The "Empress legend" lives on at "Q", with extremely attentive yet discreet staff. Friendly and professional, with an eye for detail without being intrusive.
Our party of four ordered different meals, and each one was beautifully presented and as interesting as the next! There was no "entree envy" as we were all pleased with our choices and were also willing to share.
There was one little "glitch" with timing, with entrees arriving before one in our party had completed starters. It was the waiter who observed this and was very quick to apologize and make up for this slight glitch with freshly crafted blackberry sorbets for all, even though none of us were concerned he wished to correct this small oversight. As one would expect, quality and price matched, and the service one would hope from a well established landmark in Victoria didn't disappoint.
On a scale of 1-10, our dinner was a superb 10.
We returned to the Empress to commemorate our wedding anniversary, having been engaged there several years ago. Both the food and service were excellent and the hospitality unsurpassed. However, the restaurant's recent remodel created a noisy and glitzy space far from the romantic and intimate atmosphere we remembered and hoped to enjoy. We understand that things do change but nonetheless, we miss the "old" Empress.
Wonderful dining experience. Beautiful hotel and restaurant at a perfect location. Our waitress Madde was professional and made sure every detail was attended to. She and the chef were more than accommodating with special dietary requests.
Excellent fresh vegetables, creative dishes, meat and fish really good and well trained and informed servers. Only issue: we took some time to pick a wine ... which was out! Replacement suggestion by the sommelier worked really well for us though.
The lunch was outstanding. Had short ribs, fingerling potatoes, and carrots. The lunch I ordered even included charcuterie and dessert. One of the best lunches ever !
We had our wedding dinner there. Doug, Will and Heather made our night better than ever expected. Just the best service ever.
Music from bar made it too loud to talk. Change of table helped, but still too loud.
Really enjoyed our dining experience. We will bring other tourist friends back for sure.
Great food with great service!
Everything that we had tasted amazing!
Would come back for sure:)
Roast duck was superb. Waiter was excellent. Service was timely
We had read a number of poor reviews prior to reserving at the Empress, but decided to try it for our special occasion 40th Anniversary dinner. The experience started out well, but quickly deteriorated. The $48 appetizer was less than 5 bites of food. The entrees, all expensive, were bland and uninteresting. The service ranged from inattentive to totally absent. Totally disappointing. I much preferred the formal, traditional service/menu from the former gracious Empress Dining Room. We won't be back.
Expected an amazing dinner at such a famous hotel!
Disappointed by overall quality of meals to the extent that we would not want to eat there again in our 6 night hotel stay
Excellent food, excellent service, live music. A definite if you are in Victoria, BC.
Was extremely disappointed by the lack of ambience. The noise level was extremely high and the tables were crowded - so much so that it was almost impossible to have a private conversation of any kind. We could hardly hear the singer in the lounge who, given the fact there was no one in the lounge, must have been playing for diners. The duck was "rubbery" in texture and had little taste - was expecting far better for the price. We won't be returning any time soon.
Absolutely wonderful !!
Amazing and friendly service! Outstanding experience!
Very nice restaurant with delicious food. Service was great. Even the chef came out to check on our meals.
Mediocre food; erratic service; horrible, atonal music that was not music to dine by. The room was magnificent in a spectacular old and storied hotel. But our dinner was very, very disappointing.
The staff were courteous, formal, and kind, and the food was excellent. Without hesitation, I highly recommend that you cap off your visit to Victoria with a dining experience (or 2!) at the Empress.
Anniversary and Birthday
Our cruise ship made a port stop in Victoria BC.
We pre-booked the Q at the Empress Hotel.
We heard wonder reviews about it. We were very glad we reserved a table!
Exceptional service from the entire staff
Food was delicious. Server Maddie was outstanding. Noise level was beyond “energetic “; it was difficult to carry on a conversation.
We were well taken care of at this restaurant. Maddie is a very accomplished and sensitive server, very knowledgeable about the menu. We felt quite at home with her. Manager Doug came round to greet us and is also an asset to The Fairmont. The menu is very creative and the food delicious. We will definitely return.
