Chicago's Son of a Butcher serves modern American cuisine that is as fanciful and rustic as the name suggests, crafting tempting pub grub in its charming eatery. The piggy pops fried pork belly cubes topped with avocado salsa and queso fresco and the traditional Buffalo smoked chicken wings make excellent starters. Some of Son of a Butcher's specialty entrées include the half chicken with pepita green salsa, the “straight outta DF” skirt steak with chipotle salsa and Chihuahua cheese and the butcher platter laden with barbecue brisket, braised pork, rib tips and wings. Superb sandwich and burger plates are also popular with diners at Son of a Butcher, with the most inventive options including the rise and shine burger topped with scrambled eggs, chorizo, pepper jack cheese and avocado on French toast, the roasted veggie sandwich with fresh mozzarella and the smoked gouda chicken sandwich with red pepper aioli.

    I would avoid Son of Butcher for quite some time while the new owner works out the kinks. And there were plenty of them. First, I made a reservation for 6 on OpenTable about 5 days in advance. Upon arriving at the restaurant I was told by the owner that they don't take reservations and that he could not access his OpenTable account to see the reservations that were made. So we waited. We didn't wait long, to my surprise, but he brought us to 3 two-top tables. After explaining that we didn't want to sit in 3 groups of 2 he suggested we wait a couple minutes because a table outside was opening up. 20 minutes later we were seated at tables that accommodated 4 so 2 of us still had to sit at a adjacent table. Seating aside, our server seemed uninterested and getting our food and drinks was painfully slow given how empty the restaurant was that evening. The only redeeming quality of the whole experience were the tacos. If you brave the mediocre service....get the tacos.

    Whisk has not done anything well with this place at all. They were out of menus, out of two items we ordered and the food that we did receiver lacked so much flavor.

    Made a reservation with this app, accepted time & date. Showed up & not only was it closed but a padlock was on the door. What's the deal?

    Always amazing - from ambiance to service to the personable general manager who always talks to us. A total package for a neighborhood gem!

    Tried this based on location. We were meeting friends from different areas and this worked for location. However, we will be back for the food next time. We were a group of 6 and everyone loved the food! Service was great and the music was good, but we didn't have to scream at each other.

    came here with a group of 6, celebrating my dad's birthday weekend. they were very accommodating and all the food was amazing! definitely recommend.

    My friends and I went for Easter brunch and found the food to be mediocre at best. The Pound of Piggy was good but nothing particularly special. The biscuits with orange and chorizo gravy were pretty gross. Additionally, I found the host, the bar tender, and our server all to provide very mediocre to poor service. The three of them lacked warmth, attention to detail, and generally an interest in actually serving patrons. I really had high hopes for this restaurant and was severely disappointed.

    Chef Frank is completely on point! Thee service, ambiance & most importantly the FOOD, will make this LoganSquare/Avondale area a prime dining location!

    Food was fantastic. Had the bone marrow- best i have had...ever. great cocktails and simple yet fantastic wine. Menu changes and will become a lit more risqué. We will be back!
