                                  Food is exceptional. Service is tremendous. Ambiance is wonderful. Seriously, the menu is creative and very nicely presented. There is an almost unlimited drinks menu. We will definitely be back.

                                  St. Elsewhere offers a small seasonal menu focused on innovative vegan options. Despite four of the five people at our table not being vegan/vegetarian, everyone quickly found a dish that they wanted to try. The spinach dip was hot and creamy, similar to its full dairy cousin. The flavours of the lentil burgers were well balanced and the fries, fresh. The gnocchi received a thumbs-up by the pasta fan. The lion mane dish was the first one finished. The portions were generous enough that no one wanted dessert afterwards. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food arrived hot. Empty dishes were removed promptly. The bottle of water always seemed full without my noticing when the empty one was replaced. The one complaint we had was the noise level. We had to speak quite loudly for the everyone to hear the conversation. Admittedly, we were tired after a long day. We all said we would likely return, with or without our family vegetarian.

                                  I’m knocking the rating up a bit for this being one of the only purely vegan restaurants you can go to in Ottawa that’s still modestly upscale, which means you can use it for nice occasions. I very much want it to stay open. We ordered a variety of appetizers to share: the beet tartar, the burrata, the “roots” (which turned out to be grilled parsnips and shaved beets), some of the “crabby cakes,” the blooming onion in beer sauce, and a dish I can’t recall the name of but was essentially chunks of tomato in a bit of pesto and balsamic vinegar. I’ll mention as well that the menu didn’t match ones I’d seen online, so I think they switch it up regularly. Personally, I liked all the food well enough to eat a bit of it while sharing, but I don’t think I would have enjoyed all of it if given it to eat entirely on my own. My favourites were the blooming onion and the burrata, with the beet tartar with wonton chips being the runner-up. I thought the tomatoes needed way more dressing/vinegar to taste like something other than tomato, and the crabby cakes were unfortunately a bit gloopy, even though the coconut jerk sauce was actually quite nice. I enjoyed some of the roots dish, but the larger chunks of parsnip were a bit tough. I will say that I’m a fairly picky eater, but I went with two somewhat less picky older relatives, and they quickly went from complaining about the lack of protein to saying they didn’t care because it was so good. The server also humoured us kindly even though we were a bit messy in how we ordered things. The restaurant was empty, which is a bit concerning for a Saturday at 1:30 PM, but it did mean it was quite quiet and we could take our time talking.

                                  So they serve up great food. The chefs r creative. A lot of thought goes into their dishes. They make very nice cocktails. The waiter was excellent. Nice booths and ambience. Everything 5 out of 5. Then u get all that right and serve the risotto on a plate with 4 sizeable chips in it. Throw those plates out. Don't ruin all your hardwork by not fixing something so simple. Besides the fact it's not sanitary. I'm amazed with all the attention to detail they let that slip. Chipped plates are not sanitary neither. Bacteria can b harder to remove. I'll go back but I'll tell them no chipped plates.
