About this restaurant

Tucked just off Coast Highway within the tony seaside enclave known as Newport Coast, Sage on the Coast is an understated jewel of contemporary refinement, with a dining room swathed in a single shade of soft sage green, a bar area that reflects the setting sun in mirrored shelves and the restaurant’s signature — and transporting — “Patio for all Seasons”, complete with retractable awning, fireplace and herb garden. But, don’t equate the glamorous décor with formality. Guests are welcome to have a casual light meal in the dining room or drinks and snacks at the bar. Chef Richard Mead creates an ever-changing, seasonal menu that boasts a wide-range of quality, in-demand ingredients hand picked by him personally at the Santa Monica Farmer's market. Mead is fond of saying that his ingredients stand up for themselves, locally sourced as they are from farmers who, after so many years, have become his friends.

    The food and the Ambiance were great. We requested a table on the patio near the fireplace and we got a table right in front of the fireplace. We were celebrating a birthday and the evening was very relaxing with a nice leisurly dinner. However, the waiter was not very friendly and did not seem to enjoy his job. He gave us adequate service but not with a very friendly attitude.

    We truly love Sage but when the service is bad it can truly impact the evening...we pored our own wine all evening, never got the wine chiller we requested and after three requests for more water, my husband finally got up and took the pitcher from the service are !

    The Restaurant has enclosed patio seating. We were seated near the edge of the enclosure and it was quite chilly. Biggest problem on this visit was poor service. It was half hearted most of the meal; but as we were finishing, our first server apparently left the restaurant. His replacement neglected to tell us or attend to us in any way. One member of our party had to go through the restaurant in to the bar to find someone to bring us our bill. This was a Wednesday night, and not particularly busy, so this makes the poor service even worse.

    Food is close to very good. We went for restaurant week and I chose the herb crusted chicken which was a bit dry and could use more flavor. The other dishes I had were very good though. My wife liked her scallops as well so I'd rate the food 3 1/2 stars.

    Enticed by the OC restaurant week, the prefixe menu at Sage was wonderful; paired it with a mellow blended Spanish wine,the dreary weather was hardly noticeable. I chose the ahi spring rolls, salmon salad and flourless cake, friends in our party ordered the gorgonzola salad, herb chicken and fruit tart. Each and every dish was a culinary delight. I highly recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere, service and delicious food.

    There was not enough lettuce in the salad. It was the smallest piece of fish I have ever been served. The waiter forgot to bring our side dishes. Not a restaurant that I would go back to, although it is close to home, or recommend to friends. At the end of the meal, we were charged for the appetizer we never received also but we caught it on the bill.

    We went for lunch during OC Restaurant Week. Hardly anything on OC's website was on the menu for Restaurant Week at our table. Very odd. Manager couldn't or wouldn't explain why this happened.

    Ambiance was special and great but Food was just OK. I ordered from OC restaurant week menu and then realized the food portion was much smaller comparing to regular menu. Also Quality wasn't that great. Pizza was burned. Coffee tasted horrible.
