Restaurant Pomme Ratings and Reviews
A few years ago we stopped in for a meal at Restaurant Pomme on a trip through Gordonsville, Virginia on our way to some vineyards to the West of town and have since made the one hour and 15 minute trip from our home outside of Richmond just to enjoy the wonderful food and delightful atmosphere. If you you like french cooking this is for you. Although I have never been to France, this restaurant's interior and exterior captures for me the feeling of a small french country locale. My wife and I have been there a half dozen times and neither of us has yet to have a less than superb meal. We have tried them at lunch and dinner and most recently Sunday brunch and are always pleased.
My second visit to this lovely restaurant. Have not been disappointed yet. The wait staff is wonderful; attentive and friendly. Was greeted at the front door by either the manager or owner. We were 20 minutes early for our reservation but she was lovely about finding and setting up a table for us and not making us wait until our reservation. It was a rainy night and there was a fire in the fireplace, fabulous food, beautiful dinning room, and exquisite service. I could not have asked for more.
We were so looking forward to our lunch. Sadly, we were disappointed. Two of our meals were cold and two had hairs in them. The frites must have been leftover from the day before as they were cold and hard. Desserts and coffee were excellent. Skip the lunch and order dessert only. I hope it was just a very off day.
We usually always plan to enjoy Pomme at least once while visiting in Charlottesville. Food is always good and staff is friendly. Since it was early, the atmosphere was quiet and we could converse well, but toward the end of our dining, the restaurant had filled up and it became quite loud. All in all, it was a great evening.
We live in Richmond and when traveling to visit family in Palmyra, we take the opportunity to dine at Pomme. This trip, we brought friends from Williamsburg just so they could have the Pomme experience. They traveled an hour to Richmond and then the 4 of us traveled the one and a half hr trip together. It was worth the journey. We weren't disappointed!
One of the top 3 or so French restaurants in the Charlottesville area. Food is fabulous and Crystal the waitress was wonderful. Everything tasted very fresh. Would not recommend it for younger children, but late high school and older should be fine. Not inexpensive but great quality and perfectly cooked. A real treat.
This is a true gem!! My wife and I stumbled upon this restaurant last year while visiting the area! The food is amazing, the service superb, and the wine list rivals that of the big restaurants in the city. We will continue to enjoy this gem as long as we go to area.
This is a restaurant we found while vacationing in VA several years ago and we were thrilled to return for a meal again this month. The food is excellent and service is always friendly and efficient. Wish we lived closer - we would surely go there regularly if we were local.
On a recent weekday lunch by two couples who are experience foodies, our experience was not up to usual standards. This has been one of our favorite places to eat out for several years and we drive 45 minutes to get here. Even though they were not full and had two, maybe three servers working, the service was spotty and distracted: water glasses were left empty, iced tea refills had to be requested, plates came out at different times, the server (Crystal ??) did not know ingredients and absolutely butchered the French names of dishes. The hostess/manager was seldom on the floor so that we could call her attention to the irksome issue. Some of the food this time was underwhelming as well. Soup of the day was sold out by 12:45. Although my mussel soup was superb - rich, creamy and packed with mussels, my duck confit was dry and tough and the wild rice was gloppy. Onion soups were highly praised but overpriced at $11 each. Two salads were nice but the portions were ridiculously small. The filet of sole was perfectly done although the accompaniments were very ordinary. Every restaurant can have occasional bad days...we hope this is not the beginning of a downward trend so we will come back. But $90 for two is an expensive lunch and deserved better performance all around.
Pomme is an easy to find, attractive fine dining restaurant in the center of the shopping area of Gordonsville with ample parallel parking on the street.
After hearing about Pomme for some time, we made reservations and set off on the pleasant 40 minute drive to Gordonsville.
We were seated immediately at a comfortable table by the friendly staff and our drink orders were taken very promptly. The wine menu is well crafted with a good variety of both cost conscious and very good wines. I passed over a couple of favorites To try a local Barboursville wine, which was better than I’d expected.
We ordered a first courses of a creamy chicken tarragon soup and a crispy pork belly with chorizo hash. The soup was very good with just the right balance of cream and herbs. The best part of the pork belly was actually the chorizo hash as the actual pork belly didn’t quite make it to crispy.
