Riva Cucina was my go to place, it has been reviewed now several times, it's crowded, make a reservation....My salad with pancetta was ok, except the pancetta was way too overdone, couldn't chew, my porcetta was good...friend got seafood risotto, was meh!

Everything was excellent, but the entrees were disappointing. The ambiance and service were superb.
We started with 2 signature cocktails and the scallops, which were both excellent. The beet salad was good, but lacked an ingredient that pulled them all together... perhaps balsamic?? And I remembered the bread and olive oil in to be outstanding, but the bread was toasted instead of fresh... think this may have changed from before???
I ordered the seafood risotto, which was disappointing. The seafood was diced small and while the shrimp came out good, the rest was just ok. It was tomato based, but not very flavorful. My husband got the osso Buco,which was tender, but served over spinach instead of the roasted veggies. Again, just not very flavorful.
We loved this place last time we came. Perhaps the chef changed? We may try one more time.
Excellent food and service
The food here was off the charts. We were a group of 7 and shared everything and I have to say the risotto and the pastas were some of the best we have ever had!!! And the service was fantastic. Definitely will be back, and soon.
We love Riva Cucina. The food is excellent, and authentically Italian. We and our friends totally enjoyed our dinner, and will return!
Good quality and well prepared meal! The fritto misto was light and crisp, and the petrale sole entree was fresh, well prepared and tasty over a nice creamy polenta. I also liked the cappuccino panna cotta, although it wasn't the typical panna cotta in a little pot with a hard outer shell, it was still very tasty. My wife enjoyed her seafood risotto very much and I liked the seafood broth in the sauce.
The candle-lit romantic atmosphere was nice, but the lack of lighting made the menus a bit difficult to read. The food was very good and moderately priced, and the service professional and competent.
We ordered the crepes, lamb shank and petrale sole.
The "crepes" resembled an omelette and were a bit eggier and cheesier than we preferred. The petrale sole was a bit mushy and lacking in seasoning, but the moist and tender fall off the bone lamb shank was excellent and the highlight of the meal. The lemon almond cake for dessert was also delicious, but the cappuccinos we ordered arrived lukewarm at the table. Though there is room for improvement, overall we enjoyed the food and ambience of this charming little restaurant.
Almost everything was fabulous, from the burrata and scallop appetizers to the coffee and lemon cake dessert! I loved the gnocchi themselves but the special duck orange and cabernet sauce disappointed with little flavor, somewhat dry and no cabernet flavor that I could detect. A simple sage butter or pesto sauce would have been perfect with the lovely pillows. The service was outstanding, and the ambience warm and elegant for our delayed Valentine's dinner.

Chose this place as a reply to a Valentine's Day dinner. We had never been there. The Italian food was creative and delicious. Cocktails were spot on. Each course kept our rave reviews going. We'll definitely be coming back. Great find.

First, we loved what the restaurant looked like and that it is quiet...you can actually have a dinner conversation. We enjoyed our salads, but were a bit disappointed in the pasta dishes (bolognese with gluten free pasta - maybe it was the pasta - but the dish needed more sauce). The petrale sole was terrific, as was the bread pudding and chocolate cake. I would return and try other dishes.

Our bean & grain soup had been burnt. The burned flavor was very strong. The ossobuco did not taste fresh, and the two people in our party that had the ossobuco were violently ill within an hour after dining here. The ossobuco did not have the usual gremolata topping, but masses of dried herbs were on top instead. The spinach with the ossobuco had not been drained properly, and left a large pool of water on the plate surrounding the already too wet polenta. The sole was cooked well, and the baby kale garnishing the fish was good, but the potatoes with it were not fresh. We eat lunch here frequently, and are usually happy, but our dinner on February 1, 2020 was a disaster.
The food was tasty but nothing special. We had spinach fettuccini with mushrooms was quite good with properly cooked pasta while the pappardelle was slightly overcooked but the minced pork shoulder was good. The beet salad was good, as were the grilled shrimp (the cabbage bed could have had more citrus olive oil). Bread pudding was good but no match for that at Tartine and the pana cotta was very good.

Two of us had the restaurant week menu. My husband and I ordered off the menu as the entrees were only pasta dishes. I chose the scallop appetizer, mixed lettuce salad and osso bucco. The osso bucco was more of a stew with the polenta. I have had it better at Rive Cuchina. Enjoyed a bottle of Sangiovese—very delicious.
You can actually hear your companions talk here! Plus the food is very good. We went for restaurant week and had a grilled shrimp appetizer, a squid ink past with smoked salmon and panda cotta for dessert. All three courses were delicious and the service was very attentive. We will definitely return.
This was a great experience, start to finish. My server was helpful, knowledgable and very personable. I had what might be the best cocktail in the world (La Marasca) and everything I ordered to eat was delicious. I would go back in a heartbeat!

We came here to celebrate a birthday. We were all very happy with our selection of cocktails and meal. I’m not to familiar with Italian wines and our server made a great recommendation to pair with my selection of pasta. Will definitely find back!
We can't imagine a better place to celebrate our Golden Anniversary! In fact EVERY special event needs to include dinner or lunch at Riva Cucina. Every dish is perfection: Insalata de bietole (beets), fillet of sole, seafood risotto! All great. And we were delighted with an Italian white wine we had never seen before: Timorasso (Ricci). Riva Cucina is simply: il megliore! Mille Grazie!
Maybe best Italian restaurant in Berkeley. Beautiful building, nice interior, friendly and attentive wait staff, good variety in menu, and tasty well prepared food. I had the soup, one nicely prepared scallop in shell, and risotto with seafood. All were very good.

I was expecting their usual menu with primi , secondi, etc, but the dishes they had were all wonderful! I’ve never had such a good dish with jumbo shrimp. And the desserts? Just awesome!!

We had the New Years Eve three course dinner menu with the poached seafood cabbage salad, lamb shanks and lemon tart dessert, which were all wonderful and huge! We ate the other half of our lamb shanks on New Years Day for dinner and they were still tender and fantastic!
This restaurant was a perfect choice to have dinner with friends. We could hear what they had to say and enjoy a lovely meal together. We were very happy with our choice.
Excellent food, though a bit pricey. I would like to go there more often but probably will save it for special occasions due to small portions of appetizers and overall high prices.

Reliably superb. We share an endive salad and both ordered the Petrale Sole. Best I've ever had, and I dine at Tadich in San Francisco at least once a month. We wanted a Savignon Blanc but were offered an Italian white instead which was outstanding. We'll be back.

Been here many times. Get one of the baked oysters to start. Any pasta is terrific as are the more substantial mains. Solid wine list, great floor staff.
Quality food. Nice presentation. The dishes could use a little salt, to bring out the flavor and quality ingredients. Reasonably priced. Wooden chairs and benches make for uncomfortable seating for extended periods. Overall it’s a better than average Italian restaurant for the Bay Area that doesn’t disappoint.
