Casual alternative to the classic setting of Lowrys. If you ask, you have access to the full range of prime rib offerings from the Lowrys menu.
Delicious food, great service at lunch time. The prime rib sandwich melts in your mouth, so tender and juicy! Scott, our waiter was funny and attentive! Nice ambiance!
great atmosphere. selection of plates and sandwiches were just right
Awesome service. Awesome food. Limited selection but what we had was great. Very cozy and intimate. Felt like a private club.
The salad I ordered was missing tomatoes, and although I asked for cheddar cheese instead of blue cheese, she brought me a blue cheese dressing. Made no sense to me. Bread or rolls are not served. Crème brulee was delightful.
Had the beef ribs and they were great!
Sting in food
Excellent experience - not a single bad item on the menu. Everything was on point. Definitely looking forward to going back again!
This was my second time here and this time I had the cheeseburger which was excellent. The last time I came here I tried the chili which was very good too. The menu has a lot of choices but my girlfriend and her daughter followed my lead of having the cheeseburger and they loved it. Enjoyed happy hour pricing for wine as well! Nice atmosphere and close to downtown hotels and shops.
Food was excellent. Our server was awesome. The place had a cool/old school vibe. Will definitely be going back.
Favorite lunch but we aware for 2 people you will spend about $100
Very cozy and comfortable -- will definitely be back for the prime rib sandwich.
The Prime Rib was surprisingly not very thick
Great food at fair prices. Nice way to experience multiple small plates at a place that handles meat very well. Very charming old school bar area.
Great food, however, you have to know where you are going because it's actually the side entrance to Lawry's so we had to call because address was not matching up. Otherwise was very pleased.
Pastrami was outstanding!
Crab cake was good, not great.
The octopus was a little chewy depending on the pieces. Drinks are done well... you get what you pay for.
As for the staff, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. And for a taste of old school Chicago ambiance this place is it! Gorgeous.
The wedge salad and steak were great but the Mac and cheese was amazing! Set up was nice being able to see the food being prepared. Nice place
We have been dining at Side Door since it opened and the quality/selections have declined considerably. Several menu staples are gone--deviled eggs, knife and fork pastrami ..... It would be nice it there were consistent regular menu items and a few specials. Online menu is inaccurate.
Last visit I ordered the gnocchi with sausage and mushrooms. For $14, there were probably 10 gnocchis and the meat was undercooked and red--sent back. (At many Chicago restaurants $14 will get you a good sized portion of pasta!) Tomato bisque was more like gazpacho. My husband's beef was lukewarm.
The restaurant was not crowded but it took 30 minutes to get our orders.
The space is small and it was annoying to have carolers intruding.
Chicago has so many great restaurants, it's a waste of your time to visit Side Door.
Always a great place and good value. Food always satisfies
The SideDoor is owned by Lawrys, has Lawrys high expectation for food and service, but has more pub food. Of course it is pub food if it was made by a world class chef.
Even then the simplest sandwhich, a prime rib sandwhich that you may think you have had in a hundred places will blow your mind. The cut is fabulous, the taste and tenderness is incredible, the meat to bun ratio is 2 to 1 and that is perfect in my mind.
We placed a basic order for simple appetizers (salad and cheese spread) and entrees and a side dish. After half an hour, a kitchen runner comes out with my entree (and nothing else). I inform her that we still haven't even received our appetizers yet so I'm not ready for my entree and I send it back. A while later our appetizers finally arrive. Seconds later, we haven't even taken the first bite of the appetizers and the runners appear with our entrees again. I inform them that we JUST just received our appetizers and we are NOT ready for the entrees yet. We have a tiny table so there isn't room for our entree dishes with our appetizer dishes. They take the entrees back again. Our waiter comes by and apologizes and says he'll make sure that we get our entrees at the appropriate time. I commented to my husband that I wonder if they are just going to have our entrees sit under a heat lamp until it's time to serve them. We rush to eat the appetizers, and when we are finished our waiter tells us that he was being ordered to bring our original plates to us (that have been sitting around) but that he refused and he put in a fresh order for us. After a while our new entrees are brought out to us, but no side dish. I ask about the side dish and I'm told that they forgot to place the order for it and they offered to make it and pack it up for me to take home. No, I wanted the side dish to eat with my meal, not to eat at a later meal. (??) So I eat about half of my entree while waiting for the side dish, and then I sit and wait ANOTHER half hour for the side dish to finally arrive while the other half of my entree got cold. In the time it took for us to get our 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 1 side dish we watched a table of 8 people arrive after we had placed our order, get their appetizers, get their entire meals, pay their check, and leave before we finished getting all of our original food. The food tasted great, but I'll never go back.