For our main courses, we had a New York Strip with truffled potatoes and braised short rib with carrots and parsnips. While the steak was OK, the truffled potatoes (which were made with a generous amount of black truffle oil) was the winner. The braised short rib was completely average, and again The winner of that dish were the perfectly cooked carrots/parsnips.
For desert, we both ordered apple tarts. These too were average. The pastry was flaky and buttery, but poorly formed and sloppy in appearance. The apples in the tart were minced and overwhelmed with cinnamon. A scoop of what looked and tasted like store-bought ice cream sat unceremoniously on top and mostly drowned the tart.
The service was very friendly, but not as attentive as I should have been; my water glass was completely empty 3 times during our visit.
If this review seems tough, it’s not because dinner wasn’t good, it’s because it wasn’t better than just good food. After a 20% tip, the bill (for 2) was right at $200. In that range, the meal and service should be memorable.
I have dined here a number of times and have never been disappointed. Just delicious! Their autumn fall salad was creatively plated and possessing just the right amount of flavor and texture. I found it extraordinary. My sole was scrumptious and dessert of sorbet topped off a lovely meal. My companions enjoyed their pork belly, lamb, onion soup, salmon, apple tart and creme brûlée. Best restaurant around!
My husband and I always enjoy dining at Restaurant Pomme. The food is consistently delicious and the service great. Yesterday, we were greeted and served by Geraldine and when we expressed our condolences at the passing of the original owner/chef she told us he was her father. We thoroughly enjoyed our delicious Sunday Brunch - my husband enjoyed his Eggs Benedict and I enjoyed the Chicken & Mushroom Crepes...yummy!
Restaurant Pomme remains one of our top choices for dining in the greater Charlottesville area. It's a 35 minute drive from our southern Albemarle farm to Gordonsville, and worth every minute. Restaurant Pomme is authentic French cuisine, but at an exceptional price. Family run, friendly, and quaint in all the right ways. Their Sunday brunch is our go-to option, with french toast, omelettes and other great dishes, plus a broad wine list with a very knowledgeable sommelier (the owner's son) willing to assist if asked. This most recent visit was for my sister's birthday, who was visiting from Washington, DC. I had two specials: butternut squash and apple soup to start, followed by a spinach, tomato and goat cheese omelette, paired with a glass of rose from the Provence region. My sister enjoyed the always popular French toast, with breakfast potatoes and sparkling mineral water from France. Fresh baked baguettes were offered to the table, which cannot be missed. As always, we were greeted at the table by the owner, a remarkable Frenchwoman who can offer very insightful information on dishes (and regions of France to visit) if asked. A separate bar has now been opened, with wines, authentic cocktails and small plates, and I look forward to a future happy hour visit. This is a can't miss option for French fare.
This is my second time here. First was a blurr..lots of wine. This time waitress very attentive. Started with the escargot, they were not great, cream sauce good, little flavor. My husband had the "rack of lamb", not, 2 double chops, tasted good, corn pudding (?) soo good. His dish better than my halibut, extremely salty, otherwise would have been good. Need to offer fresh ground pepper. Do not use pepper on table without putting it in hand, pours out! For the $ spent would not go back.
I love the Pomme! Was a bit disappointed in the sole which I always love and anticipated, but it was over battered and the crust was flour-y. Too much flour for a fish that only needs to be pan sauteed as I recall in past visits. With that much flour it should have had a crispier surface.
My daughter's Halibut was delicious as was the chicken cordon bleu, and the onion soup was delicious.
Just wanted to comment on the fish...
My wife and I went there to celebrate a birthday. We have eaten there many times and the food has always been great. This time was no exception. My wife had sole and I had the halibut. Both dishes were wonderful and well presented. The service was attentive and friendly. This is not a restaurant that you will get in and out quickly, but rather a place to spend a lovely evening. We will definitely go back. It is well worth the drive.
Lunch on a Saturday to meet up with friends....very comfortable, good service, Cote De Rhone wine great.....Onion soup good, side salad was refreshing. Laid back atmosphere. The little village of Gordonsville is very special, interesting shops...the shop POSH will make custom clothing...love it!
