Tempest has been named the country’s #1 new restaurant by readers of USA Today’s travel guide, 10Best. Located on Market Street, in the former historic Harriott Pinckney Home for Sailors, next door to sister location Church and Union Charleston. Tempest features hyper-local, sustainable Coastal Modern-American food, with a seasonal menu curated by Chef Adam Hodgson and Bravo Top Chef Alum Chef Jamie Lynch.

This is a very small restaurant. There is a downstairs with the bar that has some style to it but the seating is very limited and there are few tables to occupy downstairs. We were taken to the upstairs which was plain and boring. The upstairs is more suited for large groups and parties which was made more obvious when parties of 8 and more started to fill up the area. Our server was Maya who was very nice and explained everything well. The menu is small and limited unless you love fish. However, once we ordered we felt the meal came out too fast We sat down at 5:15 and were out before 6:00!!! I ordered shrimp cocktail and filet mignon. The shrimp cocktail was very generous in the quantity. However, it was covered in a heavy paprika that overwhelmed the appetizer. My filet mignon was nothing to shout about. It was cooked perfectly but not flavorful. It was served with mashed potatoes and, even though the mashed potatoes were tasty, the portion was so small it made me wonder if they were on a tight budget. Ron had the fried calamari with a Lemon aioli. He said it was very good the portion for one was perfect. For his main course, he had the steak frites served with shoestring French fries and an au poivre sauce. He liked the fries and thought the steak was good but nothing to shout about. The prices were reasonable, but where they gouge you are the prices on the drinks. Each side car I ordered cost over $22. I had two without knowing the price and Ron had two glasses of wine. Our drink tab came to over $76!!! Our meal was only about $180, however, once you factor in the drinks and tip we were well over $300 for the two of us. We walked out feeling that we didn't have a nice night out at all. I don't mind paying a hefty amount if I have a good time. In this case, I was very disappointed and felt cheated on a nice night out. So would we go back? No! I have experienced Tempest once and that was enough.

This place was fabulous! Grace recommendations did not disappoint! She was fabulous, courteous, knowledgeable and personable. The food was amazing. The roasted oysters…. Would have eaten 100! The flounder was delicious. The Harriet drink - I’ve never drank a beverage so quickly. It was top notch. Highly recommend and I can’t wait to bring a crew!

This was great! I think I should have got a table inside vs the street (flys when food came that kinda killed the vibe). Great spot!

My husband and I were on a weekend trip to Charleston for our anniversary and decided to make a last-minute reservation at Tempest. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the very friendly host who seated us and make sure to tell us “Happy Anniversary.” The wait staff all went above and beyond to make our evening special. Tempest had the perfect ambiance for a relaxing anniversary dinner with a unique flair. The decor was beautiful, the food was amazing, and it was overall a 10/10 experience.

Had the best pre-birthday dinner, was so good we went back the next night! Our waitress Grace and the restaurant manager were AMAZING!!! The kindest staff, great service, cool atmosphere, and the best short ribs we've ever had! Also had wedge salad, a special tomato salad, the flounder, fried calamari, bread service, and ice cream - all amazing!

I was excited to dine at Tempest, the food and service was great, however, the ambiance not so much as we were seated upstairs even though downstairs was not packed at all. I would have preferred the downstairs seating as the ambiance was nicer.

Very friendly and helpful staff. I have a severe allergy and they were super reassuring and accommodating. It was pretty quiet when we walked in so we were a bit nervous but by the time we finished dinner and were leaving, the place was packed!
