My favorite part of dinner was the spicy strawberry margarita. Other than that it was just “okay”.
Food was amazing!!! We got the pork belly entree (husband absolutely raved about it), 3 piece mixed fried chicken, and sides of braised collards, candied yams, and a buttermilk biscuit. Everything was seasoned just right, and so good. Would definitely come back if we visit San Diego again.
Visiting San Diego, experience was great at this restaurant... kid friendly
Everything is AMAZING! Don’t play yourself, be Suckerfree! 😃💕
It took a few minutes for our waitress to take our order but after that she was attentive and food tasted great.
Arrived at 7 PM on Valentines Day and was told they were running out of food. Had to find some place else to eat.
Our server/bartender Michael was great. He was very helpful with the menu and drink choices. Highly recommend this restaurant.
I wrote a review yesterday. Check it out
Loved this place! Staff & food were wonderful. A bit pricey but that should be expected since it’s downtown. Lunch for 2, we spent $60+ for a shared appetizer, shared entree, 2 teas & 2 desserts. That being said it was still great food, ambiance & staff. I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for truly southern dishes!
The food was just ok. Nothing out of this world of something I'd look to eating again. It was way to loud in there for the amount of people that weren't in there. Our server was cool
The food and service was great!
1st Time Visiting Suckerfee, it appears waitress was having a off night. She forgot our Cornbread when serving our order, we asked for ice for my wife glass of wine when waitress serve us, she left to go get it and then forgot about our request. I asked waitress for glass of water for myself while she was passing. I had my apple cider beer in my hand she brought back another apple cider beer. She apologized and took it back and brought my water. When we went to pay our bill we noticed she charged us for the beer she took away. We flagged her down and she fixed the problem....... Although it was not over crowded or busy for bill over 100.00 for party of 2, i was expecting better service. We still gave waitress a small tip but it was at the value of service we were given. We will comeback and patronized the venue and support Suckerfree minority own business and again with the assessment that waitress was having a bad night or short staff
I wonder what all the good reviews are? I don't know if it was an off night but our food wasn't good. Service was ok but they never refilled our water which bugs me.
They all raved about the ribs, so I got them. Boy do I regret it! Main problem was they were burnt and tough. When the bone is charred and crumbles, you know it's not going to be tender. I couldn't chew through most of my bites so about halfway I gave up. My wife got the brisket sandwich and it was also very dry. She took 2 bites and pushed it away. I always send back food that isn't good but she wasn't in the mood so we didn't.
The food we liked was the fried green tomatoes. Way overpriced for five tomatoes with little shrimp crumbles on them and some sauce underneath but they were good. Then we got the black pepper mac and cheese witch hat at great flavor and was a big portion for the price. Then finally for dessert we got the peach cobbler which I really enjoyed because it reminded me of the South where I grew up eating peach pandowdy.
Overall I doubt I'll ever come back to this place. For the $75 I paid with tax + tip only drinking water is crazy.
Great place to get your fix of southern comfort food. Great friendly staff too!!! Nice room.
Our server who was also working as the bartender was phenomenal! However, I went to the ladies room and advised them that it really needed attention and not one of the women the server asked to take care of it went in there. We were seated right by it and could see if a worker was going in. Also, one of the other servers, a lady with twists walked by and I asked for a plate, as I didn’t have anything to eat off of. She Brough me a saucer. What since does that make to bring me a saucer when my husband had a plate for his meal and mine can all on saucers. I love Suckerfree and brought a family of 13 there a little over a month ago. I can honestly say this visit was less than stellar. The food wasn’t as good either. Sad thing is we drive here from Orange County.
The service was phenomenal, vibe and ambiance really good! They should update website about parking and brunch times though. Menu is nice and food tasty!
Great place to have some awesome dishes. I was truly amazed by the service. Everything was delicious. Can’t wait to visit when I come back to San Diego.
Food was DELICIOUS. The fried chicken was out of this work and the biscuits were perfect in texture and taste. The bartender also offered up some unbelievably refreshing cocktails. The breakfast menu was a a delight I would recommend trying it out.
I had a 1:00pm reservation for 4 people. The staff was scrambling around like they were under staffed. It was 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. Waited in line for 30 minutes even with a reservation and I was on time. Food was over priced and the Shrimp po'boy was messy and not good had to order fries on the side. Never again will I dine here or recommend this place !
Great place! Good southern food. Definitely love the Saints games. With they gave military discount however I still love the place and will be back soon!
Parking is challenging, but worth it! Their fried chicken was crispy , flavorful, and moist. The flight of Mac n cheese was tasty. The cheese grits etouffee was a little runny. Our server was not very knowledgeable about the menu, but after another veteran server came over , all was well.
Great food and chill as hell environment!!!
