Rockin Baja Lobster Old Town Ratings and Reviews
$2/$3 tacos on Tuesdays! Tried all the options (fish, ahi, carne asada, chicken) and loved them all. While waiting for the rest of our party we had chips and salsa from the unlimited nacho bar. Pineapple and mango salsa was my favorite but there were Also lots of others. Drinks were good, food was good, and service was good. We sat near the fountain inside and didn't realize that it was a partial inside-outside seating. We recommend that option since it feels a little more lively. Very cute entrance to the restaurant too.
We were looking for a Mexican restaurant with seafood and we found a great place. Rockin Baja exceeded our expectations. We got a table far enough from the band so we could talk. By the way, the band on this Saturday night was wonderful (they played our old favorites). The atmosphere was festive with great decor. The food-great lobster and shrimp-endless variety of tacos and burros. Being from Phoenix we know Mexican food. We will be back next time we get to San Diego.
The food was good but on the pricey side. Although there was quality ingredients I could easily get something with chicken or beef for much less. I understand their seafood can be pricey though and it might be more marketing to price their nonseafood items closer to their high end items. Overall I liked it and would go back and recommend it.
Our food was excellent...we had the original bucket. Our server was very attentive and checked on us numerous times. We were seated out on the patio, under an umbrella and right by the waterfall, so it was great! I would highly recommend this restaurant. We had lunch there before seeing a play at the Cygnet Theatre, just a few blocks away, as we always do and it works out well. And it was easy to make a reservation through Open Table.
Purchased 3 of the original Baja buckets; plenty of steamed and seasoned shrimp, grilled skirt steak, grilled chicken, grilled corn, lobster tails were the 4 inch tails - minimal amount. If you're going there for the lobster, you might reconsider. Food was prepared well, seasoned nicely; sides refried beans and lime rice, tortillas, and an awesome salsa bar and tortilla chips were plentiful.
Drink of the day- Long Island Ice Tea, was not prepared well, flat tasting and a lot of ice.
We sat on the patio near the waterfall, nice ambiance but a bit noisy. Service was accommodating and pleasant. Overall it was a good experienced and we would revisit and recommend to others.
My experience started off sour when we got to the hostess stand. The hostess was not customer friendly, I’ll just assume it was a busy day and she had a long shift. This was our first time at the restaurant, and with a reservation. The music was good, food was good but our waitress was slow. A lackluster experience at best...
Our group was celebrating / mourning the departure of a good colleague to a better position with the US Navy. The service was top notch and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Considering our party included 14 friends, the server and the kitchen did a very good job. I would organize another large group event here again.
It is a good quality and fun place in old town San Diego that serves Mexican food and was pretty crowded. I do not drink alcohol but the other guys said their margaritas were very tasty.
The only thing really missing was good live Mexican music, that would have made it a lot more fun
Neat little place in Old Town, clearly touristy and catering to it. Live music the few times we have been here. Nice little serve yourself chips and salsa bar. The buckets are kind of cool, a lot of food. The food is "fine" ... it is typical simple straight forward, the shrimp tacos were very good. But nothing special
My wife and I have dined in Old Town San Diego many times. One of our favorite spots has always been Old Town Mexican Café, but we decided to try something new. My wife is a lobster and crab lover, so we chose Rockin Baja. We had a couple of drinks, an appetizer and the bucket for two, containing two lobster tails, crab legs, steak, chicken, shrimp, corn, rice, beans and tortillas. It was very good! It could actually probably feed three people. The service was fair and the atmosphere was pleasant. We sat next to a small waterfall which made is even more inviting. I am sure we will go back and hopefully have the same bucket!
Went for birthday dinner on a Friday night. Service, ambiance, and the live band were amazing. We got the sombrero bucket for two and the food was pretty good. It was all flash fried so it made the crab legs difficult to get the meat out. And it all had the same taste. The drinks were excellent and the self serve chips and salsas were delicious too. Would definitely go back but probably skip the bucket and get tacos instead.
I liked that I was able to make a reservation for my work party of 15. They made it easy and had my table ready on arrival. The Buckets were delicious with meat, chicken, lobster, shrimp, corn and rice & beans on the side. The offer also came with their amazing fried ice cream. The office was talking about it for days. I highly recommend it.
Overall we had an okay experience, the food made up for our bad customer service experience. We originally had reservations for 8:45pm on a Sun, hostess called and asked if we could bump it up to 7:30pm because the kitchen closed at 9pm. We were more than accommodating as this changed our schedule for the evening and it was our ANNIVERSARY, we get there about 7:15pm they didn't ask for the name of the reservation, and sat us down. It was not busy, there were more empty tables than full and not too many large parties, our waiter had us waiting for over 30mins we were about to leave until another waiter stopped and asked us for our drink order and got our original waiter for us. SO we let that slide even though it was our anniversary and we let our waiter know, she only apologized but did not offer our drinks for free or any type of accommodation for being kept waiting on our anniversary. Then she tried being overly nice to try and make up for her tip, which she still got a 15% tip. I feel like the waitress should have been more accommodating as it was our anniversary, they changed our reservation time. I was excited to eat there but will not recommend to friends or family. Next time we are in San Diego we may not stop by. I wish I could remember the waitress name. Just not happy that I wasted my anniversary there and we live in AZ ugh.
This is a great restaurant. Make sure that you just take your seat and don't try to start out in the bar. You will have a totally different experience if you start in the bar. This is the second time in two months that we have had horrible service in the bar area. The restaurant itself has incredibly good food and service.
Been coming here for many years. Booked a reservation to bring my husband and kids for mine and my husbands birthday. This place has gone down hill...the service was absolutely HORRIBLE. I mean we to ask for everything including utensils, drinks, check, crackers for the crab legs. Our waitress only came back at the end to ask if we wanted dessert and left some dirty plates . In a last minute ditch effort to redeem a tip, I am assuming. There was another waitress that was helpful, it was not even her section and she tried to help. I appreciated her, as she tried to accomdate the fact that for a $200 meal for 4 people felt more like I was at a buffet at Hometown Buffet. Really turned me off . So sad as I used to love this place. Worst experience I have had in many years .
We went here during the heat wave in San Diego so it was pretty miserable feeling throughout most of the entire restaurant. The food, as usual, was absolutely fantastic! We were a bit disappointed, however, that the happy hour menu was supposed to only be in the bar. We looked prior to ordering and the happy hour menu didn't say anything like that AND the "bar" was only 7 feet from us. That's always very disappointing when businesses do that. When we're ordering a full meal, what does it matter to you that I get a few bucks off my drink?
