Smithy’s unique aesthetic is undeniably special with Steve Hermann’s exceptional talent at play in the stunning indoor/outdoor space. The building, originally a Blacksmith shop, feels fresh, bright and modern. Exposed brick walls with white weathered board and batten walls, reclaimed table tops, and school house chairs, create a beautiful and welcoming space that is airy and open, yet intimate. With a world-class courtyard, there is no better place to dine outdoors in Santa Barbara.

The food was good
Terrific food, terrific service, terrific setting. Will definitely go back.
So great! Food was wonderful and staff was impressive! Made our anniversary special.
We went for Father’s day brunch. The restaurant wasn’t fully booked but somehow it took about 65 minutes to get our food. When we finally got our food, it was not all at once and left two out six people waiting 10 more minutes for their order. One of the orders was a sandwich with French fries, somehow they had run out of sour dough and it was served with burger bread and the worse home fries ever as they had also run out of fries. The waitress was apologetic but a little too late. Hard to wait over an hour for lunch with three children ages 10-5 years old.
Sadly, a very poor experience. We'd made reservations for 7 for a graduation lunch, yet despite the reservation and a nearly empty restaurant got seated at an elevated table with stools rather than an actual table with chairs. The restaurant was serving a limited menu for brunch, yet was still out of several items (including french fries). Our food wasn't served for over an hour, and once it arrived several items were simply inedible - potatoes fried to charcoal and a steak that was charred on the outside and raw on the inside and tasted of fuel. A plate of three dry pancakes and a dozen blueberries didn't seem to warrant its $18 price. Our poor server was so apologetic over the wait and the selections issues so we just didn't have the heart to tell her that the food was quite poor. And this was meant to be a celebration - I'm afraid it didn't feel that way at all.
Small plates were welcome! A little noisy when we arrived because of the theater crowd which diminished quickly! Excellent food indoor dining and outdoor too.
After showing up on time for our reservation, we were offered to get a drink or two at the bar because it would be a 20 minute wait.
Why take reservations?
Wouldn't give any stars if that were an option.
Few misfires in the food, gritty bread crumbs ruining texture of arugula salad, which needed more grilled peaches and a nice piece of grilled bread alongside. Scallops and sweet pea risotto definite hit; grilled shrimp and beans overwhelmed by chimichurri
We picked Smithy’s for our daughter’s graduation from college. Grace who helped me with planning our event was excellent. The restaurant and patio are gorgeous, the food delicious and interesting, and our server was great.
Five stars all the way!
Been there twice now. Food is very good. Service leaves a lot to be desired. And it’s impossible to carry on a conversation.
Everything was stellar, from the beautiful courtyard setting to the attentive service and the delicious food. We shared dishes across the menu and nothing disappointed.
Loved the decor and the gorgeous outdoor courtyard with a fireplace, tress and great lighting, but most importantly was the food- out of this word. Loved the Burrata Salad, the Carrots, and the Ribs!
The food and drink at Smithy are fantastic. But that isn't the reason to go there. You go to Smithy because the people that work there are incredible human beings who make one feel welcome while delivering professional performance in a relaxed and non-stressed manner.
I will enjoy the food here again soon. Although it took a bit to get seated and get service this time, and my scallop was overdone. They made everything right and my new scallop was perfect. Everything else was perfect too.
They encourage you to get 2 to 3 plates each, but we got 1 each and shared an app, which was plenty. Great atmosphere. Grace, our server, was excellent.
We have been wanting to try dinner at Smithy's Kitchen + Bar for some time as we had only been by the bar so I went ahead and made a reservation for Jen's 48th birthday. The food was delicious with very good service. We will be returning again for a Father's Day Brunch too for my dad.
Excellent outdoor dining experience.. outstanding staff... papradelle wirh peas fantastic.
Overall, my family & I thought the food was delicious and excellent; however, the price point was high. The outside dining atmosphere was a lovely setting amongst several trees, with picnic style bench seating but they do have a few tables with all chairs. I was uncomfortable with the hard bench seating, as we had several courses & were dining for a few hours. The inside dining was lovely, clean & very trendy. You won't be disappointed if you decide to try this place but expect to pay a little extra & maybe share your plated food as this seems to be their dining experience concept.
Very interesting menu, stuff for vegans, good ingredients, creative shared plates, small portions , limited wine list.
Very hard noisy room, conversation hard to hear
Service very slow( because of kitchen?), felt ignored. Not very busy for a Friday dinner. Waiter obsequious when engaged. Bar eating looked good. Another B+ Santa Barbara restaurant.
Lovely experience overall. Would be much better though if the menu always included vegetarian and vegan entrees. Even the bread has milk in it. Too bad.
