State of Grace is a coastal, South Texas neighborhood restaurant in the refurbished Lamar-River Oaks Shopping Center. Elegant but casual, its elevated comfort food by executive chef Bobby Matos is executed at the highest level in a welcoming, beautiful space. The jubilant medley of old favorites played with new spice, accent, and freshness lends itself to southern, American, Latin, Gulf Coast, German and Asian influences. Chef-owner Ford Fry’s first venture outside of Atlanta, State of Grace is located in the neighborhood where Ford grew up and nods to his childhood memories fused with Houston’s evolution into a melting pot of cultures and cuisines.

    Some thorns and roses. Server was superb! Vaughn was incredibly knowledgeable on all things with the menu and we asked a lot of questions! Started with the Speedster cocktail, which I have had many times. This time, it was way heavy on Aperol. A great drink gone wrong. Everything here is usually delicious...even if you aren't sure it would be. We enjoyed our adventure through the menu, but we generally came away feeling the descriptions were better than delivery. I felt the redfish was flavorless other than being a great, fresh, perfectly cooked piece of fish. Didn't get much of the ginger, chili, lime etc in the sparse and watery sauce/broth. Same with the cold crab claws, accompanied by some watery flavorless broth. The butter lettuce salad and especially, grilled peaches were both hits, as was the pansotti pasta. Wonderful. If I had it to do again, stick to the sides/pasta and share. There is a whole meal there. We were very thankful it was a quiet night as it can be very loud. We enjoyed the evening...it just wasn't my favorite visit...other than the service.

    I don't normally give glowing reviews, but State of Grace deserves one...from valet attendant, to front desk hostess, bar staff and wait staff. The best I have experienced in more than a year, anywhere. Not kidding, and I eat at nice restaurants a lot. My particular appreciation goes to our primary server, Nate, and the restaurant's manager, Wednesday (yes that's her name, and you won't forget it). They and their staff have a REAL appreciation for the ancient phrase "customer service." They are all attentive, solicitous, knowledgeable about all the food, able to communicate with actual words, and fun, too! To think, I used to take all that for granted... Decor was luxurious in a cool, comfortable way, and every food item we had was delicious. Particular favorites were the crab hushpuppies, shrimp cocktail (huge), redfish on the half shell, and blueberry pudding cake. The latter could be my last meal and I'd die happy. Anyway, try it and you'll see I am not over selling. I will return, so don't take up all the tables!!

    The farm to table food was amazing. We sat in a quiet room, which was quite nice as the main restaurant is more open. Top-of-the-line experience.

    Food was creative and excellent. Waiter was helpful. Noise level was a little loud for our taste, but tolerable (we skew older). We did not feel rushed, which we appreciated.

    Service was terrible. Everything took a long time to come out while everyone around us was getting their food (tables ordering after us as well). The manager did come out with the app & remove from the bill and later brought champagne which was very appreciated.

    Thank you State of Grace for making my bachelorette dinner amazing. It was one of the highlights of my weekend. The food, service and atmosphere was amazing…and don’t skimp out on desserts. We had the pecan ball and the peach cobbler…both great choices! But you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. If I’m ever back in Houston, I will definitely be back!!

    The food and service were outstanding. The noise lever was high as hard to understand what my husband was saying, but I feel it was just do to the large group next to us that was enjoying their evening and drinks. It’s 💯 percent a place we I’ll go again! The food was beyond excellent and I liked that every one worked together. We didn’t just see our service to check on us but others as well!

    I was frankly disappointed in the food. The scallop crudo was very good, as was the octopus. I always love the hush puppies. The three of us ordered salads—not sure how much my friend liked the butter lettuce wedge, but my husband’s was a huge and uninteresting pile of greens, barely dressed, and the peaches in my peach salad were mushy and oddly coated. The truffle lasagnette—of course expensive for a pasta—was just not good. I would never call what was on the dish lasagnette—it was more of a lasagne in a not very appropriate oven dish. The “cacio e pepe” was not a subtle topping but a cheesy, sticky mess. The whole thing was bland and rich, with the truffles badly cut and placed awkwardly on top. I don’t usually care too much about presentation, but this was frankly unappetizing. Our very nice server was quite directive—perhaps we should ahve ordered exactly what she recommended (the scallops were her recommendation, as well as the butter lettuce). I really did not want the pasta with corn and jalepeno. I think one should be able to choose anything from a menu and have a good experience. Since this was a celebration and meant as a treat for our friend, we were happy to spend money. even so, the prices were extremely high, especially given the unevenness—and in some cases the real problems with—the food.

    Superb cuisine. Excellent service and beautiful dining room. The wine list is wonderful, too. Highly recommend for an innovative dining experience with a modern Texas twist.  don’t miss the hush puppies and the red snapper. Also, the oysters are incredible.

    We always have such a pleasurable experience here. Mario has served us twice and is extremely knowledgeable and personable. Both times, he made sure we had a flawless dining experience. Colby has also served us and was such a great server. Also extremely knowledgeable and knows how to pair you with the perfect cocktail. Both posses a great amount of professionalism and exceeded our expectations. It’s rare to come across such great hospitality these days but State of Grace really has it together! For the food, if you’re going for brunch, you MUST try the Shashuka! It’s definitely shareable and can easily feed two people. Beignets and cinnamon rolls are perfection for those who have a sweet tooth! Dinner, everything we had was amazing. Cacio e Pepe was mouthwatering, Redfish was delectable but I have dreams about their Pecan Ball dessert. OMGGGG it should be outlawed for being so delicious!! Hands down one of our fave spots to dine. Every experience is a delight. Don’t forget to ask for their complimentary ginger snap cream pies when walking out the door!
