Sir Winston Wine Loft & Restaurant
The food was very good, but I was surprised that a bar would be out of sweet vermouth, and I was shocked that a wine bar would be out of 2 of the pinot noir selections from the wine list. I hope that they can improve on these service issues.
We visited the bar and had dinner on a Sun night and business was slow. The staff was very personable and attentive, service was great, and food and drinks were fabulous. Will definitely visit this establishment again!
Staffing was short (Christmas day) we knew because our waiter told us. :( He also told us that he was the bartender, and that’s why he had to go back and ask about everything we asked. Everyone that was working was hustling like crazy, but it just took away a bit from the enjoyment feeling like we were an imposition.
This was a very good resturant for our family on Christmas Eve after church! The food and the service was exceptional!
The food quality was good, but overpriced - like much of Winston-Salem. Great location and ambiance. Service was lacking for the price.
Enjoyed the food and experience was good also. We will go again.
Absolutely wonderful food and service. Brian provides excellent recommendations along with great service. We highly recommend Sir Winston’s Wine Loft and Restaurant!!!
Met my parents here for dinner and we enjoyed a delicious, three course meal with cocktails and wine. The sausage pimento dip appetizer is served with crackers and flatbread and the whole dish is delicious. My Aviation gin cocktail was perfectly crafted. Our server, AJ, was attentive, humorous and timely. We ordered the filet, scallops and cornish hen as entrees. The mashed potatoes were a little too smooth but we all have our preferences when it comes to potatoes. Steak was done perfectly, cornish hen was seasoned well, both were served in portions that were aligned with their value. But the standout dish was the scallops with risotto. Wow. Plump, huge scallops perfectly cooked with a creamy beet risotto. After entrees, we ordered the NY cheesecake and pecan pie. Cheesecake was exactly what you want: not too dense, not too fluffy. Pecan pie pairs well with decaf. The wine list is extensive and I was happy to see a decent selection of Bordeaux! The layout and atmosphere is great because you can go to Sir Winston for pretty much any occasion: dinner with the parents, business meeting, date night, friends happy hour. Recommend.
Thank you for the wonderful review! We greatly appreciate it! Thanks for sharing and hope to see you again soon!
This was BAD! The service was so slow. We were there for an hour and a half.... we had breakfast, breakfast shouldn’t be that hard to mess up. The omelette was ice cold, as was the coffee. They forgot about the toast and anything else we asked for like butter. Will not be returning.
Could be great, but needs some work. This was our first time visiting Sir Winston - we were excited to have a new spot in downtown. The decor needs some help - it's too stark and plain and there is nothing to absorb noise or provide extra ambiance. However, there was no noise to absorb because our table was literally the ONLY group in the entire restaurant on a Thursday night (not good). I don't even recall background music and the lighting was WAY to bright. We felt like we were on display to all of downtown vs. dining in a hip, cool restaurant. Two of the items we specifically planned to order (they are still on the website) were no longer on the menu which was disappointing (we were told the chef quit and took those with him). Our server AJ was great - personable, funny and just the right amount of attention. With some easy changes (add some plants, some pops of color, some music), this place has lots of potential. I am planning to return with some friends in a few weeks and hope to see some changes by then. If not, I'm fearful this place may not last for long.
We ordered burgers. They were a mess. The gooey cheese sauce made the buns fall apart. I ended up eating it with a fork. We ordered one medium and the other medium rare. Both came out well done. On the positive side, the sweet potato fries were very good - crispy on the outside and soft inside.
When we arrived the place was in disarray in terms of service. Had to wait even though there were only a few tables and most of the bar occupied. It seems they are understaffed as there were many tables that had not been cleared.
What an unexpected gem. Great food, absolutely top-notch service from the kitchen, wait staff & management, great looking place, all hidden inside a hotel in downtown Winston. I'll be going back, and so will anyone I talk to who lives there!
Second time coming to sir Winston for dinner. Was pleased with the food - tasted amazing and looked great. Our waitress however was fairly MIA during our meal and forgot parts of our order only to disappear for nearly 30-45 minutes to fetch the remaining items. Really like the food options here but serving staff could be improved!
The Wine Loft was a bit disappointing. The food was not that tasty and the environment felt cheap. We did however have a delicious bread pudding and enjoyed our wine selection. Honestly with all of the selections now in Winston I won’t be back.
We had a wonderful experience. The food was very tasty and service was excellent. It was a very busy time (Wake Forest Homecoming) so noise level was very high. The hostess did a wonderful job as the Conductor.
