Plowshare is a locally sourced Diner located in the heart of Calgary within the incredible, historic Grain Exchange Building.

Built in 1909, the Grain Exchange was the centre of commerce in Calgary. When farming and ranching drove the economy, all produce was local and most people knew their neighbours. With its ornately carved sandstone facade, it was also the city's first "skyscraper".

We at Plowshare, are proud of that legacy and aim to bring delicious, nutritious cuisine that showcases local producers in a relaxed setting with a neighbourly feel.

Our name comes from the saying used for millennia "from swords to plowshares" and is often used to symbolize creative tools that benefit mankind.

The service we received was prompt and excellent. I ordered a stuffed mushroom french toast, and my companion ordered a burger. My french toast was drenched in white sauce, with some sauteed mushrooms between 3 pieces of french toast. While it was tasty- it was not worth the $16 price point. My companion ordered a burger which he said was okay. Both of us left feeling a little queasy after the meal. I do want to compliment the generosity of the kitchens- while we were there, two men came in from the street- and asked if they had any food to spare. The kitchen prepared them two boxes of chili- the men offered to pay what they could afford, and the owner refused to take their money.

The food was really quite good, except the main meat protein on the menu- duck- was unavailable (which was odd considering the restaurant had been open for only an hour and it was a Sunday) and we weren’t informed of this until after ordering. Considering this was essentially the only meat protein offered for brunch, it was disappointing that it was unavailable and the waitress had no suggestions for an alternative.

There were a lot of flies in the restaurant which is always troubling. The waitress wasn't up to speed on what menu items weren't available that day. The food and wine were okay. My only previous trip to the restaurant was only after it had opened for a week or two and was very poor (wine was off, service was mediocre) but I decided to give it another chance close to a year later. I don't want to give it a total thumbs down but I won't be giving it another chance.

A fine brunch but the day we were there, their two unique specialties, (duck and orange ricotta pancakes) were unavailable. The setting is cool and unique, and if you’re in the area it’s not a bad option, but nothing that made it stand out that day.

I made a reservation through OpenTable for 6 PM last Friday for a family member’s birthday. We arrived to a sign on the door saying that the restaurant was “closed due to a mechanical problem.” We were left to scramble for an alternate restaurant on short notice. It was very disappointing not to receive advanced notice that the restaurant was closed from Plowshare or OpenTable. After this experience, I will be very hesitant to return to the restaurant or recommend it to others.
