Great ambiance and very good vibe. Tried to have dinner on the rooftop but it was full, plus they only serve tapas on the roof. But next time we’d like to try it. Instead we ate in on the first floor but since it’s an open air restaurant it was wide open to the gas lamp district scene. The food was great, especially the meatball appetizer. The hostess was extremely helpful and friendly, as were the wait staff. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely return.
Went for brunch. It was great! Live music was nice too.
I had been to Rustic Root before for drinks and apps and the food wasn't that good. I'm glad I went back to try brunch though, it was much better this time. Only con was they didn't have non-dairy options (ie almond or soy milk) for coffee. Was surprised by that since we are in California.
Would definitely go back for brunch.
Excellent food and great service.
Food was too fussy and complicated. Service was good, but mechanical.
Porter house steak was amazing! The presentation was incredible. Mac n Cheese was so good. First time there. A little pricy but good food, service, and ambiance.
We were greeted right away and the hostess accommodated our seating request as best as she could making our family occasion an even more happier one. Food was delicious, creative and served at right temparatures and at the right intervals. I was very happy to have chosen Rustic Root.
Our team came here after an event. We started with cocktails on the rooftop bar - great cocktails but it was pretty loud so hard to hear/converse. We had reservations downstairs for dinner, which was more mellow and conducive to talking. Everyone loved their food - we had the lobster parpadelle (great flavor and good portion), steak + frites, scallops, rabbit, salmon, and grains salad. Will definitely come here again!
came here with a few friends for my birthday and it was so incredible! the food, the champagne platter, everything was SO great
It was a great way to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday! Amazing food and drinks❤️
Great time as always at Rustic Root
We had a reservation at 8:15pm and didn’t get seated until 9:00. The Food and atmosphere was great but we needed up spending more $$ on drinks because of the wait.
Excellent food and table service. However, the hostess was very incompetent. We had a reservation for 1:15, arrived early about 12:50. When we approached the hostess stand we were greeted appropriately and were told we might be sat early if there was an open table. We all have many years of experience in the restaurant industry so we understood having to wait until 1:15 if there were no open tables. We decided to wait by the bar until our table was ready, after waiting about ten minutes we saw multiple open tables that could easily seat 5 people. When we approached the hostess again she asked us again who we were and if we had a reservation, once again we informed her of our reservation and she told us it would be about 5 more minutes, people proceeded to walk in and were sat immediately, we approached the hostess again and she asked if we had been helped yet and what our name was.... again.... for the third time.... when we were finally seated it was at a table that had been open since we had arrived... seriously debated leaving after the lack of competence when we arrived given that the start of our experience was so poor. Glad we stayed though, our server was great and the food was amazing!
My boyfriend and I took my mom here for her birthday and she loved it!! He got the braised rabbit (he liked it but he eats bigger portions so he was hungry still lol). My mom and I shared the 16 oz tomahawk steak and it was amzingggg!!! I don't remember our servers name but she was great and super sweet!
Loved the vibe and LOVED the menu. I will come back as the service, food, and atmosphere exceeded our expectations.
I ordered the Steak frites and it was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Was like cutting through butter with a warm knife. Service was truly outstanding. Very attentive waiter and staff. Manager even stopped by to see how everything was going. I wished I lived in the San Diego area just to make this restaurant a weekly stop. Great for business, date night or hanging with friends to have a great meal. Best place I went to while in San Diego for business. Thanks to all the staff there
There was a snafu at the hostess stand. I checked-in early for the reservation and asked them to let the rest of the party know we were at the bar. That message was never passed on and I found my guest waiting in the drizzle outside, unaware that we'd arrived.
I checked in again (since the first time didn't "go through"??) and she confirmed a reservation for 7. I said, no, it's just for 6. She said the "computer says 7, but this is no problem." I made the reservation for 6 via the Open Table app and had it confirmed via text an hour before the reservation (for 6). Not sure where 7 came into play. Not a big deal, just an odd inconsistency.
food was amazing, I recommend their eggs Benedict & hash browns! service was kinda slow but I know it was because it was busy. It’s also kind of loud inside when it’s full but overall really great!
In addition to an eclectic menu there was live music on a Monday evening. This particular evening we were told that a bottle of wine was 50% off. Our waitress, Carly, was excellent.