I was served a whole blackened fish (blackened was not a choice on the menu) on a huge bed of yellow tasteless rice. The presentation was the worst I have seen in a high end restaurant. No offer to debone the fish. I loved Arts and Letters in the old days. Sadly the Somerset and now Smithy have failed to satisfy me.
Fabulous dinner, excellent service on the beautiful patio.
Grace is amazing!
The food seemed like fresh from the great local farmer's market combined in tasty and innovative ways. Was our second time there and noticed ingredient changes that kept even old menu items new and unique. Plus the outdoor courtyard was nicely heated for a very pleasant anniversary meal.
We had a very positive experience. The food is excellent, but the service lacks behind the kitchen. If they can manage that, this could be a Santa Barbara great spot. 15y SB residents.
Try and get a table in the patio! Exceptional patio! Food is inventive and well prepared! Service is solid! Lots of tequila options if you're a tequila fan!
This was our second visit to Smithy and it was just as wonderful as the first. Love the outdoor sitting on the patio and we also like the fact the the menu has something for just about everyone.
Our server was incredibly sweet, patient and very knowledgeable.
We are a family of foodies and restauranteurs -so we come with a critical eye. It’s was exceptional!
It’s now our local go to!
We enjoyed our food. We liked our server. We enjoyed the atmosphere. I wish they had Mocktails on the beverage list, most restaurants with “hand-crafted” cocktails do. Just a little disappointed in the service area, I wish restaurants would spend some time training the staff. It would have been nice to have a clean plate after each course, they are very small plates. We had to ask to have our table wiped off before dessert. The hostess actually was going to put the dessert menu on a wet, crumb-filled table. My pet peeves are: Wanting to take my plate away while I'm still chewing... Removing ANYONE’S plate before the table is finished eating. Just saying... Oh, and please don't take the signed credit card receipt while we are still enjoying our coffee, seems over eager to know what kind of tip was received.
Perfect evening to sit outside. Cocktails were excellent and the service second to none. I was astounded by the knowledge our waitress had if the fare and cocktails. Food was excellent.
Food was amazing. Service, not so much.
While waiting for our table, we ordered drinks at the bar. We asked the bartender for water, and he said he wasn’t able to serve us because he didn’t have any (he generally made it seem like it would be a big burden). However, he was eventually able to pull a glass and pour some water for one of us.
Our server was also a bit brusque - we had a dairy-free vegetarian in our party, and he not very helpful in giving us advice on what we could order from the menu.
We also asked for bread, and was told it’d be an additional $2. We went ahead and ordered, and watched it be incorrectly delivered to the table next to us. This was not corrected until we inquired about where our bread went - and after all our other dishes were on the table.
Finally (and probably the most frustrating point of the evening), we ordered the market fish (as one of two entrees). When we placed our order, our server indicated that they may be out. However, there was never any follow up, so we figured we were good to go. When our food came, there was no fish; we asked about the it, and he replied that they were out. He never followed up, nor have us a chance to order an entree in its place.
We get this restaurant is trying to project hip vibes, but the general “uninterested” attitude from the waitstaff was really frustrating.
We would like to note, however, that the food was great.
Patio dining delightful
Great food. Great service. Great ambiance.
A beautifully conceived and decorated environment with a stunning courtyard with fireplace. Probably the most attractive restaurant in Santa Barbara.
The food was great, and the offerings varied so there was something for everyone. Sit outside if you can!
I don't write reviews very often. This was a wonderful experience. The space is so beautiful and the patio is great. Service was quick and friendly, everyone on staff popped in to help at some point. Most importantly the food was creative and delicious. This is a great place for a special occasions, date nights, or sharing with friends. It also seems like a great place for happy hour. Highly recommend and we will be back. 10/10.
The food was good but very salty. It took about 25 minutes to get our first drink and our waitress asked us to close out our bill at 9:00 on a Saturday night after just bringing out the desert. She said she'd be leaving soon to go home. Very unprofessional.
First time at Smithys. Loved the patio dining area. Creative menu choices but nothing stood out as excellent
Was very pleased by the ambience although there could have been soft music in the backround. There was no music for Mother's Day brunch
Our meal came out after others who arrived much later already had theirs.
We've only been there for brunch but will go back for dinner
The ambiance in the court yard is one of the best in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately the food was over priced and nothing special. Service was slow.
Mother’s Day brunch. The outside courtyard was charming. The food was delicious and very well presented. The service was very good. A delightful brunch.
Wonderful dining area outside. Attentive service. Food was engaging - but a little heavy. Prices for brunch a bit steep - especially $16 for a glass of Saumur rose that sells for $18/bottle at BevMo.
Overall though - a very enjoyable place to relax - and have enough space and time to share a conversation in normal voice.
