Sol Mar Restaurant & Marisqueira is one of the leading seafood restaurants in New Jersey. It is family operated, opened in 1957, and focused on authentic Portuguese & Mediterranean cuisines. The interior of Sol-Mar is handcrafted as carefully as the menu, as diners are transported across the Atlantic as soon as they walk through the doors thanks to the authentic decor and style of the dining room. It is located just a few blocks from Newark Penn Station, close to Newark International Airport, in the famous neighborhood of Ironbound.
Sol Mar’s menu experience featuring the finest seafood catch from regional coasts and international waters in Portugal and all over the world is showcased at your table. Diners who aren't feeling the taste of seafood can still order other dishes such as grilled porterhouse steak, pork chops in garlic sauce, and chicken marsala. First time I ventured out to Newark from New York City and was pleasantly surprised to have found Sol-Mar. Excellent food and friendly and attentive service. Would definitely dine here again next time I’m in Newark.

Always an excellent time. Party of 5. There are 2 vegetarian options. One is a huge vegetarian paella. The other is a plate of rice , beans, vegetables and boiled potatoes. It’s not pretty of thrilling to look at by any means but it’s good . We had fresh cheese, olives, bread and butter on the table first. Of course we start with sangria. My friend had shrimp. Her husband had breed ribs. Her son had a bone steak. My husband had salmon. We were too full for dessert but two of us took the lemon cheesecake home. I wanted creme brulee to take home but they didn’t tell me that they would just put what looks like yellow pudding, and a plastic container and that’s it and so when I opened it at the restaurant to have a look, that’s what I saw and I questioned it and the server said well they can’t really do the crème brûlée that’s something that they do at the end because they have to of course set fire to the sugar so they can’t really put the sugar on top and do that and send it home so my thing is they should’ve told me that when I asked for it that that would come that way just like the pudding and I really didn’t want it so I sent it back because it’s not the same. So I left without taking home to serve, which was fine. That’s my only thing they should’ve really said this is how we have to give it to you. Do you still want it?? so parking is across the street in a lot it’s not paid parking or valet parking . There’s a guy there that watches the cars for you and when you come back and getting your car, it’s expected that you give him a little something. So whatever that is $5 dollars , etc. you know , whatever your heart desires to give him. The weight staff there is always accommodating and very nice and respectful. If the owner is there, he will come around and talk to you. Bathrooms are downstairs so I don’t know what they would do in handicap situation because there’s no elevator, but maybe they have something that I’m not aware of.

My family and enjoyed a late night dinner at Sol-Mar as we were exploring the ironbound area. It was simply amazing the food was very flavorful and the staff were quick and friendly. Our waiter, Miguel made us feel right at home. We will definitely be coming back!

We love going there to have dinner whenever we are staying overnight at an airport hotel before flying out the next day. Food is delicious and more than ample, and the servers are so friendly and helpful. It’s a favorite go-to place.
