Very friendly staff. Food is great. Especially the desert.
We are from out of town and it nice to have a very good view of the lake and the service was great. The mussels were way overdone and you could hardly remove them from the shell. No lemon or butter came with them. The clam chowder was watery and lacked flavor. For these prices, I was really disappointed.
Was a perfect evening with a delicious meal at Riva and followed by a performance at the Shakes!
Do not go here! You can make a reservation put in the notes that it's somebody's birthday, then call 30 minutes before arriving to remind them that it's somebody's birthday, then tell your receptionist who seats you that it's someone's birthday then tell your server that it's someone's birthday and guess what..... nobody will wish your wife a happy birthday. They don't care they are busy serving all of the tourists who eat on Navy Pier and if you ask for some boxes for your food, they will bring you the boxes along with the bill and won't even bring you the dessert menu, do you know why? Because they don't care they just want to get you in and out as quick as possible and that is the way they will treat you. If you say something to the manager about how poorly the service was and the disacknowledgement of your wife's birthday, they will promise you that the next time you come back it will be better. Why would you ever go back? They didn't even check me in properly on the Open Table app so halfway through dinner I got an email saying I didn't show up. I wish that meant I didn't have to waste my money. This was a total shitshow
We hadn't been to Riva's in years because Navy Pier is so touristy. But we were going to the theater and the restaurant was convenient. We were very pleasantly surprised. The view is beautiful, the food was excellent, and the noise level was great for conversation. It was really good and I would go back just for the food.
Perfect venue for eating before a play next door. Excellent service, wonderful food, great view--totally comfortable, memorable experience.
The locale gave the impression of something special. The food's ingredients were good and well prepared, with the right amount of good quality oil. Our waiter was great, making us welcomed without being overbearing. He was attentive of our need to be done in time for the theatre show. I will likely return to this restaurant for some special occasion.
Service is great, food is great, ambiance is perfect. We love this place!
We came to Riva because we had tickets for Shakespeare theatre and we were celebrating our daughter's birthday. We are subscribers at the Theatre and usually come to Riva once a year, for a special occasion since it is a little pricier than other options on Navy Pier. But it was wonderful and well worth it. We had a beautiful view of the lakefront. Our daughter lives in Europe now and delighted in taking pictures. I had mentioned it was her birthday, but had never celebrated a specific celebration there, so did not know what to expect. My husband ordered scallops; Allison and I ordered the halibut special. The wine was extraordinary; the food was fabulous, beautifully presented and very delicious. The service was impeccable. The real surprise was when our waiter appeared with a large portion of cake--chocolate, 6 layers, enough for 3 very generous pieces, with a birthday candle and singing. None of us could finish our cake, but it was wonderful and such a treat. It was a magnificent night. We will come again
Always a GREAT TIME and EXCELLENT FOOD!! Service was FABULOUS!! lol coming here when we are in the city.
Fantastic!! We took an important client to dinner and the whole atmosphere was perfect - from our attentive waiter to the delicious food to the ambiance of the restaurant - perfect!
On a side note - this was the 3rd night in a row for one of the group having a Filet - and this was hands-down the best!
Rude Manager as he has no clue how to treat customers during pick time. Also server was rude until he saw that we were serious customers. Lucky for the restaurant the food is pretty good and excellent location.
Riva has always been one of my favorites for special occasion, so I invited my goddaughter for dinner celebrating her new professional license. We were greeted warmly, given the choice of a window table, orders were promptly taken, but there was quite a long delay between completion of our appetizers and salad and presentation of our entrees: Cioppino, and Alaskan Halibut with Lobster Risotto. Although we had ordered one of each to share, and had already split a large salad, the assistant server placed the large portioned platters, one to each of us. The food was lukewarm at best, and after another 10 minutes to get dinner plates it was downright cold. Our server Alicia was professional on ordering, and on bringing our check, but stopped by only once when I had complained our food was cold. She promptly took it to be reheated, and the dishes were returned warmed, but somehow warmed over seafood is just never as good as fresh off the stove. We had to repeatedly request refills for water, tea, and coffee. This is a nice restaurant with fine reputation, the food tasted great, but our service was curt, very slow, inattentive, and not up to Phil Stefani standards.
Have not eaten in Riva for years. Wanted a medium price seafood restaurant. Riva’s hit the spot. We went for Sunday lunch. A giatantic portion of shrimp, mussels and crab legs with a large potion of crusted bread in a wine-butter sauce was excellent served in a cast iron skillet. I could not finish it.
My wife had their cold seafood trio. Clams, calamari and shrimp were yummy. Our friends had salmon and steak sandwich. Both were cooked as requested.
We had a window table, overlooking Navy Pier. Great view.
