while managing all the to-go orders.
Cute little place with wood fired pizza made right by the bar
Had the meatballs, they were outstanding and the marinara pizza, also outstanding. Service was great.
Dinner with friends.
everything was great. Amazing space with a great menu
This is a very small and intimate spot. They have a wood fire oven for making homemade pizza. It is a perfect place for date night.
Team is super friendly and attentive. I love the small space that makes me feel like I am at a hidden sweet spot in NYC. The Farro Salad is delicious, something I now crave. Pizza is classic Neapolitan pizza with high quality ingredients.
I love this place! Cozy and unique and it never disappoints. The food and service are exceptional.
We were just looking for a place we could walk to from the hotel after checking in. What a find! Their Neopolitan pizza is LEGIT, my wife and I would put it on par with Matt Bianco's in Phoenix. Seriously. And their Garden Board appetizer is worth the trip even if you don't feel like a pizza -- roasted and pickled/marinated vegetables, olives and pepitas.
Good pizza in small local restaurant with good buzz and nice environment. Downside was leaving smelling of fire / ash from the open over.
Great pizza dough!
It was one of the best dining experiences. I loved everything about it including the food and service. We had to wait a little longer for our reservation and the manager bought us a round of drinks and dessert. Great customer service. I will definitely visit again.
We went for my friend’s birthday and our waitress (I wish I could remember her name!) went ABOVE and BEYOND to help us celebrate. I can’t tell you how much it meant!
Fantastic all around! We celebrated a birthday here and backspace when above and beyond to make the experience special
This is a great date night place, and is small and intimate. Would recommend a reservation on busy nights. Food is delicious!
the pizza was wonderful. but no wines under $50? this isn’t Dubai. that’s just greedy. won’t be coming back...
First time and enjoyed the experience. Will definitely be back.
It’s been 2 years since I’ve been to The Backspace. The quality of service has gone way down. We arrived for our 5:15 reservation and were one of two tables in the restaurant. Our server (didn’t grab her name but long black hair) provided terrible service. She cut us off several times when asking questions and one time turned and left the table as my mom was in mid sentence! My mom tried to be overly nice to the server, but we never got a smile out of her. Everyone has their bad days, but wow.
We ordered the Farro salad that contained very, very little salad. It was a bowl full of the farro grain with a couple leafs of arugula. Bland in taste. Stay away.
Our salami pizza, which I’ve had many many times in the past, was wonderful on many levels - good crust and good sauce. But the big pieces of salami have been replaced with Pizza Hut style pepperoni, and the basil was almost non-existent.
I would’ve recommended The Backspace from a few years ago, but not anymore.
Excellent food and wine. One of my favorite go-to spots.
I love trying new restaurants around Austin, especially smaller, independently owned. I was excited to try this small restaurant. When we arrived, they took note of my reservation request and accommodated without trouble. The staff were attentive and super kind. I appreciated everyone i interacted with. The food, however, was not worth it. We ordered the meatballs, Caesar salad, and a pepperoni pizza to share with my colleague. The meatballs were dry and not very flavorful. The sauce was delicious. The salad was mediocre - it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t outstanding. There were incredibly large pieces of veggies that were awkward to eat without chopping through the salad. Dressing was ok but overwhelming a bit. The pizza - i was very disappointed. The crust was crispy but the pizza didn’t feel all of the way done. It was - or i would have sent back. the pepperoni wasn’t exactly as i would have expected - the middle and bottom was barely hot but the edges burnt. The cheese was melted but not completely. The crust was completely done - almost over. The ingredients didn’t taste remarkable or i would have just suggesting a miss in the cooking oven.
The drink recommendations were amazing, though!
Love the meatballs , pizza and wine!
Really great fancy pizza. Went here for a business lunch with a colleague. Ordered the pepperoni pizza and added prosciutto which was a real winner. Also ordered the chicken saltimboca which was good, but chicken was a little (not a lot) dry.
The meatball appetizer was also very tasty.
Friendly staff and amazing environment, food tasted great, will be back soon.
Fantastic experience. Pizza was great. Bartender was friendly. Excellent coffee and dessert.
Love this space. It's always great food, service, and atmosphere.
