Great service. Have raised their game.
Service was somewhat disjointed. It took a long time for us to place our order, then get our food, and orders for a last glass of wine and an espresso came very late.
Came early (5 pm) -- plenty of time to get to concert at Zellerbach Hall at 8 pm (in fact, I was there just after 7). By 6 pm the restaurant was full. Trout dinner was excellent, with fresh wilted spinach, a large floret of wonderfully roasted cauliflower, just enough slices of roasted purple potatoes, delicious surprise of chopped marinated olives with lemon, and lemon aioli decorating the plate. Perfect with Sav Blanc (tried the French white blend and it was too sweet -- my waiter changed it out for me). I was happy stopping there, but intrigued by the roasted honey panna cotta with lemon ice and huckleberries -- ordered it. Too many flavors for me. The panna cotta tasted like creme brulee (but no crust) -- too rich. I saved it for the last and enjoyed the lemon and huckleberries -- a tangy treat after the trout. This is my 4th or 5th time to eat at Revival -- my go-to dinner before concerts at CalTech.
Delicious vegetarian options beautifully presented. Delicious spirits and wine. Tasty dessert. YUMMY
My food was cold and tasted like a bunch of leftovers thrown together. I didn’t send it back because I didn’t want to wait while everyone else in group ate.
Great menu, fresh cocktails, friendly service. Close to Berkeley Rep
My son attends the Jazz School across the street, so Revival is the BEST place to meet! Great food and Service!!!!!
We had a great late brunch at Revival. The food was delicious and the service quite good.
We came for brunch on Mother’s Day. Table was ready when we arrived. Waitress was very attentive. Food arrived quickly. Was delicious. Great ambience and atmosphere. We had our 2 yr old with us and she loved it as well!
Place was busy so maybe that’s why the service was lacking. Even when the food is good, if you’re waiting for your drink, or your main course comes and they clear your unfinished salad early it’s hard to not notice. Little things like asking for bread during the starter course but not getting it until well into the main course is annoying. Water glasses left empty etc. Our chicken was good as was the seafood risotto but not sure if we will be back. Too many other places around.
They mean it when they say allow 2 hours prior to the theater start time. It was 10-15 minutes before we saw our waiter. Enough time to start wondering if they knew you were there. (This was my second time here and the service was slow the last time as well.) We told our waiter of our theater start time once we saw him and we were finished with about 10 minutes to spare. That included appetizer and dessert. I would not have minded the 2 hour meal if the noise level had been one of which we could have carried on a conversation without having to considerably raise our voices to be heard. My ears were ringing when I left.
The appetizer and entree were good, although on the salty side. The almond cake was moist, but rather bland in flavor. Also, this isn't the place to go if you're on any sort of specialty diet.
We love the dinner menu and decided to try brunch. The wild mushroom toast was delicious. Earthy flavors with various types of mushrooms. The poached eggs and spinach were yummy. My companion loved the spring omelette with fresh vegetables. We will return.
First time at Revival before a Berkeley Rep performance. Was drawn to the menu and ingredients. My omelette itself and the greens were fabulous. And, I was disappointed in the Duck Fat Home fries. Wilted seeming. Not very crisp or flavorful. Service was not so attentive: asked for some hot sauce and it got forgotten for some time which delayed my start of the meal. It is convenient and I appreciate the ability to reserve so I will likely try again.
A very interesting menu with lots of opportunities for sharing.
I’m currently in downtown Berkeley (I’m going to the Berkeley repertory theater) trying out this brand new restaurant.. I have ordered a wonderful local brewed beer by North Coast brewery called Brother Thelonious Abbey Ale , quite rich dark and delicious. Then I ordered a Rosé, the only one they had by the glass called Horse and Plow, Northcoast. a bit on the acidic side- a little too tart.
The broccolini is fabulous! lightly blanched then lightly flame 🔥grilled with a wonderful butter garlic sauce poured on the top it’s absolutely incredible.
The braised lamb shoulder with grilled asparagus and mashed Yukon potatoes and pea and gremolata is absolutely Delicious- it’s simply… Lip-smaking good!! And the Ale goes superbly well with it.
