   Rare has been one of our favorite restaurants in Greenville. Our last dinner was very disappointing. The quality of the steak was inadequate. One of the steaks was not cooked to the desired temp and had to be returned and the meat was tough and tasteless.

   I had a mini reunion with old Army buddies. I had not seen one of them in over 23 years so I wanted someplace special. The food, service, and atmosphere were all absolutely perfect.

   The ambiance and the overall atmosphere is wonderful. The wine is very reasonably priced, and we started with the mussels which were EXCELLENT. However, the rest of the dinner was not so great. Neither my date's nor my steak were cooked how we ordered them. The ribeye was exceptionally chewy, and the fat was very tough (too tough to cut through in some places). The parmesan mashed potatoes were overwhelming, and the risotto with wild mushroom was just ok (VERY strong mushroom taste). We did order the Blount cake for dessert, and that was good.

   went there for my wife bday, we had a party of 6 ppl. made reservations, were seated quickly.., great location in the heart of Greenville downtown. main entrees took longer than expected. But nobody on table had any complaint about the food, other than my plate was scorching hot. food tasted good and portions were enough for everybody. the sides -which are separate from meats - were family size with plenty of rations. bread was also brought to table. bathrooms were clean and presentable. dinning room was all open and allow you to see outside to main street, semi noisy though. If there is a real complaint is that they need to seriously upgrade their furniture. the rustic wood tables with bar like wood chairs and no upholstery doesnt belong in this upscale restaurant - especially with the prices they have.. this is a upscale restaurant so expect to pay much more for food.

   For the last 3 visits to Rare, the service has been extremely slow, taking 45 minutes to one hour to get appetizers after ordering and almost 45 minutes more for the entrees to arrive. the staff is attentive and one therefore assumes that it is a slow slow kitchen that is the issue. the food is excellent and the atmosphere enjoyable.

   I love a great steak. Specifically a great filet. I ordered the filet at Rare Steakhouse. To my surprise the $35 dollar filet came with only the filet and did not include any side item at all. This was very shocking to me for multiple reasons. The menu did not explain very well what the price of the steak was for. It also came as a shock because normally when I go to any steakhouse/higher dining restaurant such as The Green Room or Firebirds I would be able to get myself a filet for around 25-35 dollars and it would include at least one side option. I went ahead and ordered the steak and a side option (4$) with the hopes that the steak would be phenomenal for the money. I got the steak. It came out on a basic plate with no garnish or decor. It was boring. Not only was the plate presentation boring but the overall taste of the filet was boring as well. I hate to say that I was not impressed. I hope to see this place do very well where it is, but for the price I believe I will be taking my business elsewhere. I suggest at least changing the name is the restaurant to something other than "steakhouse."

    We love Rare for special nights out. The steaks are always perfectly cooked and the seafood options and raw oysters are delicious.