This was not my first time at Suckerfree but some friends wanted to try so I went with it. However, as always this place is not worth it at all. Anything that is fried tastes like cornmeal with no seasoning or anything. And the cornmeal batter is so thick you can hardly tell what you are biting into. And this particular night the service was horrible. We waited for about 15 mins before asking the host to take our drink order. Once the waiter did come over he explained that they were in the middle of a shift break but still unacceptable. Once the full staff did show up the food still took forever to come out (approx 20 min). I am sorry but I have given this place 3 chances and it has always been bad. I’m sorry but that was my last time trying.
We recently had dinner at Suckerfree; our first and last time. The decor is plain and stark with all black and white photos; needs some colors! The music is entirely too loud. Our server, Basil was great; very friendly, kind and accommodating and all the other employees we encountered were friendly. The bartenders moved around very slowly and took too long to put out drinks. We also observed a female employee on her cell phone and eating at the bar the entire time we were there.
But the food...... my husband had the fried chicken, yams and cornbread. The chicken had a very thick, crunchy batter but the meat was not very juicy. The yams were not very flavorful and the cornbread was just ok. I had the brisket melt. It was way too big to eat as a sandwich so I discarded the top piece of Texas toast and ate the components separately. I asked for some ranch dressing and ate the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, which was great. The spicy pickles, melted cheese and brisket were tasty but the brisket had a lot of fat which I tried to pick out. The bottom layer of hash browns were crispy and a bit greasy. The whole thing needed some kind of sauce.
We got the peach cobbler for dessert, which was really peach bread pudding with canned peaches, but it was the best thing we had and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
What, no salads on the menu?? They don't eat salad in the south?
I’m a veteran from Georgia and I was amazed at how authentic this food tasted. I will definitely return for more.
Pretty disappointed by the actual food. The menu all sounds amazing. But once it comes out it lacks of flavor and is very dry. We had a big group that got things ranging from fried chicken to the smothered oxtails (they weren’t smothered) and the Mac n cheese flight (sour and not so good). Service was extremely slow....had to order multiple drinks at once for them to even come out at a decent pace. Overall a major let down if you’re looking for southern food.
Great food, ambience, and customer service. Modern chic soulful decor. Thanks for making my Fifty bday celebration fun. Sadie the server was wonderful !!!
The atmosphere and ambience are good. Eating outside is weird, especially with the transients. Service was a little lack luster. The food... SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. AMAZING!!!!
It was a very slow evening in the restaurant, so the servers were very attentive. The music was great, and the place is clean. The food wasn't quite up to par for me. The macaroni & cheese was bland, the greens were not very flavorful, and the cornbread was dry. I won't go to this restaurant again.
My food order was placed wrong by the server. And although she placed the correct order immediately, I still did not get my food until after everyone at my large table was finished with their meal . My order was complimentary, and overall the po’ boy was good . The fries were obviously from my first order because they were lukewarm at best. For the most part everyone like the food. But the service was terrible as there was not more than 5 tables occupied while we were there.
Although the server was nice and friendly, she was not very attentive. It also would have been nice for a manager to come to the table to apologized for my food coming out an hour after I ordered. She also walked out of the establishment, after we gave her out payment, and walked back with a friend from outside before returning with our bills, credit cards, and change.
Would probably have been a better experience if they had a manager managing staff on site.
This was our first time going and with my girlfriend being very familiar with preparing most of these dishes I felt we’d not cook and try it. Straight up the food was on point especially the Okra and the greens. The Mac and Cheese was very delicious. With our first selections of the gizzards and the crab cakes we were informed “let me check to see if we have any left.. both items? Then our server said they were being removed from the menu.
To be honest the next review is of our server - both my girl and I are in the food service industry and we were both like “he had to check to see if these items were a go no-go? We also realize that when you are seated and the server comes to greet they bring salt/pepper/hot sauce.. we got squat! Had to ask ... our server found his time better spent outside on the sidewalk with the hostess!.. our bus person was on point with tea refills and long after we were done my girl finally had to ask another server for to-go containers and the check... which she did.. she received the $15 dollar tip and our server got $5
My girl is convinced that it’s because she is black and I am white and it was a slight to her!.. I sincerely hope not.. she said we will go back and see for sure
The food was really good. The portions are huge and you can share sides with someone. The fried chicken was some of the best I’ve had and the mac and cheese was delicious.
Reservations was made but restaurant was not open.
Loved this place!!! Great food!!
This place is great. Delicious food, good tap list and friendly service.
Great atmosphere. My family will definitely be back again.
Always enjoy Suckerfree. However, please turn the music volume down!
SuckerFree will be a go to spot for me, my family and I would recommend it to friends visiting GasLamp every time. I appreciate the food, namely the fried chicken. Other sides including butter beans, macaroni, and baked yams are also legit. Best part is drinks: Hurricane, Blacker the Berry and Henny-Colada (which will soon be Remy Colada) are my personal favorites. Good menu with many options I still want to try. I probably under play what is the best part of SuckerFree, the music and ambiance. 90s hip hop with plenty of similar hip hop culture decoration throughout the restaurant. Always a energetic but easy going vibe and service. Good for bar seating and they are also able to handle large groups.
Foods always great and service was amazing. I enjoyed it very much and will return soon.