Service was above average.
We will be back.
We like going here before Chicago Shakespeare events. The food is great, the service is top notch and efficient, and the view is awesome.
Overpriced, but reliably fine food and an amazing location. You feel like you’re dining by the ocean.
Chicago Marathon! Big portions were great after race :)
If I could give a half star the food would be a 3.5 I may be a jaded Manhattanite and score tough but the crab cake was a little dry from being over cooked. The tuna was excellent but the chillian sea bass was bland with a boring side of yellow squash and carrots. The view was great even on a foggy day. The service was definitely rushed. Less than a minute after we finished the crab cakes our entrees were at the table.
I’ll probably give Riva another chance when I’m back in Chicago since the upside outweighs the cons.
Great food, great service, we have been to Riva’s many times and will go again when we are in Chicago.
We arrived early and sat at the bar. We enjoyed the bartender, Juan, so much that we stayed in the bar for our dinner.
This was my first time at Riva. We had 6 PM reservations on a Saturday, and were seated promptly.
Menu was varried, so many great choices. Potstickers and Crab Cakes we're great. Linguini with Scallops and Pasta special were excellent. Portions we're good. We saw interesting food going to other diners that we intend to try next time.
Service was polite and prompt.
Our waitress was great
Straight forward Seafood/Steak house- very good. Grilled halibut was excellent on sautéed garlic spinach. Crab legs were large and well enjoyed, as were Two different steaks. Service was well timed before theater and the dinning room was quite full. The room is light and airy and the view was great.
We had a terrific meal on Thursday night.
We enjoyed the service, food and ambiance.
Thank you for the wonderful experience.
I really want to love this place, but can't give it a good rating on the food - it's only okay. The lake and skyline views are spectacular, especially at sunset, and the service is just perfect. Unfortunately, even though I limited my order to a cocktail (budget margarita mix), a wedge salad (over-saturated with dressing) and fried calamari (limp, lukewarm and chewy), it was still a $60 outing (I'm a good tipper.) The location, right next to the Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier, makes it perfect for a pre-theater dinner - except for the dinner part...
Delicious dining. Salmon was perfectly cooked....not overdone or dry. We usually dine at Riva prior to Shakespeare. We missed your little candies that we would often get on our way out!
Great pre-theater venue if you're headed to Shakespeare. Excellent selection of seafood and seafood based dishes which you'd expect, but plenty of good stuff for carnivores. Had the broiled lobster tail which was excellent. Blue cheese salad wedge to start could have used a thicker, cheesier dressing. The five layer chocolate cake we had for dessert was to die for!
Riva is a good place for a decent fish meal. The ambiance is great with Lake Michigan views and twinkling lights at night. Very enjoyable.
Very pleasant atmosphere and great view. Waiter wasn’t too enthused. Food was delicious but portion on salad was ridiculously small. Bad value.
Very expensive evening. Glad I was on an expense account.
Riva's is always a pleasure. The food was exceptional. Our out-of-town friends loved it as well, both for the food and the view. We have been to Riva many times, and it will continue to be one of our go-to spots.
As always, food and service were impeccable.
The view of the lake and the tour sips make for a lovely setting.
My son and I dined here because it was the most convenient place before attending a performance by Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. We chose the special 3-course pre-theatre dinner because it seemed to be so much less expensive--relatively speaking--than ordering off the menu a la carte. The service was certainly swift, pleasant and efficient--obviously they were used to getting people in and out in time for a performance. The pre-theatre dinner was fine--the food was good, but nothing out of the ordinary, and the choices were pretty limited. Prices for the other options on the menu were much too high for us to consider. I doubt we would come back again.
Service was very good. Food was just ok. The prices seemed high for average food. Probably will not be returning.
Excellent fresh fish and seafood soup. Kind of expensive but nice location
I have been to Riva many times for many occasions. Staff is very pleasant and accommodating. This was Grandma Rose's 91st Birthday, and she loved it. It is very easy to park, and great access for that 91 year old. Good food, great view, and fun people make this a great lunch, dinner, or wine and appetizer experience.
Fabulous food and service. A little pricey, but fine for special events.
We frequently dine at Riva pre theater performances at Chicago Shakespeare. The food is always well served and good to eat with enough choice on the menu to please all. The ambiance is always excellent wherever we are seated. Service is good and takes into account that we have a time limit or on the ocassions we are early service can be leisurely if requested.
Wonderful pre-theatre venue. Great food and fantastic views. Superior service.
This is always my go to place for out of towners visiting the city of Chicago
I always head to Riva when attending Chicago Shakes productions. The view and service are wonderful. Their fish and chips are perfection. The assorted ice creams are great for the table and taste home made.
