Saint James Seafood Restaurant and Raw Bar
Food was great as was service. Too much sun in one's eyes. They need too do something about that.
I would give it another try; they were very busy during our visit and our waitress had too many tables to serve at once. Also, the cocktails are serviced in tiny glasses and were all overflowing and messy. Bar should switch to taller glasses. At a restaurant of this price range, I would expect some sort of bread to be brought with the beverages.
A gem in Brightleaf. A vast menu of wonderful options, and everything we tried was well executed and delicious. I'm not a big tiki-drink afficionado, but they've got a solid wine and beer list as well. Great for a special occasion or last minute treat.
My wife and I have dined here several times and have consistently had a great experience. My recommendation is to try anything they have on special. I do every time and it is always something fresh (expected) and innovative. Case in point: my most recent main was seared scallops on a polenta wedge surrounded by a moat of delicious Brunswick stew. That would have been a solid dish, but they topped it with blanched collards and whole peanuts! The texture and flavor were amazing! My wife always gets the fish stew, and it is always superb. We paired our meal with a Didier Dagueneau Pouilly-Fume - worth finding if you haven't tried it. After Nana's closed, this has become our go-to restaurant when we want something special.
Very family friendly and the food in incredible, always.
Food was good but nothing outstanding- chowder had more bacon flavor than anything else; lobster newberg was especially sweet; no children's menu; difficult time getting our tea refilled; soda was in mini-bottle so no possibility of reasonable refill; the fries on the appetizer menu were quite delicious; staff was very friendly though
This has quickly become my favorite seafood restaurant in the area. A great mix of traditional Calabash fried offerings and more upscale takes on traditional dishes. A great option for dinner before a DPAC show.
Excellent food, atmosphere, service. A little pricey but worth it for what you get.
Went here for my husband's birthday. He is a great seafood lover and this restaurant did not disappoint. I had read some reviews saying that it was pricey, but for what you get, it was definitely worth it. Our server, Omar, was excellent. We will return.
Extremely yummy! Everything was delicious, unique and flavorful. Can’t wait to go back!
Food was delicious. Hostess recommended a ceviche and she was spot on! Everything we ordered was
delicious. Amber, our server, was great as well. Lovely experience. Will definitely return.
St. James is a superb restaurant with excellent food. Our server Josh was very friendly and helpful. I am gluten intolerant and he steered me away from the Gumbo. We both had the sea bass at Josh's recommendation and it was excellent with a superb sauce and the fish was cooked to perfection. The dessert custard was also very tasty, and gluten free. It's not a cheap place to eat, though, but at St. James you get what you pay for. Highly recommended.
Excellent food and service. Wish it was a little bit bigger size wise, but not their fault.
We had mixed experience with the quality of our meals. The lobster roll was delicious, as was the NC Shrimp and Geechee Grits entree. The mixed Calabash (2 item) was a little light on the fish and shrimp and the fries, although well-seasoned, were very soggy. Service started out fine but wanted as the evening went on. Entrees were slow in coming out and service was not very attentive. We were disappointed in our first visit to the restaurant.
The seafood stew and the sea scallop entrees were the stars of the evening.
Great seafood in a convenient location
The food is great, and the space is very cool – highly recommend!
Our meal was absolutely delicious. Amazing oysters, best veggie sides I have ever had and all the entrees were top notch. Brought my parents and the exclaimed it was the best meal they had in years. We also had an attentive and very knowledgeable server.
The food was excellent as well as the drink and food recommendations from our server was spot on.
The only complaint would be is the tables were very close together. This doesn't make for a romantic date!!
Birthday. First time there and we will definitely return
Great food, quality preparation and presentation
We love this place. Everything was perfect except for the dessert. My husband picked a doughnut dessert. It was the worst dessert any of us had ever had. It was dry and tasted like stale bread with liquor poured on it. The service, food, and drinks were spectacular, otherwise. We will be back soon but will not be ordering that dessert.
I am from New England and this place was AMAZING! Seriously a must for anyone visiting or living in Durham! Just go, you won’t regret it!
Superior oysters. Shrimp and grits were yummy as well. Excellent wine and cocktail list.
Always great service and great food!
The food at Saint James is excellent. I highly recommend the seafood tower, definitely worth the splurge! I can’t believe they turned the wonderful dive Fishmongers into this beautifully decorated, fantastically updated, delicious restaurant. Definitely don’t miss this place if you like seafood!
So good! The food was amazing and the service was absolutely excellent. We will definitely be back.
Awesome service and awesome food! Well be back soon.
Amazing as always. The squid in shells with octopus were particularly delicious.
Our meal was delicious, our waitress was outstanding, overall a fantastic experience. We were upstairs and the toilets are very small and the seats are two small top. They’re a little too tall for my short legs, So the backs of my legs were hurting after we been there for an hour and a half. Also started to get very loud as the room was full when we left. I would not recommend this to someone with any sort of hearing impairment, and the entire upstairs is not very accessible to anyone with a mobility limitation. But the food was unique and delicious, unlike anything else in town. And our waitress was maybe the best I’ve ever had.
Mike and I and our friends all had a delightful time at St. James Restaurant. The service, food, and accommodations were excellent. We will be back. Thank you, Carolyn Brooks
Service was prompt and impeccable. The Old Bay fries satisfied this born and raised Marylander (though with a dash of vinegar I would have truly felt like I was downee shore, hon) and the Sea Scallops over Brunswick Stew and Grits Cakes were a huge hit. I look forward to returning and trying even more of their menu!
Food was very fresh tasting and well prepared. Service was incredible. Highly recommended.
Food and service was excellent we will definitely go back.
The food was delicious and the service was great. My husband said this is his new favorite Durham seafood spot! We will definitely come again.
Really liked the way they changed the inside of the restaurant from fishmongers. Very interesting menu choices. Entrees are pretty pricy for Durham. Wife had the shrimp and grits which was excellent. I had calabash catfish which was good but nothing amazing. Dessert was awesome, gumbo too. Sat upstairs as a 2 top and it was delightful.
I have wanted to try this restaurant since it opened. I booked it for my birthday. My husband had a serious fall and was in the hospital but My son was here and we were able to keep the reservation. Unfortunately, my son became very ill (he had spent time with my grandchildren who now have the flu...as, apparently so does he.). We only had two appetizers before he needed to leave but MY OH MY were they exquisite. We had the oyster salad and then the clam chowder. I am a bit of a fanatic regarding both fried oysters and clam chowder. Without a doubt, the best oysters and the best clam chowder I have ever had. My son agreed. We have vowed to return before my next birthday. The transformation is amazing. The ambiance was wonderful. The best dining experience I have had in a long time...except for the sick son!
We loved it. It's such a cool place.. the vibe, the food, all of it was amazing.
We had an absolutely WONDERFUL TIME!!! The food was INCREDIBLE!!! We have already recommended it to several other couples. Our waitress Hailey was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Very professional, attentive to our needs and super on the ball. This was our first time but will not be the last!!! Can't wait to come back and dine with you again!! Thank you!!