Great Date night spot! Awesome ambiance, would recommend for any rooftop outings in the Gaslamp!
The food was amazing. Had the tomahawk steak. Best potatoes and Mac n cheese I’ve had in a long time
It was great food, service and very nice ambiance
Overall, a very underwhelming experience. Our appetizers were small in size for the price. While the meatballs were flavorful, the chorizo stuffed peppers were cold and bland. Most of us ordered the salmon. It was average at best. The service was spotty. Especially when we were looking for silverware ( they removed after appetizers ). To keep our entree’s from getting cold I finally took some from an adjoining unoccupied table. We can cross this place off our list of restaurants we would revisit.
I had heard mixed reviews, but have been wanting to try Rustic Root. Service was top notch and food was amazing. I had the special Chilean Sea Bass which was highly recommended by our server. My date had scallops. This dishes exceeded all expectations. We will be back. The ambiance was unique but perfect. Rustic Root is a must try.
Great food and service! Will definitely go back
Valentine’s Day dinner, it was nice to have the option between the regular menu and Pre fix. Food was excellent and drinks amazing!
The environment and look of the restaurant was unique and inviting. I loved the interior decor but the service was just average. I went based off a recommendation & the positive reviews. However, it wasn’t an experience where I could say the service stood out to me enough to want to come back. This was my first time ever coming in to dine here with my fiancé and we both loved the food. The cocktails were also very good and we loved the wine list. Our server took extremely long to follow up with us and I had ordered a second glass of wine and he took extremely long to bring that second glass. We had already had our plates picked up and finished our meals and still had no sign of our server or my second glass of wine. For the price and the reviews given I just expected more out of our service. Overall there were positives and negatives, so I’m 50/50 about it.
Everything was fine. I ate the deer. It honestly tasted like my mom's pot roast so I was pretty bored. I'm a cheap date though so it's probably just me. I'd rather have a double cheeseburger and some good fries. My girlfriend seemed to like the shrimp pasta. Nice restaurant for a date.
A bit too noisy. Food okay. Interesting menu. Server quite nice. Too expensive for what it is
stumbled on this place almost by accident....had been looking for slightly different menu choices and a decent bar list...and we scored a bullseye. I had the rabbit (excellent) and my colleague had the Wild Boar Bolognese (almost excellent)... great bottle of wine (@ 1/2 price); great service from the wait staff. so no prob recommending this establishment. upstairs is a rooftop bar which is almost pretty cool and looked to be a hip hangout for locals and tourists alike (we were on 5th ave after all)
Really cool vibe - lovely atmosphere and would suit a date or a group of friends. Great find
First time to Rustic Root and was very impressed. The fish special was awesome as were the other meals people with us had. Reasonably priced drinks, delicious fresh food. Would highly recommend and we will definitely be back! The only drawback would be parking can be challenging in the Gas Lamp but it was worth hunting for a parking space on a busy Saturday!
The table service was atrocious. Baffling, given all the other good things about this place. We were seated for 30 minutes, literally, with no server coming by at all to take our order. Finally we flagged down another server who took our order, and when our original waiter came back with the food there was no acknowledgement or apology.
The food was great. I had chilaquiles, which was delicious. The coffee was very good. Decor is great. We sat downstairs to have the full menu, since the rooftop menu is limited.
The hostess who seated us was very nice and gracious.
Great food .went for Sunday brunch and the French toast we soooo good !!
It was your average downtown restaurant with its own twist on its own food.
Great place with unique food.
it was so fresh and good. You could taste the tomatoes and bread and everything was so amazing. I was there by myself but with the great live music and the helpful staff - it was a brunch that I'll never forget
Restaurant week was amazing! Will definitely have to come back to try other items on their menu
We had a great experience with the service and meal. Each dish was amazing and we savored every bite. The music was a little too loud so we had to shout our conversations but the food was well worth it!
Went for a birthday and the bonus was restaurant week menu. Food was excellent. The restaurant was very loud so conversation was difficult. 1 dessert came out before the other 3, and we waited over 20 minutes for the other 3 desserts. Server was polite, but it took too long for dessert and our check. Overall it was a nice evening, and a fun place for people watching.
Great all the way around, Food, drinks, service, ambiance. We went for restaurant week and was by far one of the best ones we have ever tried. Will definitely be back!
