The term “soul food” didn’t become common until the 1960s. With the rise of the civil rights and black nationalist movements during the 1960s, many Black Americans sought to reclaim their part of the American cultural legacy. As terms like soul brother, soul sister and soul music were taking hold, it was only natural that the term soul food would be used to describe the recipes that Black Americans had been cooking for generations. Soul food is basic, down-home cooking with its roots in the rural South. Where the conversations are long, food is cooked slow and the drinks are cold and sweet. To many, all that just sounds like a description of Southern food. The distinctions between Soul & Southern are hard to make. While all Soul food is Southern food, not all Southern food has Soul. Soul food & Southern food cooking are examples of how great Southern cooks cooked with what they had available to them. Suckerfree will always pay homage to both traditions and remain loyal to the soil. SF

Food was delicious! Well prepared and very flavorful. It’s difficult to fine good soul food in San Diego but not anymore now that Suckerfree is here. We will most definitely be back!

Awful experience. Suckerfree refused to honor our confirmed Open Table reservations that we made weeks in advance. The music was deafeningly loud and the hostess seemed confused and kept having to go to the back to ask the manager before answering our questions. She ultimately stated that they were closing early because of a “mishap” in the kitchen she was unable to define. Two families showed up after us. One large group was seated, the other was not. They claimed to have called ahead for reservations. The restaurant had approximately 9 open tables. Overall huge disappointment, especially after driving around an hour looking for parking.

When we arrived, there was not one staff person at front of house for at least five minutes. Someone eventually came out from the back, he seemed as if we were a bother. Not very warm or welcoming.The restaurant was pretty empty, with one couple and a group of four leaving upon our arrival. There were NO paper products whatsoever in the ladies room! Also, the restaurant was freezing! We inquired about closing the front door and were told "the owner wants it open". The food was ok, nothing great except for the portions, which were good for the price. We wouldn't go back, and now we know why there wasn't anyone else there.

My husband and I were visiting San Diego for the week and we have to say this was the BEST food we had all week. Seems like a hidden gem downtown. The drinks were delicious and it was great to get a discounted appetizer. Our meals were so well seasoned and full of flavor. 10/10 recommend eating here!!

Our food was spoiled. We informed the server of the taste and smell and we were granted $9.50 off the check. This place could be great, but they need fresh food and it’s no excuse due to COVID because this place was empty.

The food was hit and miss. I liked my shrimp and grits; although the Étouffée could of had more kick. The fried pork chop my son had was pretty good but the duck my wife had I believe was a tad under and difficult to eat. The duck meal was advertised to come with vegetables but was served with collard greens that lacked flavor and seasoning. Cocktails were overall excellent as I had two old fashioned type specialty drinks. I also ended up drinking my wife’s specialty martini I rather enjoyed.

The restaurant was clean and had a warehouse open feel with seating generally spaced apart and a long bar; covered, paid parking located across the street that was convenient. Outside seating was also available.

Food was good though we never received one of our sides and the guy who seemed to be in charge did not seem to be aware of what the kitchen actually has in it. The server did her best but was clearly understaffed and drinks took over 30 minutes at one point. Won't go back unless it's to grab some to go food.

The food was great and we really enjoyed it. However the service was not very good- our drinks sat on the bar waiting to be brought to our table for about 10 minutes. It's also very loud, which is not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind.

It was absolutely awful! I was SO embarrassed that I brought my sisters who were visiting from out of town! First of all we made reservations & were seated 42 minutes after we arrived. The manager said they had a large party (which we could see) of about 20 or so people. There were 4 servers including the manager. There were only 3 other small tables with people. Otherwise the restaurant was completely empty but several people waiting. There were 3 tables where they seated people AHEAD of us! The manager said he would serve us personally but he was busy tending the bar among other things. They didn’t get our very clear order correct, had to keep asking for things that were supposed to accompany our meal and we literally asked for butter 12 times for my sisters’ grits and by the time we final got it & used it, the grits were cold! Then it took another 6 requests to get butter again for the new grits! Almost the same thing happened with the barbecue caduceus that should have been on the brisket sandwich & the syrup for the waffles which were also forgotten had had to be requested again. It was like we were on Candid Camera but it was NOT funny! I did a minimal tip but i was mortified by their service! And lastly when my sister tried to apologize to the younger waiter who stepped in for us being so demanding but it was stuff that should have been with our meal he said “…I get paid no matter what.”! 😳