Always a go-to and a favorite!! Love Backspace for a nice dinner but still pretty casual. Perfect date night, dinner with friends, or for an easy dinner spot after friends/family land and check into their hotel. All around, great option!!
This place is a hidden gem! The pizza was incredible and their service and staff were great!!!
Great pizza and salad. Very small interior. I would think unwed a reservation
I had visited The Backspace previously and had an enjoyable experience. I took my family there on Sunday night. The restaurant had most tables filled. Our waiter took awhile to come to our table. We ordered the vegetarian anti pasta platter for an appetizor, a Caesar Salad, a couple of pizzas, baked ricotta and the meatballs.
The Caesar was too heavily dressed. The meatballs were dry. The pizza came out before the appetizors which was fine. The waiter then brought the meat lovers anti pasta and placed it on our table. We reminded him that we ordered the vegetable one and the meat lovers platter was removed. The vegetarian platter finally arrived as the last dish. By that point, we were ready to leave.
Probably won't return
Great pizza and wine list. Wonderful friendly service.
Basic pizza and salads but well done. Interesting decor. Clientele a bit on younger side but if you are in the mood for pizza and a glass of wine in a comfortable setting go for it.
One of our most favorite places in Austin. The food is amazing and the service is impeccable. Thank you Backspace!!
The food never disappoints at Backspace! The only downside is the size of the venue and seating situation. Seating is so tight that if you are not seated on the edge, and have people dining next to you, it's near impossible to get up and use the restroom... You are wedged in pretty tightly.
This is by far my favorite restaurant in Austin, and it's one of two Neapolitan-style pizza restaurants in the US that we've found that truly matches the quality of the best pizza my husband had when he visited Naples, Italy. And the ambiance and quality of food make it the perfect place to celebrate special occasions without having to spend an outrageous amount of money, and the service is always excellent. The only thing that could make it better would be if it was located in North Austin so that we could make it there more often. :)
The pizza was outstanding, true Neapolitan style w thin crispy crust and fresh ingredients. The meatball appetizer and the salad were also great. The place was hopping but the staff was on top of it, with just the right amount of attention vs leaving us alone. Melinda was especially good.
Will definitely tell friends about this place.
The white pizza (Blanca) was perfectly balanced. Crust was perfect thickness and texture. The citrus touch on the arugula was just right. Quaint place, delicious food, nice service!
This place came recommended to us. I reserved our table on Open Table. Upon walking in you notice the amazing smoky aroma of the wood burning pizza oven. The decor is rustic and chic. The lighting is a bit too dim for my preference. The menu was limited but what we ordered was very good. All of this would’ve been the stuff of a pretty good review except the service was such a disappointment. We got a tall skinny male server who, in this tiny restaurant, couldn’t show us to our table but merely pointed! I had questions about the menu but he disappeared and was hard to find so when he finally showed back up, we ordered. Had he suggested appetizers we would’ve ordered them but he didn’t. My artichoke pizza was fabulous and my daughter loved the mozzarella tomato pizza. This is the part that I couldn’t believe: at the end of the meal our waiter brings the check and after a few minutes he starts back to come pick it up. I’m holding it out to hand it to him but the guy at the next table decides he wants to pay now, too. So the waiter stops midway to me, CHANGES DIRECTION, and picks up the ticket for the other customer! I couldn’t believe it. The only thing I could figure is the waiter felt more compelled to serve the single male sitting by himself versus the mom and daughter even though we had been there longer. Unbelievable. Additionally, I paid with a $100 bill and you’d think I paid in foreign currency, it took an excessively long time to receive my change back. I was seriously about to go up to him at the counter to help him out but he FINALLY returned with my change and it was close to correct!
Undercooked pizza - the dough was raw under the toppings. If you want to cook pizza very quickly, it can't be thick. After waiting 40 minutes for the pizza, I chose not to have them re-make it. Good ingredients, cool place, servers were nice enough if not stretched too thin. I wish they had stretched the dough that thin, the pizza would have been cooked.
We love The Backspace! The squash with green goddess dressing and the Bianca pizza are so delicious. They also have 1/2 wine/beer and antipasti during happy hour...a great deal!
