Rangoon Ruby Burmese Cuisine - San Carlos Ratings and Reviews
Food was great as always, however, I think they may have been understaffed as service was slow. They usually have top notch service, but had to ask twice for water refills and they didn't give us new plates after the Tea Leaf Salad, before our entrees came, which they usually do. Hopefully, this is a one time thing as it was somewhat disappointing.
Excellent food with a wide variety of choices available at several levels of spiciness. Although the restaurant was not at all crowded, the service level was a bit amiss (refills of water required more than one request). And despite a specific reference to the occasion being a birthday, nothing special was offered, including anything from the staff.
It was my wife and I's 27th wedding anniversary and the hottest sept 1st in bay area history. When my wife called to make reservations she specifically asked if they had air conditionioning and the hostess said they did but it was running on low(?).As we walked up to the restaurant we noticed all the windows were open(not a good sign). The food was very good but it was so damn hot without any hint of air conditioning that it was too uncomfortable to fully enjoy our food.My wife started feeling faint so we ended up taking the rest of our food home.It will be an anniversary dinner we will never forget!
The tea leaf salad is a 10 and not to be missed. We also had the eggplant with shrimp that was excellent as was the vegetable pad Thai. The only disappointing dish was the jalapeño chicken. It had no sauce and we thought it a little dry. We usually go in Palo Alto which has more buzz, but for a quieter, more relaxing dinner with the same food, go to San Carlos.
Rangoon Ruby's is one of our usual places to go in San Carlos, so our expectations are very high. We usually give them a 5 Star rating. The tea leaf salad is a MUST. I had beef kebat this time, and my wife and our friend had a tofu and a vegetarian dish. The food was very good, but not as exceptional as usual. Maybe it was just an off night. SO, ye will will definitely go back. The service was excellent as usual though.
Have been yo all your restaurants in Palo Alto, San Carlos and Belmont many times
Always order tea leaf salad and the waiter didn't put the fresh squeezed lemon juice on
It. I had to ask another waiter
We really should not of been charged for that item.
What is going on with your service😩
We really hope it was just that the kitchen had an "Off Night".
We have eaten in this restaurant (and other Rangoon Ruby's) more than a dozen times. We have always loved it! The green mango salad has always been just about the BEST salad We have ever had. Likewise the garlic noodles were always a "must order" item. But on this visit, the Mango salad was "good", it was not GREAT! The Garlic Noodles, another of our favorite "MUST HAVE" items, (we opted to add the shredded duck) had very little flavor and that flavor tasted "off". We even sent them back to have the kitchen try again. The second order was not any better. We had started with the calamari appetizer. We hadn't had that before and thought we'd give it a try. It was okay, just okay, and we knew we wouldn't be ordering it again as we knew (or thought we knew) that all the other food on the menu was far better.
What happened? Is there a new chef? Did the restaurant alter their recipes? Has the quality of their ingredients changed to save on cost?
What happened to this wonderful "Go To" restaurant ?
In hopes that it really was just an "Off Night" we will go back at least once more. And we will visit other locations, again, too - to make sure this is an isolated problem.
But the fact that the restaurant was much less crowed, than what we have otherwise experienced, makes us fear the worst.
PLEASE!!! RANGOON RUBY, GO BACK TO THE OLD WAYS!! Your food use to be GREAT!!! These new changes are NOT WORKING!!
Much better than average Asian food in a pleasant dining room -- though a bit crowded, which makes for too noisy a space (depends on what time you go, of course). Salt and Pepper calamari was average, but transformed to very good by the sauce it's served with. Garlic noodles should be much garlickier. If you like spicy, say so . . . "medium" spiciness of Shrimp Kebat was almost undetectable. Don't miss the Tea Leaf salad, an unusual and delightful combination of tastes and textures. Wines by the glass are very badly overpriced. All in all a good dinner, with room for improvement.
We loved this restaurant. This was are first time here, we've been wanting to come here for a long
time. So we decide to try it on Valentine's Day. The ambience was nice as well as the service. we ended up choosing the special menu for that day. The food was delicious. We will definitely be returning to this place. There is so much more on the menu that we have to try.
Thanks for making our dining experience a good one.
We shall return.