Our Annual Christmas dinner!
Always an excellent choice especially during the holiday season, just love the ambiance and the food is always delicious.
Our lunch at the SideDoor was wonderful! From the atmosphere, to the staff and the food everything was exceptional. We completely enjoyed our meal!
It took 10 minutes for the server to bring us our drinks. The wedge salad had no dressing and when the server brought more it was runny. I also noticed many fruit flys.
Some items were exceptional (crispy octopus), but I can't get over the stale chips. If you're going to serve homemade chips with every sandwich at an up-scale gastro pub, they better be fresh. I saw them digging them out of giant pre-made bins, and they tasted 2-days old (I'm sure they weren't, but they may as well have been). The fried brussels sprouts were also far too oily and just this side of inedible. (I've had deep fried brussels sprouts properly prepared elswhere.)
Add that to the very unappealing lighting for those seated near the kitchen, and you end up with a bit of an underwhelming experience.
Great food & service. Difficult talking due to noise but intend to come back, maybe during lunch.
Service was great! They were out of a number of red wines, which was unfortunate, but the food was great. Ribs were massive, and the Buffalo Cauliflower appetizer was great!
It was a horrible experience! Our waitress left right after she screwed up our drinks, food wasn’t good, manager kept apologizing but kept messing up anyway. We will never go there again!
Thanks for another great Lunch. Prime Rib sandwich and burger to die for. Carlos made it perfect.
Restaurant had a few tables (not busy) for our 1:30 lunch yet it took over 1 hour to get one appetizer and it was cold. Had to ask twice for a status on our prime rib sandwiches and was told the kitchen was backed up only to be served lukewarm sandwiches. With no noticeable crowd, it was hard to figure out why the kitchen was backed up and, even if it was, why our food sat out for as long as it did before being brought to us given our polite but increasingly unhappy table. Our lunch took 2 hours because it took us 1.5 hours to get served. Disappointing.
The best French dip sandwich in the city! The prime rib is melt-in-your-mouth good and the perfectly textured french roll is a perfect compliment to the wonderful meat. Have a "Tourist Trap" cocktail...it's amazing!
Terrific spot for "tapas" with friends. Also, the fried chicken sandwich is OUTSTANDING.
I was disaapointed. I assumed the food would be really good since the restaurant presumably shares the kitchen with Lawry's. I had the gnocci with pork shoulder. It was not very good. Gnocci are generally expected to be firm, but these were mushy. The "pork shoulder" was little chuncks of relatively flavorless ham. An indistiguishable whitish clear sauce of some sort covered it all. It just was not very appetizing. My Wedge Salad was ok, but really did not have much blue cheese dressing, so I ended up with a lot of uneaten iceberg lettuce. My friend had the prime rib sandwich, which she said was all right. She also had the creamed corn, which was a nice take on the old standard. It turned out to be the best dish of the meal.
The odd thing was that when we sat down, the music was pretty quiet and unobtrusive, but slowly got louder and louder, as though the crew thought everyone had cleared out and they were cranking the music while they cleaned up. We finally had to ask our server to to have them turn down the volume, and she agreed it had gotten very loud.
The decor is nice, clubby and traditional like Lawry's, butI don't know if I will try it a second time.
SideDoor is one of my favorite spots. Food and ambiance are wonderful. Very friendly service. Highly recommend!
The food was wonderful! Prime rib was on point, and can’t beat the mashed potatoes and delicious gravy! My only disappointment was we never got our Yorkshire puddings. They were supposed to come with our prime rib meal, but our waiter was a little slow and overwhelmed so we just gave up and asked for the check. However, will definitely go back or try one of their other locations anytime!
The food was good and loved the ambiance. However, it took about 15 minutes to get all the entrees out. Some of us were done eating while others had yet to get their food. Some meals were forgotten and never received. One person got their side and about 15 minutes later got their hamburger. I will go back because food was good and hope they can get this part figured out.
Very slow food prep. I watched my burger sit on their counter for 15 minutes while my husbands food was being made. I complained when it was delivered stone cold and they remade it...as a result, the two of us ate our meals separately. The burger itself was horrible and I’d have had a better one at McDonalds. Not what I was expecting from this restaurant. We’re local and had planned come again. They did comp my meal but we won’t be back.
I have been here many times and always had really good food and decent service, but this last visit was a doozy.
