This was my first time at TaiPan. Very nice dim sum restaurant. Ambiance and setting is more upscale than your typical dim sum place. Ordering was easy and they even provide a visual cheat-sheet if needed. I'd have to say the food was decent, but not outstanding. I felt the skins for the xiao long bao was too thick. The xiao mai was very good. I'd like to go back with a larger group (only 2 of us for dim sum) to get a larger sampling off their menu. I'd have to say the price was a bit steep for dim sum - not super expensive, but slightly above average for cost.
Most (only) authentic Chinese food in Palo Alto. Excellent!
Great as usual, what you are looking for a restaurant is their consistency in food preparation and tasting...always consistently good. Great and fast service for Dimsum
Good and timely service
Always excellent food, well prepared and available quickly. Chicken lettuce cups nicely presented and very tasty. Taipan provides a very high end atmosphere'
This restaurant has been in Palo Alto for a long time, but for some reason we never found our way there. This weekend, I took my kids and we had an amazing meal. As a former chef in NYC, I make compliments sparingly. But I have to say that Tai Pan serves excellent Chinese food. Our choices weren't particularly exotic, given that I was dining with two 6-year-olds (pot stickers, Shanghai dumplings (xiao long bao), fried rice and green beans with pork). But every dish was delicious. I was particularly impressed by the shrimp in the fried rice--which was cooked to perfection. As far as the atmosphere, the decor is very tasteful, and the service attentive. We'll definitely add this to our list of local favorites.
Excellent food and services ! Highly recommended !!
Waiter forgot part of order, only brought at the end after we asked what happened. Not the usual level of service, even when very busy. Calamari very tough ( usually very good!). We were disappointed, but, still good food!
Tai Pan is a no nonsense Hong Kong Style restaurant. The service is so gracious, and the food is very well prepared. The only thing I can’t recommend are the cocktails. If you want an alcoholic drink stick to beer or wine.
It was fine
I was expecting a littl better quality food and it was just fine. No socks off , no BOOM just some food. Nothing wrong with it but won’t be back
Moo Shu Pork w. Crepes
Drinks: Tea (pdf course) and Riesling.
It was delightful.
Consistently great atmosphere... Food always good quality . Good DimSun for Sunday brunch...
A great find for good price value for Palo Alto standard
Our I:00 reservation was made with OpenTable. We arrived at 12:55, and were seated at 1:45. We thought that Open Table should know that when we reminded a host/waiter that we had a 1:00 reservation, he said, “There’s no such thing as reservations at a tea house! So be patient !
We arrived at Taipan 12 minutes before the reservation time. But we still had to wait 20 minutes passed our reservation time to be seated. The restaurant needs to improve its way of handling reservation properly.
These guys are great. We come for business frequently, and we've also had our company parites here. The food is phenomenal, the service is wonderful and it comfortable and has beautiful decor.
This was my 2nd visit to Taipan and I loved it again! Everything was terrific! Food, service, and ambiance. We celebrated my husband’s birthday and he really enjoyed himself! A great spot anytime!!!
Lovely dinner in casual elegance surroundings! Each dish was prepared with care and quality. Everyone really enjoyed the meal and was fully relaxed.
Food was flavorful and delicious. Service was very good. A wonderful dinner.
I ate at Tai Pan for the first time on Chinese New Year’s day. It was a dinner reservation. I was on time and seated on time. I was welcomed 4 times while I walked through to my table. The restaurant is decorated in a tasteful and well lit manner with white wood trim, yellow walls, and elegant Chinese paintings and objects around the room.
The table was neatly arranged with a table cloth and place setting with elegant black chopsticks with silver bands at the top and a plate with knife and fork.
The menu presented a good selection of Cantonese favorites. I ordered the chicken in lettuce cups, walnut prawns, scallops and eggplant, and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce.
The only slip up was that the server heard beef and snow peas instead of Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. The restaurant was quite loud, but again it was Chinese New Year’s day and there were many families.
