Specialising in the long-standing tradition of Japanese charcoal cooking.

Head Chef Charles Lee has worked in a number of Michelin starred restaurants during his career before arriving at ROBATA. Possessing a strong command of Asian cuisines from across the globe, Chef Lee has devised a menu which shows the diversity of the country’s food, highlighting traditional cooking techniques and contemporary flavours, along with using the best of British produce.

ROBATA meaning ‘fireside’ specialises in robata grilled charcoal cooking, a Japanese tradition that was first introduced by ancient fishermen who took boxes of hot coals with them on their boats to warm their food at they gathered their day’s catch. While the cooking method has largely stayed the same, the menu is a modern interpretation of some of Japan’s most prized dishes as well as a number of ROBATA signatures sure to please Western pal

Beautiful looking food, packed with delicious flavour and varied textures. Staff were friendly and service was super efficient. We were there for lunch on a heatwave Sunday so it was quiet as well as blissfully cool inside. Don’t miss the large plates of iberico pluma and the phenomenal miso aubergine which even had the aubergine refusenik coming back for more. We hadn’t been for a long while but standards were as high as ever. Highly recommended.

Robata is hands down one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a sleek yet comfortable vibe that sets the tone for a great dining experience. The food was exceptional. Every dish—from the perfectly grilled skewers to the fresh, beautifully presented sushi—was packed with flavor and clearly prepared with the utmost care and skill. The ingredients were top-notch, and you could really taste the quality in every bite. The robata-grilled items, in particular, were a standout—smoky, tender, and bursting with umami. Service was equally impressive. The staff were attentive, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. They offered great recommendations and made sure we were looked after without ever being intrusive. Whether you're a Japanese food connoisseur or just looking for a fantastic meal, Robata delivers on every level. Can’t wait to come back!

The food was great but we didn’t appreciate that they took the reservation for 21:30 knowing that the kitchen closed 15 minutes after, making us pressurized to order the food. Additionally, the staff started taking the rubbish bags out whilst customers still having dinner. Nevertheless we found the staff friendly.

A surprisingly quiet restaurant in a very busy area. Sashimi, robata skewers, beef fillet and black cod were all excellent, together with some unusual cocktails and sake.

Lovely pre-theatre dinner with friendly and attentive staff and a variety of Japanese fare from sashimi to sushi to robataki to bao and more. Highly recommended.

We shared a great variety of smaller items. The tuna rolls were a big step above what one normally sees. The chicken and pork skewers were delicious and attractively presented. Pork gyozas wee great. But we really enjoyed the mushroom tobanyaki. It was the star of a great show. Service was excellent. We’d have liked a wider selection of wines by the glass but that was a minor ding in a delightful experience. Thank you.