First let me say that Gio, our server, was EVERYTHING! He suggested the popcorn catfish and it was actually the best thing we had. The drinks were ok, we ordered mostly the tequila Kool-Aid with extra shots. The reason I can I give this place 5 stars, we ordered our food and it took forever, yet the place was empty, and on top of that the food was cold and the rice in both dishes we ordered was mushy. The oxtail dish were a measly 2 oxtails, not hardly worth the price but had GREAT flavor, aside from the mushy rice lol. The wings are smoked and fried, but make sure to ask for extra crispy, they were a little on the soft side for a fried wing. We had the the Hennessy Habanero and they were even bette the next day! I was here hanging out with my sisters and brother and overall we had a good time. The location is perfect for outdoor dining on a Friday evening. I will be back to give it another try soon. I have been twice in the past and had a much better food experience.

The food was okay but not for what they charge. I had wings and waffles and my wife had the brisket sandwich. Their website says they offer gluten-free fried chicken but they don’t right now due to COVID. Overall this place was disappointing. The one plus was that our server Destiny was very nice. This place is a hard pass, save your money.

We were visiting San Diego and looking for a last minute dinner place to celebrate our friend’s birthday after our original plans fell through. The name of this restaurant and the menu called out to everyone in our group immediately, so we made a reservation. We showed up and found a really hip cool place with and outdoor terrace in the front. Although they appeared short staffed, we could see they were hustling and working so hard to service their customers. We were in no rush so not a problem for us, but they ended giving us excellent service and they treated us like family. All the food and drinks we ordered were amazing. Some of the items we ordered were the fried pickles, frog legs, Mac n Cheese, fried okra, shrimp and grits, country fried chicken, ribs, and pretty much every specialty cocktail. All did not disappoint! We had such a great time and experience at Suckerfree. They even brought out dessert with a candle on it and sang happy birthday to our friend! So much fun was had! Highly recommended and we will definitely try to go back next time we visit San Diego!

Food was amazing!!! We got the pork belly entree (husband absolutely raved about it), 3 piece mixed fried chicken, and sides of braised collards, candied yams, and a buttermilk biscuit. Everything was seasoned just right, and so good. Would definitely come back if we visit San Diego again.

Loved this place! Staff & food were wonderful. A bit pricey but that should be expected since it’s downtown. Lunch for 2, we spent $60+ for a shared appetizer, shared entree, 2 teas & 2 desserts. That being said it was still great food, ambiance & staff. I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking for truly southern dishes!

1st Time Visiting Suckerfee, it appears waitress was having a off night. She forgot our Cornbread when serving our order, we asked for ice for my wife glass of wine when waitress serve us, she left to go get it and then forgot about our request. I asked waitress for glass of water for myself while she was passing. I had my apple cider beer in my hand she brought back another apple cider beer. She apologized and took it back and brought my water. When we went to pay our bill we noticed she charged us for the beer she took away. We flagged her down and she fixed the problem....... Although it was not over crowded or busy for bill over 100.00 for party of 2, i was expecting better service. We still gave waitress a small tip but it was at the value of service we were given. We will comeback and patronized the venue and support Suckerfree minority own business and again with the assessment that waitress was having a bad night or short staff

I wonder what all the good reviews are? I don't know if it was an off night but our food wasn't good. Service was ok but they never refilled our water which bugs me.

They all raved about the ribs, so I got them. Boy do I regret it! Main problem was they were burnt and tough. When the bone is charred and crumbles, you know it's not going to be tender. I couldn't chew through most of my bites so about halfway I gave up. My wife got the brisket sandwich and it was also very dry. She took 2 bites and pushed it away. I always send back food that isn't good but she wasn't in the mood so we didn't.

The food we liked was the fried green tomatoes. Way overpriced for five tomatoes with little shrimp crumbles on them and some sauce underneath but they were good. Then we got the black pepper mac and cheese witch hat at great flavor and was a big portion for the price. Then finally for dessert we got the peach cobbler which I really enjoyed because it reminded me of the South where I grew up eating peach pandowdy.

Overall I doubt I'll ever come back to this place. For the $75 I paid with tax + tip only drinking water is crazy.
