The meal was excellent, tasty and hot. Service was wonderful, they were very attentive to our needs.
The view is stunning. Unfortunately, our server made several mistakes including ordering the wrong salad for me, switching the wines my husband and I ordered and bringing us wine ordered by another table. There was no apology or effort to make it right. The food was bland. Salmon was rather grey instead of vibrant, salad had wilted leaves, etc. service can make up for so-so food. That did not happen.
Probably just an anomaly. The server we had was very new. Lots of minor issues not fitting a place of this caliber. First off, let the lady order first. Not the kids, husband and then wife last. The food took an hour to arrive, was incorrect and only luke-warm. We had to ask the maiter’d for coffee who gruffly said “No” ... as a joke. When the server asked if we wanted honey on the biscuits, she then poured honey all over everything on the plate: biscuits, scones muffins and everything else. She didn’t ask how I wanted the prime rib. horseradish came all over the steak instead of on the side. —had to scrape it off. After giving my wife the incorrect meal, it took a while to get the server to come back over. Her response was the kitchen told her that was eggs sardou (2 large yellow eggs) It was eggplant parmesan.
At least twice we had to ask for a fork because one wasn’t brought with the meal. While I was still finishing up my meal, had about a quarter left on the plate and food in my mouth, she asked if we were ready for the desert tray. After she brought the desert tray, she had already taken away the dinner plates and all of the silverware. So we had to use our fingers (not COVID friendly) and made a huge mess on the tablecloth. When she brought the check she placed it on the other side of the table not near anybody. Again after we put in the credit card in the holder and left it next to me, she brought the check to sign and put it between the two kids at the far end of the table. At least 3 times we nearly got up to find someone, anyone, to help us with some issue. Finally, after the dinner plates were gone and all we had left were a couple things on the desert plate she asked if we wanted a to-go box. For desert plate leftovers. So, I’m not a rich snob, but with a place as elegant and wonderful as this, you’d think that the wait staff would know at least some basics. I mean, $50x4 people usually a $40 tip, and in this case, soooooo not worth it.
The food was wonderful. Our waitress was super, she joked with the kids and helped them find the food they were looking for.
Excellent food, service, and view of the Columbia River. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed our breakfast. Beautiful hotel. Used spa services as well.
We enjoyed a late(7pm) dinner.
The food was absolutely excellent. We ordered the lamb chops and filet mignon. The meat was prepared exactly to requested temperatures with savory peppercorn sauce. The side vegetables were cooked perfectly and the roasted carrots and broccoli had a butter sauce that brought all flavors together. The 3 onion soup was a delicious deviation from the traditional French onion soup.
Rarely, do I have a dining experience where every aspect of meal was above average. This was the exception.
Service was good and accommodating.
Ambience was quiet and social distancing observed and taken seriously.
Overall, a surprising gem. Considering the quality of the food, the reasonable prices and old world ambience, we are certain that once the word gets out in this peripandemic world, it may be hard to get a seat.
Thank you for your kind words.
Stunning views in a historic hotel. Fantastic food with everything made fresh to order. Intelligent wait staff who knew the menu and could actually answer questions about the food and paring wine list and made recommendations. And knew about the history of the hotel as well. Fantastic.
Thank you for sharing your comments.
I wouldn’t suggest the duck if you actually want to taste it. It was more like a Chinese orange chicken due to all the marmalade like sauce it was drenched in. My whole plate taste like orange. My wife’s seafood pasta was good and the drinks. Just skip spending the extra money on the duck.
Thank you for sharing your experience. i am sorry that our duck dish did not meet your expectations. We will revisit the sauce and make sure you will be happier at your next visit.
Fine dining at its best! Can't wait to go back for their Seafood Pasta.
Excellent meal in a wonderful historic place with view of the Columbia River. The food and service could not have been better.
thank you for sharing your experience.
It was fantastic! Everything was completely perfect as always! The staff is so kind. I can't ask for a better experience.
Food was terrible
Host and wait staff were great. The meals were not as good, however. One of the steaks was overcooked and it was a very tough piece of meat considering the price. The other was overly-garnished and chewy. The live music was entertaining. I would probably go back for the experience but I would not anticipate a meal that matches its price.
Food was very over cooked and over seasoned. Food was also very expensive for portion size. Service was good though.
We had a wonderful dinner at Simons Cliff House... a real treat. Service was excellent and food outstanding ! Thank you for making it such a great experience. We'll be back !
thank you. Your kind words encourage us to do better. regards
The viewoverlooking the Clumbia Gorge is stunning, even at night. And the ambiance is nice.
But the food at this "faded glory" establishment was just awful. Supposedly wild salmon was obviously farm raised, the color alone was a dead giveaway, and the lack of flavor was the final straw. This is the Pacific Northwest, don't try to fool us.
The NY steak was gristly, thin, and of very poor quality. Angus? Maybe from a farm owned by some surly Scot named Angus. Sauce on it was garlicy and just yucky.
The waiter was nice enough, but he stilled clam juice all over the table.
We ordered a Drambouie in a hot snifter after dinner, and got one in low ball glass that wasn't even warmed. You mean no one in the whole place knew what this was? Maybe not the most common thing, but not unheard of either. But at least they didn't charge us.
