Reserved table but they wouldn’t seat us until all four of us were even though it was just one parking and half the restaurant was empty so we around in the way of people going in and out of the entrance while our table sat vacant.
Food was extremely salty.
Passed by the evening before and saw people seated and eating having just been served their food at 9:45 at night while the waitstaff started stacking chairs onto the tables that weren’t occupied. Should have known better. Service in restaurants is increasingly being compromised as a get em in and out as fast as possible seems to be the new mantra.
Great except for the noisd
Always good food, great ambiance. tea leaf salad is the best! Parking and nearby road work makes getting to the place a challenge!
Food was great, service was terrible. If you can’t keep up in the dining room and at the bar, reduce your reservations. Also, it’s a small space, they are trying to fit in too many tables/covers.
Tea Leaf salad is still to die for. Mango swai was delicious, as usual. Fiery tofu vegetable kebat was tasty and had just the right amount of heat. I love the sunlight.
We had a very nice dinner ! Smooth and efficient service, great food !
I do not usually write review if the restaurant experience is as expected. We had a good experience with this restaurant before this visit but we are never coming back again.
We were 20 minutes early but the hostess was able to seat us after 5 minutes so long as we promise that we will finished in time for the next reservation. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant but it was 20 minutes before the waiter took our order. He said he will bring dishes to the table as they were made. We waited for at least 20 minutes and we did not even have our appetizer. At one point our waiter told us our food was coming soon. In the mean time food was served to 3 tables with patrons who were seated after us. One of them was the table next to ours. They finished their dinner and we still have no food. Our waiter kept walking through the other side of the restaurant as if he did not want to encounter us.
Eventually, my husband went to talk to the host and he just said that some dishes took more time than others. Instead of being polite and help us check on our order, he appeared to be blaming us. We did not order anything special. He said our lemongrass pork was what the problem but it was not the last dish to get served. We were almost at the point of walking out before our dishes were served. Later on, other staff came and asked if we were finished, wanted any dessert (which I planned to but decided against it due to the unpleasant experience). We then got the check from a different waiter. Once again we waited while many staff members walked by our table but no one picked up our credit card to process. In the end, we just put cash on the table and left. My husband still left a $10 tips as he said it was Christmas Eve. I gave $2 directly to the bus person who kept refilling our water glasses.
I had dined there previously so wanted my husband to enjoy it too. It was my 86th Birthday so a very special occasion! The welcome and seating were friendly and our server was outstanding through out. He paced the meal well, and the low lights and intimate atmosphere we had selected worked perfectly - along with outstanding food!
The capper came when we asked for the check and were told that our meal had been comped! We had not really mentioned our destination to anyone and could not ascertain who was giving us such a gift. After coming home, I waited until near closing time and called - speaking to the nice young woman who had seated us.
She checked and found that two women seated near us had enjoyed watching our enjoyment and thought we were CUTE! Hilarious and so noice!
We plan on describing all this to the local Palo Alto paper thanking them, and mentioning that we will contribute our same amount to Second Harvest!
What a lovely Birthday!
The food was delicious: tea salad, samosas, spicy shrimp, sesame beef, garlic noodles and coconut rice. The chicken curry was very disappointing. It was made with dark meat and had a very thin sauce.
Our server, Amy, was excellent.
I've always enjoyed the food here, especially the tea salad. I also like that Rangoon Ruby can adjust the spices to your taste. So, though my earlier experiences have been good, this one lacked due to being ignored for 100+ minutes. I finally had to get up and go to the receptionist to get my bill and pay the bill. I still like the restaurant, and I'll be back, because anyone (Eric) can have a bad day.
We celebrated our anniversary here. It was great atmosphere, service, food and cocktails. Would recommend.
I was a frequent patron of Rangoon 2 years ago and went back recently only to be served Pad Thai soup. There was far too much sauce and it was unpalatable. I will not be going back.
Food and service were just okay. I liked the restaurant but I have been to other Burmese restaurants where the food was better. The waiter was nice but because they were so busy the wait for our beers from the bar took an inordinately long time. Would return but probably will go elsewhere first.
Cocktails are half full and most of the drink is ice. Save your money. Tea leaf salad is awesome. Eggplant and lamb are excellent. Hostess gave our request for specific table away despite confirmation on phone one hour before! Go figure. Bar disappointing but food is pretty good
It wasn't busy, so the noise level was fine. When it's busy, it can be very loud!
I love so many items--the garlic noodles are soooo good!
Tea was hot water and tea bag, more like Hilton breakfast tea than any authentic Burmese tea
Tea leave salad was best!
Noodles seems to have too much sweetness to it than much flavor to it.
It seems to have gone downhill. The salad they are well known for (tea leaf) has no spark. It's just not as good as it once was.
I’ve been enjoying Rangoon Ruby and Burma Ruby for years and recommend them highly. The food is consistently terrific!