When the beef dish came we let them know that it was wrong, but that we would take the dish anyway because it looked delicious. We were right to accept the dish. The beef was perfectly prepared, marinated and tender. The snow peas were lightly cooked and crisp. The other dishes were good as well.
My only observations were: (a) the chicken and lettuce cups were small with only a table spoon full of filling each; (b) the prawns were a bit small (a little smaller than a half dollar coin; and (c) the prices per dish were $$, which is what I expected from a high-end Chinese restaurant. However, I also expect larger than half dollar sized prawns for $$.
Overall the food was very tasty, well prepared, and the ambience was good. I would return to Tai Pan for a special occasion, and I enjoyed the evening.
Excellent service. The restaurant personnel went over and beyond their duties to make our visit really special
The food is not authentic Chinese, but Americanized. The service is slow. The price is much higher than the quality of the food.
Family weekend meal
Great place for chinese food
This review isn’t about the food which was decent but about the service. Having thr
Although this restaurant has very good food and is pleasant enough they have been very unhelpful with a problem I have had with them and Open Table. I told them when I checked in that I had a reservation. Ostensibly I was told OK and they would confirm it. I then received a message from Open Table the next day telling me I forfeited my points even though I had been there. I have a copy of my confirmation and then a form from Open table to rate the restaurant. Upon calling the restaurant and asking them to make a correction they said I didn't have a reservation. Not only did we have drinks waiting for our table but we spend more than $90.00 on food. I resent that they have been so uncooperative and unwilling to make a small correction.
The steamed cod was a disappointment and very expensive. Every other dish was excellent.
Elegant. Delicious. Creative. The best Hong Kong cuisine in the SF Bay Area...
Excellent Chinese food! We enjoyed everything. The vegetables were fresh, tasty, and slightly crisp. The seafood was perfectly prepared. The sesame balls were fresh out of the oven and a perfect way to end a great meal.
Very professional service and thoughtfulness. They were gracious in changing our table at our request despite the fact that they were really packed. Excellent food
Been going here for Christmas Eve
This was a Christmas Eve celebration. Our family was treated to a great dinner and friendly service. There was not an empty table in the restaurant which raised the sound level, but did not overly delay the service.
Dim sum at Tai Pan is unmatched, however, the tables were a little crowded.
The food is good and is not expensive. Good ambiance but, like most restaurants, noisy. The single most annoying feature of the place is the painful slowness of the delivery of the food and the wholly indifferent attitude of the maitre-d and the staff. I imagined that the boss must be a terrible tyrant who has, over time, depressed the servers so greatly that, as a reaction, they have decided to take it out on the patrons. No smiles, no sense of welcoming the diners, nothing but a deep indifference to one and all. But, as I say, the food is good. If you don't mind waiting 30-45 minutes for the food and you don't need smiles and a pleasant welcome, by all means. GO!
Great for brunch, the food is always and consistently great. Had great dimsum Shanghai dumplings are delicious ans I reported twice and they were as good as the first time. Strongly recommended I must say
Great dim sum but it doesn’t seem to matter if you have a reservation or not. The last two times we had to wait 30 min for our table along with everyone else waiting without a reservation.... and they don’t apologize.
We'd been here a few years back and recalled in was a positive experience.....and they even exceeded our high expectation this time around. The first thing that strikes you about Tai Pan is the beautiful decor.....definitely many levels above most Chinese restaurants. The menu is huge and varied, our server was knowledgable and helpful, and the entrees were delicious. We loved the clear-glass lazy Susan, and everyone in our party got a taste of everything. A thumbs up!!!
Food, wine, and service were all outstanding. We all (5 of us) liked every single dish.
Nice place, a bit pricey, but overall good. Food came quickly, our service was very good, and the dishes are creative.
Dim sum was a little pricey, but very fresh. Servers changed plates and replenished tea as needed, and promptly. Great variety for dim sum. I would recommend.
