Turned up for a quick bite before the Athletics World Championships as knew that Westfield would be rammed and we had a great deal. It's quirky and interesting and a nice position. Staff were pretty good and Shane was on hand to greet us. There were three of us, myself and my brother had a pint of craft beer and my daughter had a mocktail. We tucked into some Guinness bread with salted butter which was delicious. Two us had the deer steak and my daughter had a sirloin steak. The meat, sauces and sides were delicious. Already, very good value at about £15 for a main course we were blown away to find that everything was half price as we had dined between 5 and 6pm. Total bill including service was under £40!! Even without this discount, i would highly recommend this place for a laid back lunch or dinner and I am actually going back tomorrow as i have more tickets for the Athletics!

Very good location, especially convenient for the Olympic stadium. Service was good, food was interesting with a good kids menu. Nice location beside the canal particularly if the weather is good

We found Shane's to be ok without blowing us away. Rabbit burgers were quite nice but could have been warmer. Burgers went down well and buttermilk chicken brunch was nice but a small portion. Lemon posset was a nice dessert and cheese board was also enjoyed. Mocktails and beer were ok. Service was friendly but we weren't impressed with the watered down soap or that hand towels ran out in the toilets. It's quite nice for casual dining.

Really lovely food, with fresh interesting ingredients. Attentive and friendly service and a good atmoshpere. Definitely one to return to.

One of the best meals for a long time. Veal beautifully cooked. The wine was amazing and we probably ordered too much of it! Shane the owner was friendly and made sure everything was perfect but in a NZ fun and informal manner. Will def be back!

Pot shot: Shane's has been around the Hackney casual gourmet scene for a few years now, with a successful place on Chatsworth Road, so it was a pleasant surprise to find he's moved into Near East, part of the former Olympic park. For me it really is near east as it's about a 10 minute walk across Manley Green, and I can wave to my sister who lives on the opposite bank of the Lee Navigation. The atmosphere is young and exuberant without being screechy and there are pleasant, well-informed staff who genuinely try. Food wise, it builds on Shane's themes from his Clapton joint - locally sourced and wild or foraged wherever possible. So there are warnings to watch out for possible shot still in your pigeon or venison. My fallow deer was beautiful - succulent and moist and flavourful. My companion's rabbit was apparently superb. Starters of whipped goat's cheese and pigeon were tiny but lovely. Cap that off with a well thought through cheeseboard and some calvados and we were in middle class foodie heaven. My criticism would be only that portions are on the small side so you may be wise to order extras and sides. As Here East is a bit far from stations your best bet is to cab it if you're coming in from Stratford. A pay day treat perhaps but well worth it.