We enjoyed our dinner very much. The only downside is that the restaurant is very noisy so it's difficult to hear your own conversation. Food great. Service terrific! I would go again and highly recommend you do too!
Very good food and wonderful service. Good drinks and active location.
First, note that the restaurant reported me as a "walk in" even though I had made an online reservation. This meant I received NO Open Table points --and I think they did this so didn't have to pay Open Table a reservation fee. So they lied. It was so noisy we could hardly hear one another. Tables are squished together. Then I Googled them and discovered the owners have been fined MILLIONS for cheating workers of pay--unpaid overtime, taking tips from workers. Unsavory owners. I'm never going back to any of their restaurants.
Attentive but not intrusive service. Delicious Burmese cuisine especially the tea salad -- I wish I had some right now. The staff recommends planning to share each dish, and the portions are large enough to be satisfying. Rangoon Ruby is a great spot for an early dinner before a movie at the Aquarius theater across the street.
We had an enjoyable meal here, other than the fact that the receptionist ignored our request to sit by the window. The drinks were delicious, followed by the wonderful tea leaf salad. Then we had 3 of my favorite dishes, lemongrass chicken, mango swai, and eggplant shrimp. The level of spiciness was perfect.
Amazing food and service! Our waiter was outstanding.
The service was amazing. The food was great! You must try the tea leaf salad as you will not be disappointed! Must try!
The tea leaf salad is always so good! And the curries. Definitely will keep going to this restaurant when in Palo Alto.
Excellent food as always. Tea salad if fabulous, lamb kabat wonderful. Many great items on the menu.
For the second time in a row, one of our main dishes arrived 15 to 20 minutes after all the another dishes. It was impossible to get the attention of wait staff, and even things like the rice to go with the main dishes didn’t arrive for an additional 10 to 15 minutes
Really good meal - there were three of us We had the tea leaf salad which was very good. We ordered 3 different chicken dishes and some coconut rice and everything was excellent.
We got there at 6 pm with a reservation. By 6:30 it was completely full - that tells me that the food was good.
We come back again.
Food was very good. Tea leaf salad had great flavor. Also liked the lemongrass chicken and walnut shrimp.
Service speed is always interesting to assess. Too slow is bad. You want efficient and attentive service. However, it can cross a line when it is clear that efficiency and speed is not about giving you a good experience, it is about turning the table. Felt this from the minute we sat down. This was a Saturday evening. I could tell by the drive of the waiter to take the order and get it to the kitchen that we were going to have to fight to be there for longer than 30 mins. I told him 'we are not in a rush'. A minute later came our salad. No problem they are pre-prepared in the back for serving but zero thought that we may be out for an evening meal, not to race off to somewhere else. About five minutes later came our entrees. We had literally been in the restaurant for about 15 minutes and were served the full meal. Actually there is some irony because despite the fact we ordered rice, somehow they forgot to bring that. Waited several minutes, probably 10, before that showed up. It was just paced so poorly that I cannot imagine going back.
Then the bill comes. They have added an "ACA Surcharge" of $3.50. I asked the waiter what it was and he said it was to cover the additional cost of Obamacare (Affordable Care Act). wtf? Have no idea what political message this is intended to send but I am totally annoyed it is being sent to me through the bill (or at all for that matter). Add a $1 to each entrée if you must but to call it out and emphasize they are asking me to pay it is pathetic.
Great food but I will never go back and if anyone asks me, they will hear about this experience.
We had to wait for 25 mins to get out table. Food and service was outstanding
The curry beef is not very flavorful and it doesn't have any vegetables.
This is one of our favorite restaurants in Palo Alto, but on this particular night, the service and food were both disappointing. The service was extremely slow. Perhaps the kitchen is understaffed. And the food was really bland. We like a little spice, at least. But we will go back, in hopes that it was just a off night.
The food, as always, was delicious. Our server was attentive and quite pleasant. We appreciate not being rushed, as we had not seen our friends for a while. It was nice to relax and catch up.
Food tasted old and not fresh. We went with the waitress recommendations and the chicken dish tasted old. The fish dish was extremely salty but no real flavor. Also, usually the waiters ask what spice level you want and she didn’t, so we ended up with no spice at all which was unfortunate. We didn’t think of it when ordering so partially our fault for not asking but they always ask.
It was an excellent experience--as always! Their food is unusual and interesting.
Always fresh. I go early because it gets a bit noisy for an older person with some
hearing issues when the restaurant if full.
As a true food lover looking for unique culinary experiences, I am pleased that this has become one of my family's all-time favorite restaurants. My teen-aged kids love their tea leaf salad and the sesame beef, and their samosa soup is amazing. Every dish I have tried at this restaurant has exceeded my expectations.
Recommended by a friend. Entree choices varied, many of them. Husbands pork curry came in large chunks(we had no knives)and was not tender. My lemon grass chicken was a better choice. Drinks were average if expensive. It was noisy, tables crowded together, kitchen or service slow.
Amazing food and service, good value!