I took my girlfriend to Victoria to celebrate her birthday. We stayed 2 nights at the Empress and made dinner reservations at the Q for dinner on her birthday. Upon checking in, we were given a ticket for 2 free drinks after the clerk learned we were there to celebrate her birthday which was very nice.
The atmosphere of the Q was very nice and relaxing, with live music in the background. We each ordered the duck and also got oysters on the half shell and bread as an appetizer. The oysters were fresh and delicious as well as the homemade bread with butter and sea salt. The entree was delicious, the duck was cooked perfectly and the flavors and presentation on the plate was beautiful. The waiter was very accommodating and personable. The service was great, the restaurant was not very busy so we felt we probably got extra attention because of this. I had left a note when making the reservations about us celebrating her birthday, and after dinner we were given a complimentary piece of cake with happy birthday and her name written on a piece of white chocolate! She was very happy and we would definitely go again.
This was a very disappointing dinner for the price, all five of us had complaints about something, duck super tough, spot prawns impossible to eat due to tempura batter with all shells on! I live In the San Juan Islands and eat spot prawns all the time, you do not eat the shell, I know not one person that does, it ruins the texture and flavor. Super expensive for a marginal meal. Ambience was nice, pretty color palate.
One vegetarian in our group. Vegetarian Option portion size was far too small. We all wondered where the rest of the meal was.
Thankfully I had the steak and it was wonderful.
Staff and service are excellent.
One of us ordered from the regular menu and enjoyed her meal. The other diner ordered the q in 60, which was very disappointing. She ordered the trout, which was fine, but the side—chick peas and arugula— was inedible. Literally inedible: the chickpeas were the texture and flavour of mini styrofoam balls.
Our server reported our disappointment to the manager, who offered to delete that dish from our bill.
Great bar and friendly server. Food at Q was disappointing. Overcooked duck and a muddle of mediocre tastes. Q server seemed uninterested. A real let down.
Great special occasion meal. We tried the seafood charcuterie which was very creative. Main course of pork cheeks was a little too salty for my taste. Souffle cheesecake was amazing even for a person that doesn't like cheescake too much.
Excellent food across the board. Pricey, but worth every penny. Chefs are magicians, staff is excellent, knowledgeable and friendly.
We were arranged at a dark corner of the restaurant, although there were lots of tables for four people when we arrived. The food was way too slow. We told the server that we were in a rush because we booked a night tour at 9:30pm.
We were seated at the restaurant at 8:00pm. According to the manager, our orders were passed to the kitchen at 8:22pm. And we waited for nothing on our table for a long time. Finally, we got our food at 9:05pm! One hour waiting with nothing on our table!!! That’s the worst dining experience I had. The serve and the manager kept emphasizing that the lamb and steak we ordered require some cooking time. But it is unbelievable that we have been waiting SOOO long!!! And we paid our dinner in full price, without any discounts or sorry-for-the-waiting-dish.
Great service and good food. Beautiful room.
Amazing value for lunch and great service!
We were in Victoria from a cruise and wanted to have lunch at the Empress. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and the service was good but not great. The food is very good but like most quality hotels, a little on the pricey side. Everyone should experience this beautiful hotel at least once.
As usual, Q is an excellent choice for a nice dinner out. The prices are high, but the quality is there. We found the service a bit slow, and had to ask several times before getting water refills. Food is excellent.
The room is spectacular, the service wonderful and charming, the meal was delightful and memorable
Very accommodating staff. All very friendly and professional. Our server Raymond, was extremely knowledgeable, attentive and patient. The food was delicious, with lovely presentation. We really enjoyed our experience. The Jazz band was spot on and played beautifully. We relaxed in the lounge after dinner and enjoyed an amazing cocktail. We will be back again soon.
Amazing food, service, and cocktails. Well worth the price with an intimate setting. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful ornate with gold and glass. Be sure to check out the gin menu.
