Southern Roots - Grand Hotel
1847 Bar in Southern Roots
Every great hotel has a great bar to steal away to, and 1847 is ours. 1847 is home to the beverage arts, with Grand Garden-to-glass crafted cocktails, local libations and signature wines by the glass all getting in on the act. The setting of choice for savoring house-made elixirs, quiet conversation, or the easy company of new friends.

The service was wonderful. The place seemed a little small and the lack of dress code was not very appealing (too casual). The menu needs to be expanded, but the food we ordered was cooked well and was good. Fairly noisy as well.
I would recommend for the experience, but not for the food we had. The Pork and Beans was quite good, but the half chicken was very bland, and small. There wasn’t much flavor in the sauce at all. It was just...sweet. The chicken itself wasn’t very flavorful either. Just nothing special or worth the hefty price tag. The broccoli WAS good. The potato’s were okay.
Food was delicious and the service was super great. I love what they did with the place. Very fresh and tasty. My husband loved the gumbo and salad and I loved the fresh fish. Will come again!
Bar service was great. After seated, we waited for over 20 minutes to be waited on- we were one of 3 tables on a Sunday night. There was confusion amongst the servers- this is the ONLY reason for the 4/5 stars. The arugula salad was noteworthy and the fillet was one of the best. Highly recommend.
Southern Roots is an upscale restaurant inside the Grand Hotel at Point Clear. It is very expensive. Too expensive for what's offered. A five star restaurant in any city would run circles around it. I guess they think that they're the only game in town for this level of food, service and atmosphere. They are wrong.
It was absolutely delightful! The restaurant is gorgeous! The view is spectacular! And the food was amazing!
Food was tasty yet healthy. A difficult combination achieved skillfully.
Service was attentive yet not intrusive. Great experience.
Roasted grouper was fabulous. The scallops were outstanding and our waiter, Dalton , was top notch.
Food was VERY disappointing! Ordered wahoo, came in a bowl with argugala and was tasteless! Very limited menu...no reasonable priced steak offered. Only three desert choices. We got the chocolate cake, it was dry and icing was white chocolate that was hard as a rock. We used to love this restaurant before they made all the changes, but no more. I highly recommend Marriott bring back the previous chefs and menu items.
Beautiful view, great service, fresh food but limited menu. Would recommend.
Great view but service and food need some improvement to be a go to spot
We wanted to absolutely love this restaurant. We were so looking forward to a new place to try at The Grand Hotel.
Let's start with the positive:
Pros: Lovely ambience, tastefully decorated, well-appointed, lamb croquettes were delicious, chocolate dessert was memorable
And now for the aspects which need improvement:
The check-in for our reservation was a bit awkward; it took longer than usual to just click something on a computer; we were seated next to a table in complete disarray with dirty dishes which you will understand later why this small item became a bigger issue...
Waited 45 minutes to just order our cocktails. .. We actually started to leave and then, were asked to please stay and give them a chance. Apparently, there had been a mix-up with a waitstaff member who had a very large, noisy party and then, also assigned to us... He could not handle it all... someone else had to step in..They comped one beverage per person (2 total). We were not looking for that, but in all fairness, the gesture was made.
Back to those dirty dishes, the table next to us was never cleared the entire evening and we were one of the last tables in the restaurant to leave. We are not picky diners (look at my other glowing reviews)... we love everything from complete hole-in-the-walls, dives, diners to exquisite, fine dining... I would expect even the dives to at least clean the table next to us at some point during the evening. It is not appealing to look at dirty dishes, soiled napkins, etc. especially at a fine, dining establishment. If I want to look at dirty dishes, I could have stayed home and not have to wait to eat.
Beautiful new restaurant with good fresh farm to table food and cocktails. Service was excellent.
Food was quite good but not hot — first night opening problems perhaps.
Impeccable Restaurant. We dined here for my husband's birthday. The service was perfect. The food was amazing. Everyone's order was cooked just the way we liked it. The staff overall was attentive without being intrusive. We were visited by John S. Several times to be sure we were having a great experience. Will return!
This was the 5th or 6th time this year to the Grand Steak House. Each and every time the results have been exceptional. Can’t wait to go again.
Terribly overpriced. $360 for 3 people. One bottle of nice wine; two appetizers and 3 steaks for the table of 3.? Had to pay extra for a side of fries and asparagus when the entrees ran @$35 or more each. Ridiculous! Will not return.
PS. My husband and I ordered strip steaks but were served very fatty ribeyes instead. We would have sent our meat back to the kitchen but we were treating my ill and bevreaved mother to a “nice night out” and did not want her to know our disappointment at her choice of restaurant.
