Seafood
Travis and Ryan Croxton debut their spinoff from the highly acclaimed Rappahannock Oyster Bar at Union Market in Washington, DC. They’ve even brought their DC Chef, Kevin Kelly, to man the kitchen at this outpost. This location in the historic Cigar Factory Building on East Bay Street, allows room for Chef Kelly to showcase more of his cuisine to a larger audience, including an incredibly unique 40 seat raw bar. Oysters grown by the Croxton’s own Rappahannock Oyster Company are accentuated, but Kelly’s signature dishes like lambs’n’clams, crabcakes, shrimp & grits and the best po’ boy you’ll ever eat are enough reasons in their own right for constant visits. Coupled with a great cocktail program and focus on local ingredients, ROB is a great place for any occasion.

Was really underwhelmed. I've heard such great stuff and was just kind of mediocre. The fish dip was good and the proteins were great but the pairings were odd and seemed off the shelf like out of the bottle teriyaki sauce with a steak and frozen fries...sad since the proteins were so good! It's like a chain restaurant had a good protein purveyor...

This place is a little more casual than I anticipated, and they ran out of a few selections of oysters, but the food that we did get was wonderful, and the service was great, so all-in-all, my wife and I left very satisfied. We will definitely go again...we just won’t dress up this time. :)

Yes, I would recommend Rappahannock to our friends but mainly for the oysters which were outstanding. The appetizers were very good but the main dishes were so-so. The shrimp and grits were ok but the serving of grits was small and the black sauce was off-putting. The scallops were ok with the spicy sauce but again the bed of grits was small and tasteless. Having said all this, we will definitely go back but primarily for the oysters.

If you eat oysters it the place for you! I had a gift card and don't eat oysters. Also very limited menu for food not breaded and fried. The stew wasn't ready at 2:30 left me with ceviche, my husbands coleslaw and water.

They gave away our reservation to someone with the same first name. The bartender was so horrible. Food was good but that was the only plus. We wanted to like it so bad!!!! The service and people that work there were horrible.

Food was superb, as was Caty's service. She deftly highlighted the non-traditional look of the shrimp and grits to my father. He doesn't have the most adventurous palate, and probably would have been surprised by the black garlic component. Caty did a great job of aligning his expectations and he ended up loving the dish. Merguez with clams was excellent as well. Really solid desert list, the inclusion of after dinner drink pairing suggestions was a nice touch. I'll definitely be back regularly.

On my first visit, I was looking for a place to share some time in a nice setting with my guests and Rappahannock could not have been better. The oysters and beverages were superb, our server was very helpful in guiding us toward the right selections from the menu and everyone was just friendly.

Probably the best raw bar and seafood combination restaurant in Charleston; esp., for raw oysters. They offer a great variety. Other raw dishes also excellent. Good for seafood lovers. Probably not your first choice for anyone that doesn’t love seafood. Service is normally excellent.
Very causal noisy atmosphere -- not for a romantic night out.

My friend was visiting from out-of-town, and we have dined at Rappahannock for the past two or three years. We love the deluxe seafood towers; there are many different types of seafood and shellfish to sample. We LOVE the oysters, and we appreciate that the Rappahannock allowed us to substitute an extra dozen of oysters in place of the clams. The ceviche is delicious, but our favorites are probably the marinated mussels and the octopus salad. Great selection of wines! I usually get a bottle of the Albarino, because it pairs perfectly with seafood.

We have eaten there many times before, and enjoyed all our meals very much. This past Saturday, the 25th, was an unexpected experience. We both ordered the fish chowder soup as an appetizer, our mistake. The soup was so strong with spices, it was very difficult to eat, but instead of returning them, both my wife and I finished them. We both became sick that night with severe stomach problems.

Bad seating next to the kitchen and they would not move us, we even had a reservation so it would have been different if the table had been for walk-ins. Cold hanger steak, cold rice like it had been sitting waiting for pic up. I grew up on the Chesapeake Bay and the oysters were small, maybe too small to be harvested.

The grilled romaine was amazing! As was the shrimp and grits - be warned they use black garlic in their dish so it comes out looking a little muddy but the taste is DELICIOUS! I went with my husband and a friend and we all enjoyed our dishes. Service was great and despite Restaurant Week rush dishes came out in a timely manner and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

The reservation was worthless as they didn’t have a table for us. We were told we could dine at the bar.

Food was good, but portions incredibly small. You shouldn’t pay $100 for dinner for two (including an appetizer) and leave starving.

We requested more bread to go with our clam broth and were brought half a piece. The bartender asked if we’d like to request more because the chef appeared to be in a good mood. Ridiculous! Won’t go back I’m afraid.

Worst restaurant ever. General Manager Kyle Anderson was a complete jerk. Fish was under cook and they recooked the same fish to make it worst and ask that I accept it After the server recommend they cook a new fish. Would never attend this restaurant again. Kyle was extremely rude and I cannot believe a owner would allow him to operate and facilitate the operations of their restaurant. I’m totally appalled by him actions and character. Kyle Anderson I can assure you that you will end up a manager at Burger King just keep following the steps your currently taking. It’s your true destiny sir.

Angela, our waitress was incredible. She checked in several times, but not too many. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and the oysters, and provided great descriptions of the options. The food was also very good, and during happy hour, the oysters and wine are priced appropriately. I will 100% go back and will recommend to everyone I know.

We stopped by for Happy Hour. We ordered a dozen of the dollar oysters, and then got charged regular price for them. There wasn’t anyone at the front to greet us or seat us when we walked in. It took quite a while for our server to come over. The oysters were great, but not the price promised, and the service is slow.

We had made a reservation well in advanced but were told we still had to wait 30-35 minutes because every table was full of people that also had reservations. Granted it was New Year’s Eve but they should not have overbooked themselves. We chose to eat at the bar rather than waiting which was not as ambient and it was often hard to get the bartenders attention to put in an order because they were making so many other drinks. At least we got to sit and eat and made it to our later plans on time but we were not very pleased overall.
