My husband and I had a lovely dinner at Root 29. We both had burgers and both were amazingly fresh and delicious. While the food was good, the best part of Root 29 was the ambiance- the decor is very clean and inviting. The floor to ceiling windows give you a beautiful feel of being nestled in the treetops. We will certainly dine here again.

The three-course dinner for restaurant week was well prepared, tasty, and reasonably priced. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The only negative—and it was a very small one — was that there was no one to greet us at the entrance. A sign said to seat ourselves. Small matter, given the excellence of the dining experience, but I like to be welcomed and shown to a particular table, especially when I’ve made reservations.

Root29 had a promising menu and some very favorable reviews on their website. Despite some mixed thoughts from Yelp, my mother and I decided to give it a try. When we arrived, we were met with a “Please seat yourself” sign which I thought odd based on the menu pricing. My mom and I chose a side table. The restaurant itself is very open and elegant without being too stuffy. Our waiter was very kind but he seemed woefully understaffed. There were two other tables when we arrived and he was acting as bartender and completing inventory as well. As it was New Year’s Day, we wanted a Sri j. My mom went with a Pinot Grigio which she loved and I tried the Strawberry Basic Collins off of their “crafted cocktails” menu. Our waiter was unsure if he had fresh basil and went to the kitchen. He came back with a huge bunch and I appreciated the extra effort. I have a feeling he may have been a bit flustered about the basil that he forgot to put gin in my cocktail—it tasted like strawberry purée and nothing else. Let’s move on to food. We weren’t starving so we ordered some starters and sides. We had the slider and a side of French fries and their maple bacon Brussels sprouts. I’ll preface my comments with the food was fine. It wasn’t gross or undercooked or anything. It just wasn’t good. The sliders tasted like frozen burger patties. They were served on a ciabatta bun which created a woefully dry combination. The fries were fine, definitely frozen and in a small portion. The Brussels needed more crisping and had a slightly “burnt candle” taste. The two drinks with the appetizer and two sides clocked in at 34 dollars which I didn’t think was terrible. Charlottesville is blessed with so many wonderful restaurant. I don’t see this place competing.

Our experience was not great. The food was mediocre and most of it was cold. It was not worth the $40.00 buffet charge. We had a sandwich lunch buffet at Wintergreen Ski Resort that was better food. Very disappointed since it was our Christmas dinner. I would not recommend.

The food at our Christmas Dsy buffet was very good as were the desserts. Service was excellent. The remodeled area is very pleasing (and much needed) but not as cozy as the original. We will go back and recommend it to others.

The restaurant is decorated with a sophisticated and modern look. However, the food was subpar. I had the roasted pork sandwich and the pork was flavorless and dry. My husband had the hamburger sliders and the beef was dry. He also requested provolone cheese and was told the kitchen had some, but none was put on his burgers. The couple we were with did enjoy the pork chop and the tri tip steak. If we return, maybe we will order one of those items.

Kitchen didn’t seem equipped to provide items ordered on a prompt basis. Manager recognized the problem and was kind enough to discount the bill.