A wonderful dinner for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary. Service was great (Sarah). And food was outstanding.
Unique open venue with artistic decor and an elevated loft above. Food was very tasty and wine list very expansive.
Wonderful dinner... a bit loud in there but food was fabulous!
The food was very average. I ordered coffee but never got my spoon. The service was not experienced.
The only reason I gave the 3 on the food was one reason. I ordered the Risotto with beets and peas, and it was not risotto. It was just regular rice. The food still tasted good, so I wasn't going to complain to the waiter, but it definitely wasn't risotto. The steak that was ordered by my husband was good as well.
Very marginal service with inexperienced wait staff. No knowledge of wine service protocols. She poured the whole bottle into two glasses after opening. No serving spoon with the appetizer, even though it was runny. Charged for the first bottle we ordered, even though they didn’t have it, and the replacement bottle was less expensive. Long way to go to compete with 10 restaurants 1 -2 blocks away.
The food was average but good. Somewhere we would eat again. Unfortunately one person in our party had their order forgotten and had to wait as the cooked it separately. The wait staff was very courteous and five star despite that accident. Not all ingredients in dishes were desirable but menu was unique.
Food I had was great. Service was good. Nice place to bring a date. Quiet spot to hear each other talk.
Super cool and hip, GREAT food, great wines by the glass. Don’t miss it.
I don’t typically write reviews, but because my friends and I received very slow service that’s why I’m doing one. I asked the server to put my friend’s drink on my tab and that didn’t happen. Also, it took about 10-15 minutes for our food order to finally get taken. I thought this shouldn’t have happened given it wasn’t too busy.
Has lots of potential.......
Architecture is very interesting
Liked wine options...
Food selection is thoughtful...but execution was only fair
They had changed to a very limited menu for an event downtown without letting us know (called to confirm reservation). There was also a band playing that was good but way too loud for the small space
The food was good, but great service and atmosphere as well.
The food, drink, service and ambiance were all very good. However, the noise level was so loud that we could not hear each other except when the jazz singer took a break. Evidently, they have entertainment one night per week. So, go to Sir Winston but choose the night according to whether you want to talk or be entertained.
Service was slower than expected
The meal was delicious and the waiter was great. We used the valet and it was easy . My only issue was the noise factor. You could hear conversations from across the venue.
I was strongly recommended to visit your restaurant as it is a friends new favorite in WS. 3 friends and I all visited for the first time last Saturday 6/29/19 and we’re all sorely disappointed with the food and service. All 4 entrees got a 1 star rating as the turkey sandwich’s were dry and flavorless, Brussel sprouts were under cooked, salad and soup were watery. Service was extremely inattentive and actually up charged us for extra mayonnaise for our described dry turkey sandwiches. Our mission was not to get a comped meal but to add constructive criticism to the new and growing staff and restaurant. Looking back, a top notch restaurant would have comped the meals without question to avoid this kind of public review. Needless to say we were really disappointed with the whole experience.
Food was ok. Waitress knew nothing about the menu.
Very pretty place, very open and airy. Not sure about the under counter lighting at the bar... Who on earth is that flattering to? But our bartender, CJ, the Scotsman, was wonderful...attentive, charming, knowledgeable and engaging. We opted for dinner in the dining room which was pleasant. Service was very good and the food was very much to our liking. I got the sirloin and frites, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. One of our party ordered the pork chop and another the hen, both enjoyed their meals. No room for dessert but I've got to add that the house wines are really very nice. My chardonnay was oakie and maybe a little hint of sweet but I must say it was three glasses worth of good!
A must eat experience. If you want an energetic, fun place to eat, this is it. The food is succulent and the ambiance is great.
This was our second time at the Surkamp Winston and we laughed very disappointed after being very excited after our first visit. My trout was dry and mediocre at best.My wife had the pork chop and it was only OK as well. The highbspot was our service, though. Jeff did a great job and salvaged the evening for us.Will probably give it another try but if it is a repeat performance it’ll be our last time.
Great service. Loud ambiance - could use some sound dampening to allow reasonable conversation volume for guests.
Winston-Salem has yet another amazing place to eat downtown. Go if you can. Our experience was first rate!
Very noisy restaurant. Slow service. Minimalistic decor. No ambience at all. $4 charge to make side substitution with entree for a side of equal value. The waitress said it would be $3; however we were charged $4. The sides are $4 if you order them as a side in addition to your entree. Totally unreasonable. This was my second visit and it will definitely be my last.
Great addition to downtown Winston.
