Somerset Ratings and Reviews
This was one of the best "dinners out" we've had in a while - food, service, ambiance, wine recommendations, etc.. everything was fantastic and we will be returning soon! Smoked beets, house rolls, Spanish octopus all delicious starters. For entrees we ordered one baby lettuce salad, the duck, tenderloin, scallops and they were able to accommodate my fiancé's shellfish allergy in modifying the squid ink pasta. The tenderloin was cooked perfectly and the duck was outstanding.
Somerset was overall very good. The 4 dishes that we had were all excellent. The price point for the our main dishes were a little high to be honest. The bass and the salmon were very good, small portions size, but pretty pricey. Not sure I would take my husband here to eat the fish options, since I'm sure it would not fill him up. The servers where very nice, but very very pushy. They came over multiple times to see if we were through with our food, when we were not. I felt a little rushed to be honest. Great vibes and I will definitely be back, even if its just for the BEET TAR TAR!!! That was AMAZING!!!!
Great vibe immediately entering the restaurant. Modern décor without being stark...far from minimalist. Great downstairs bar scene with a smaller bar upstairs but as well done as the main bar. The beet salad was the best beet salad I've had in the city. Large chunks of red beets. Most salads are a mere few cubes. This was well worth the price. Venison loin was outstanding and my wife's salmon was delicious as well.
Highly recommend Somerset.
Everything about this restaurant is amazing! The server guided us through the meal and the food was all fantastic! They even offered us complimentary chocolates because we loved them so much! That extra touch is something restaurants rarely do anymore. We will be back!
The food was great - creative menu, perfect portions, high-quality products. The service was also great - "team" environment, friendly staff from top to bottom. I also like the open-kitchen design. Not everyone does, but I find it interesting to see such good food in preparation.
Also, we were there on a Sunday night after a huge snowstorm. So our ambiance was perhaps more quiet/casual than usual, who knows.
Josh was the BEST! My boyfriend and I went for our second year anniversary and they gave us special menus with a "Happy Anniversary" message in the top right corner. We were given two complimentary glasses of cava to toast to our love, which was also a nice touch. The cocktails were great. The food was unreal. The whole roast chicken is definitely enough food for three. I loved how they cooked the sausage underneath the crispy skin. Such a unique technique I hadn't seen before! Other standouts were the beef tenderloin and the kale and brussels sprout salad. The seared Spanish octopus had a few chewy bites, but the flavors were still way above average. The bar is adorable, and it's a huge space with plenty of room to spread out if you're a large group. The modern detailing and cool light fixtures really put this one over the top on ambiance. Loved, loved, loved! Highly recommend.
Sunday brunch celebrating my birthday could not have had a better experience. The food was delicious along with the bloody mary drinks. We will come here again soon with another couple as it was that wonderful. The banquets are so cozy to eat in and the view is nice looking out on the pedestrians walking past.
We had a fantastic experience Friday night for dinner. Impeccable service in a beautiful setting. We sat in a beautiful booth on the second floor, so fun to look down at the rest of the restaurant.
The beet tartare was outstanding along with the chicken dinner for two. Excellent cocktails and wine. We will definitely be coming back!
While we had a nice meal at Somerset and the food was really delicious, the service was a disaster. Our waiter was running between the main floor and the upstairs dining room. There was zero attention to our table and it took nearly 30 minutes to clear our plates between courses. We didn't order dessert simply due to the 3 hours we had already been at the restaurant. The food was good but a three hour dinner is too long for a three course business meal.
Overall the restaurant is very nice and food very good. My one suggestion is that the hostess needs to be welcoming and knowledgeable. Reservations were made ahead of time for breakfast/brunch and restaurant was not busy at the time. We were celebrating a special occasion and with a near empty restaurant we were seated on the far corner next to the waiters computer station.
We absolutely loved our meal and our waiter Meadow. Everyone was knowledgeable, interesting and so helpful. Meadow made great recommendations, every dish was fabulous! We love that the portions are shareable. We all agreed Somerset is our new favorite restaurant!
Terrific food and service. Wait staff and sommelier are extremely helpful and friendly. No snobbery at all - just down to earth friendly service. Meals were delicious and the deserts were extraordinary ! Great place for a date or business dinner. Seating on balcony was also a cool option if you have a big group.
Everything we had was delicious! The roast chicken with chicken sausage under the skin was amazing - fed three of us (and we are good eaters). The waitress recommended smoked beet tartare - and it was amazing. Also the vegetable sides. In fact, everything was not the usual and provided unexpected pleaures. Service was attentive and friendly. The restaurant is named for Somerset Maugham in honor of his Razor's Edge hero who returns to Chicago after WW I before moving to Paris. Maybe he would have stayed in Chicago if he could have eaten at Somerset!
Celebrated a birthday and the food was amazing as was the service! Our server, Josh was outstanding as was the floor sommelier, Laura (I believe). Started with Beef (not smoked beet) Tartare and grilled octopus. Some of the best we have ever had!
Shared 3 entrees: squid ink pasta with seafood, short ribs and sea bass. All 3 were divine! Birthday boy said it was the best meal he had ever had! YEA!
This was my second visit to Somerset. The first time the food was great as was the service. Not sure what happened but my second visit seemed to be at a totally different restaurant. My biggest complaint was that our server was HORRIBLE! His name was Michael and he was incredibly pretentious. Kept walking around the restaurant with an air about him like he was the owner of the place not the waiter. We were seated, he handed us our menus, we placed a drink order, then we didn't see him again for 30 minutes. We sat there sipping our water wondering where our drinks were. Waiting 30 minutes for a drink order is incredibly unacceptable. I wish that was the end of our bad service. He kept walking around the restaurant back and forth not really doing anything, then came back and took our appetizer orders. Knowing how long our last drink order took, I then ordered another drink. after 15 minutes, I asked him where my drink was and he replied I didn't know you had ordered a drink, I thought you were complimenting me on how good the drink was. I watched as the bartender made my martini and put it off to the side. Again our waiter was just walking about, after 15 minutes I again asked him where my drink was, he went to the bar, grabbed the martini, brought it over and lied to me that the bartender had just made it, and I told the waiter I knew he lied. He just laughed it off. So twice I waited 30 minutes for a drink order, thankfully he does not bring out the food because I probably wouldn't have gotten it.
Sadly, the food on our second visit was not very good either. I ordered the same dish I had ordered the first time. A squid ink pasta with shrimp and calamari. My dish had 2 shrimp and 4 calamari rings in it (yes I counted). For a dish that was $28 it should had more than 2 shrimp. Also my wife had a short rib that and while she enjoyed the flavor, it was very tough.
I enjoyed this restaurant very much our first visit, what happened to this restaurant?
The wait staff, while amiable, repeatedly failed to get the right plates to the right people in our party and missed altogether the squid ink pasta. Removing that item from the bill was a nice gesture. The squid ink pasta then was a disappointment as was the Spanish octopus. Where was the octopus? Smoked beet tartare was the best appetizer by far. The beef tartare had mayonnaise. Not good. Venison loin was excellent as was the chicken although much hotter would make it much better.
Communication among the staff and better management is key here. No need to come back. Been there. Done that.
This place was super cute inside, such a cool vibe with navy and gold decor that I loved. We did have to wait about 10-15 min past our reservation for a table at brunch but our server was very friendly and knowledgeable and we really enjoyed our food! The Madagascar latte was very yummy and I loved my breakfast sandwich with the turkey sausage. My boyfriend got the baked eggs which was also yummy. A little pricy for brunch but somewhat expected for a trendy Chicago spot. Would definitely recommend!