And of course a good double espresso☕️!!
This restaurant is very modern updated clean and romantic with excellent service. I highly recommend it I think it’s going to do well.
(did I mention the lamb is spectacular!)
We waited 20 mins for drinks, 30 for our app, 45 for dinner and it was slow, several empty tables.
The wings were terrible, chicken was dry but the fish and beet fettuccini were both food.
Cool ambiance but our service was painful
Came from SF to meet a friend and it was super convenient as the Bart station entrance is right outside the restaurant. The ambiance is very nice- cute area in the middle with string lights and lanterns. Very friendly and attentive staff, helped make it special for my friend’s birthday with a dessert w/ candle. Food is a little on the pricey side but honestly worth it. I’d recommend the kale caesar salad and pizza!
I have been here a few times and had great bar food and cocktails. We decided to go for dinner with guests of ours. After hemming and hawing I opted for the Skywalker Ranch Wagyu Beef Sirloin - Medium-Rare. It had no seasoning. Was cooked medium well. Not that it would have mattered because I would have need an electric knife to cut through this piece of leather. Regular grain fed non wagyu beef would have been more tender than what they threw on the plate. I almost didn't take the remnants home but remembered I had dogs. When they got a hold of it, even they couldn't chew through it and one actually choked. I know this review is a bit harsh and I usually do not go beyond the star rating and will often elect to just never frequent an establishment given all of the choices consumers have in the bay area, but I felt like this needed to be shared.
Dear Joshua, I am so sorry you had a disappointing experience on 4/20. Your steak should have been seasoned and cooked perfectly. We get mostly very enthusiastic response about the Wagyu. Your server should have intercepted the problem, and got you another perfectly cook steak. Please give us another chance and ask for Chef Amy so I can send you some of my favorite dishes on the house.
Lovely food! Lovely waitstaff! Love ambiance!
The food was very good. The baby back ribs were large and perfectly cooked. And the sauce on the lamb shank was great. The service was lacking: We asked to split a salad. They forgot, and brought out one salad with no extra plates. After we were halfway through the mains, the waiter brought out sharper knives. And finally , after bringing the check, our waiter disappeared for a ridiculously long time and no other people would make eye contact or volunteer to take the check.
Dear Part Time Local, Please accept our apologies for the service mishaps on 4/18. We are training all our servers to execute the steps of service at the right time, and to be on top of the needs of the table. We appreciate your feedback and will make sure the entire staff is paying more attention to every guest in the room. Kind Regards, Chef Amy
Overall I would go back because
- location works for theater events & nearby parking
- value good for quality & pocketbook
- interesting dishes & beverages
- perfect sound level and table/seating spacing for conversation
- liked the decór & ambiance
- service was attentive, efficient & helpful
The service was deplorable.
The waitress and waiter did their utmost to
serve everybody, but two people for over 23
tables is clearly not enough. The management
did not employ enough staff, including the cooks who were also overwhelmed.
Food was good, but having to wait 30 mins for a cup of coffee and
over 45 mins for food in not an incentive to return.
Always a pleasure to dine at Revival. The Mandarin salad and MacFarland Springs trout were delicious. Wait staff is friendly and attentive and the kitchen staff pays attention to detail.
One of the best meals we have had in a long time. Highly recommended and perfect before a Rep show
Thank you, Randy! We love the good feedback!
Best meal I've had here. I eat here about twice a year pre-theater and often find the food just average, a little over-priced for the quality. This time everything was delicious, well-seasoned and carefully thought-out. We had the blood orange salad, trout and panacotta. Impressive meal.
Dear Alice, Thank you kindly for your nice review. We have been working hard on all the details to provide the best dining experience possible. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know!
Amy and her team went above and beyond. We love Revival and it is our favorite pre-Theatre dining spot in Berkeley.
Nice atmosphere with lots of people having a nice night out. However, I felt the prices were steep for the quality of the food.