When in Hood River area, avoid it like the plague.
Always a pleasure to dine here . Certainly recommended .
thank you kindly.
The building is an amazing historic site with beautiful views of the river. The server was friendly. The food was nothing special. For a place to have such a small menu, one would think the food would be amazing but that was not the case. We had the Onion soup and it was very salty. The steak dinner wasn’t any Special either.
I came here for an anniversary dinner and was looking forward to a very nice dinner. The best thing about this place was the view. I really couldn’t recommend this place for a meal.
Our waiter was exceptional!! My steak was perfect!! It melted in your mouth! I even ate every bite of my garlic mashed potatoes. That is how good everything was. An Awesome 30th Anniversary experience!
thank you. please don't wait another 30 to visit us gain. best
Great service and staff was outstanding. They ran out of Huckleberry though bummer but everything was great
Amazing views! Great service and the food was absolutely amazing! Will make this a stop every time I come to town!
thank you. looking forward to your next visit.
Our waiter was great. The food was good. I had the Tenderloin which was tender but not exceptional. My fellow had the Seafood pasta and he liked it. The Ceaser salad was big enough to split and had croutons that had no flavor or crunch.
We won't go back for dinner again.
glad you came and enjoyed the food. We hope to see you back.
Excellent Spacing of tables for social distancing and very careful and respectful waitstaff (and customers).
Food was terrific.
View is great.
We were there on a Weekday and stayed at the Hotel. So it was not crowded.
thank you Jon. We hope to see you again.
Our server was very professional and accommodating. Our meal was sadly not so good. My fish was past its use-by date, not only not eatable but horrible to even look at. I was simply appalled. But my poor server scrambled to save the night and the replacement meal came very quickly. We shared a piece of chocolate cake which also was too old, but even old ganache tastes pretty good. I’m sure it’s excellent when it’s fresh. We were there on a Tuesday night. Go on a weekend and you’ll probably have better luck.
Hi Loretta, I'm sorry about your "not so good" experience. We hope to see you again.
This a place l always stop at on my way to the coast. This place is too good to pass by.
Four of us enjoyed a wonderful birthday dinner for my wife. Unfortunately this was during the forest fire smoke problem, so even seeing the river was impossible. The food and wine were excellent, however. The Columbia Gorge Villas next door also allowed me to charge my Tesla while we were dining. Very kind of them.
glad you had a pleasant time under the circumstances. hope to see you again.
Our reservation was cancelled for a different restaurant in the area because of the smoke, and Simon’s Cliff House was able to accommodate us as a last minute reservation. The drinks were great, the food incredible, the service imprecisely, and the ambience was perfect. Thank you for making our night special despite the thick smoke.
Everything was good about the restaurant, but the smoke was so bad we couldn't see the river.
promise no fires next time you come November thru May. kind regards
Great for a nice, but chill vacation/event dinner.
We made reservations but it did not seem like anything was set up for us before we got there. Service was slow and not very attentive, although the servers were polite. Food was good. I visited this restaurant many years ago, and it is no where near the quality if was then.
The food here is definitely not worth the price. We got better quality and tasting food at every other restaurant/winery we went to in Hood River. We were definitely disappointed in the food. The server was great and he was very attentive to our needs, but seeing as how we were in a pretty top notch hotel I would have assumed the food to be as well, but it wasn’t. Under-seasoned filet and NY Steak and the mashed potatoes tasted instant. We were definitely bummed out by the food.
Everything was excellent... food, staff, surroundings, and view of the Columbia Gorge/ River. My Wife & I were celebrating our 50th anniversary and it was all very special with dinner and then breakfast at Simon's Cliff House. 5 Stars!
Service was excellent. Manager took care of us and his timing was impeccable! We took his menu suggestions and they were perfect. It was an anniversary night for us and the atmosphere of the hotel greatly enhanced the evening
The Cliff House was wonderful. Definitely made for a great last night dinner in Hood River. Would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a special place to dine.
Beautiful views. Would be nice for a special occasion. Food was fantastic and the service impeccable.
This was our first time at Simon's and it was fantast! We had tried to get here several times before but things hadn't worked out with it being a couple of hours away.
The service was excellent, the waiter had an outstanding personality and was very helpful. We had a shrimp ordoruve and mixed drinks followed by Salmon and steak dinners. For dessert we had the double chocolate cake all of which were equally outstanding.
Before leaving we set up a reservation for the end of September on my birthday. I am looking forward to coming back.
Not great food, especially for the price. Make sure y ou y sit by the windows, as you are paying for the view.
The historic Columbia River Gorge Hotel is a wonderful place to lodge and to dine. My wife and I consider it to be a special occasion every time we do either, although we now have a home just across the River from the hotel so rarely have occasion any longer to lodge there.
A must stop in this area, along with Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, for those who like history, atmosphere, and charm to accompany their overnight stay or dinner for two.
Our server was superb in every way.. the menu changed a little since I last visited so Gabriel was able to exquisitely describe any dish I asked about!
I enjoyed munching on the Steamed mussels and clam while waiting on my main course tender lamb chops.