By the way, my husband is a LIFETIME PLATINUM member of Marriott. Although we do not expect the entire meal to be compted, some consideration would be appreciated.

Excellent service and wonderful food. We will definitely return to this steakhouse.
Food was great, service great as well! I recomend the new York strip with grand sauce and smoked rib meat topping!
Maybe it was just that night but everything was extremely average. Wife's steak was dry and over cooked and nothing really impressed or stood out. Wait staff was very polite but attention to detail and customers didn't seem to be their priority. Would have been expected at a chain steak restaurant, not expected or appreciated when this is supposed to be a moderate to upscale steakhouse.
Dinning at the Grand Steak House is very relaxing with excellent service and food. No one is rushing you and the selections are excellent. We have been there several times now and each time is the same quality and friendly atmosphere. It is also quiet and romantic if you are in the need for a nice night out with each other.
Disappointing food and service, not what we experienced in the past
Wonderful experience! View was amazing! Our waitress was incredible - we had a toddler with us and she was so helpful and accommodating! Recommend!!
Great atmosphere and staff. Our server was very attentive. However the food was not a fine dining experience. Not sure if I would ever go back for dining.
Grand Steakhouse is an excellent destination for an enjoyable evening. The tables have great bay views and elegance pervades throughout. The quality of the food product is evident with its preparation superb. Our waitress was very professional, confident, efficient and delightful. It was a wonderful birthday evening.
Expected more from this restaurant. While there were open tables and plenty of staff, the service was underwhelming at best. Steak was good, but wife's fish was overcooked. Manager was nice and accommodating, acknowledging our special occasion.
We went to the Grand Steakhouse after having a great meal at the Saltwater Grill the night before. Both restaurants share the same kitchen/chefs so we were looking forward to another fantastic meal. The waitress was fantastic and brought us an amuse-bouche of a strawberry with balsamic and goat cheese. It was delicious so our expectations were high.
Then we received our french onion soup. The presentation was great but the flavor didn't match the presentation. It was possibly the blandest french onion soup I have ever eaten and was definitely the blandest at any restaurant labeled as a "steakhouse." My wife had the scallop appetizer and they were fabulous, continuing the theme of great fish dishes at these restaurants. We both had the filet for our main course and we also had the whipped mashed potatoes and vegetables. The filets were cooks well and came with homemade bernaise sauce, which was good. They were made with either peppercorns or some other seasoning that didn't appeal to my wife at all. I thought the steaks were fantastic but did find it odd they would add any seasoning to such a good cut of beef when already offering sauce to accompany it. The whipped potatoes were just ok. The vegetables were more of a goulash than mixed vegetables, which is what we expected. However, the vegetables stand out at both restaurants as they are farmed fresh in the chef garden right outside the restaurant doors.
Overall, the meal was good but not worth what we paid as we were underwhelmed in a couple of areas.
Food and view were outstanding. Well prepared and presented. Our waiter, Roy, was absolutely wonderful. We enjoy his service and knowledge.
Took my family there for a graduation dinner and it was Fabulous! We are all foodies and each person found something that interested them. It was pricy but oh so good! I would rank it up there with Ruth's Chris Steak House.
Steaks were perfectly prepared! Extensive wine selection! Appetizers were very tasty and the seafood was extremely fresh. We will return. This was not our original choice but our travel was long so we chose the restaurant in the hotel. Very happy we did so...worth the cost!
Excellent restaurant. Food was very good and servi ve was friendly and timing was good.
relaxing, perfect view of sunset, all requests met, memorable.
Great appetizers and fabulous steaks. Wonderful meal. Service was outstanding.
Every bite was delicious! We really appreciated the subdued, quiet atmosphere, and the impeccable service! We were also fortunate to get the perfect table by a window to enjoy a beautiful sunset. Hope to go back again and will certainly recommend to any friend traveling to The Grand.
Our dinner at the Grand Steakhouse was excellent!! Everything from the bread, our steaks, dessert, and drinks were excellent!! Antonia, our server, was very informative and helpful with suggestions. Can't wait to go back!!
Great food, drinks and service. Had great table overlooking the bay. Great wine selection. Presentation of food was very good. We both had filet. It was very tasty. Our waiter was great.
The food was excellent and great for my husbands 50th birthday. Service was a little slow but may have been because our waitress seemed rushed like she had too many tables. Also, prices are extremely high with a limited selection.
The food and service were both top notch and this was a great choice for our anniversary!
Tremendous experience. Gerald was exceptional. The food was superb. Service impeccable. We will return.
Great food and service. It is a great place to watch the sun set. The only problem, which was minor, is after the sun did set the lighting was almost non existent. Nothing terrible but for those who wear glasses of need the extra light to see it was difficult. However, overall it was a great dining experience.