Well, I'm not usually one to slam a restaurant in print - unless they deserve it. The front of house people were clueless and unprofessional, bartender and waitstaff poorly trained. We waited over half an hour to get a drink, had to flag our waiter down to order food and were still waiting for our first course an hour in...the salads finally came. Nothing special, just salad. Overpriced. Half an hour later, we started to think about things like WHERE THE HELL ARE OUR ENTREES? They never came. We had theater tix across the street and were not the only ones sitting and waiting....and waiting...finally spoke to the "person in charge" and told them we had to leave. Then we got the only thing that arrived on time - the check, via the BUSBOY! No apologies,no discount, no contact from our waiter or the front of house dimwits. We left cash, otherwise I might still be waiting to get my card back! Look, I understand, any restaurant can have a bad night, but that was a truly dismal display of what a restaurant can be when it's staff is poorly trained and two twentysomthing twits are left in charge. Pathetic.
Staff is great, menu seasonal and varied. Too darn noisy!
Great birthday dinner spot!
I would recommend Revival only because it is across from Berkeley Rep and therefore quite handy for pre/post performance dining. This visit was for brunch which was acceptable but nothing out of the ordinary, just okay.
Kris, Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it. Would you like to let us know what we could do to amplify your experience in the future? We are under new management now and are looking to engage more with our neighborhood to provide an exceptional experience that you're excited to come back for. I'm all ears and we hope to see you again. Chris Buffalino General Manager
Fantastic, creative artistically presented fare (hearty too). Lovely server and beignets to sing about. Marvelous brunch - plus they take reservations! Highly recommend
I mistakenly booked the wrong day for a party of seven. When we all showed up, the manager was gracious enough to accommodate us at a table. I am so thankful for that. Add to that excellent food and wine… The evening could have been a disaster but instead was a wonderful memorable evening.
It's our pleasure to accommodate! Thank you for joining us.
Excellent food and cocktails every time. The service here is always amazing and they are queer friendly.
It was Saturday night, so there was a crowd... which the restaurant was completely unprepared for. It took an entire hour just for the appetizer (“warm olives,” which were cold) to arrive. They did offer to bring us some bread while we waited—but they charged us for it. They had run out of two of the (small) selection of mains. The trout, which I ended up ordering after being informed that they were out of the duck, and which arrived 20 minutes after everyone else’s dinners, was delicious. And the wait staff were apologetic when you could get ahold of them. But I will never eat there again unless I literally have all night and am not especially hungry.
I can't believe I've never eaten at Revival. Especially before a play at Berkeley Rep. So we did, and loved it. The food was superb. Decor, atmosphere, service — all great. Tip: Give yourself at least 1 hour 45 minutes to fully enjoy your meal before a play. It gets kinda nervous at the end. You've been warned.
Anthony, Thank you for your feedback on our restaurant. We are actively working on improving service and overall value to our treasured Bay Area clientele, especially those who flood in for a pre-theater bite. We're eager to improve and can't wait for your next visit so we can deliver another great experience to you and your guests. Chris Buffalino General Manager
This is a great lace for brunch before a play at Berkeley Rep. The 4 of us arrived at 12:07 for a 12 o’clock reservation and were seated right away. I had the mushroom toast which was quite tasty. I was not impressed with my cocktail, the special whiskey sour with tea in it. My husband liked his fried chicken eggs Benedict very much. Our friends had the shushuka and a kale entree with poached eggs and enjoyed them.
We wrapped up brunch at 1:40 and went to our 2PM show!
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. We can't wait to host you again!
The food is creative and delicious, the cocktail menu is fun and very original. The staff is friendly and helpful, especially sensitive about pacing, which is important for the theater goers.
We love Revival! It is always our go-to place to eat before the theater. Give them a try. You won't be sorry.
1sy visit amazing, 2nd visit not good. Food bland and service hit and miss. What we ordered didnt arrive..disappointed
Thank you again for your comments, and I see you had a much less enticing experience over your first visit. I won't make excuses for poor service and execution, save it to say that these reviews are helping us improve, we acknowledge our shortcomings, and are actively working on improving our systems, staff, and product to offer you a great value and experience. Please allow me to invite you back so we can WOW you once more.
