Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Pelato in Charleston delights diners with "absolutely delicious" Italian cuisine and "excellent service." The small plates are perfect for sharing, allowing guests to taste multiple dishes. The atmosphere is lively and vibrant, though it can get "extremely loud." Standout dishes include the vodka pasta and garlic bread with parmesan.

A great experience by the new kid in town, Pelato! Raleigh, our server, came with the menu knowledge and recommendations that didn’t disappoint! Food was tapas style, and allowed you to taste many different dishes while not having to make too many difficult decisions, just get one of everything! Flavors were outstanding, and executed perfectly. Service style was unique in that you had a server to shepherd you through up through the menu, but everyone else worked to bring out food and drinks. A real team atmosphere. 10/10, will return!

Raleigh will be so happy to hear the shoutout—and we love that the team atmosphere and shared-plate style made your visit memorable. Can’t wait to have you back for round two! -Alexis, Service Manager, PELATO

Cichetti is the Italian equivalent to Tapas. Pelato's small plate experience is a most effective dining event. We began with a satisfying caprese with a firm mozz bedded on sweet tomato both dressed by a delightful balsamic. Then came fried calamari so lightly crisp and the peppers a genuinely fine accompaniment. Two distinctive pasta dishes followed: the absolutely finest gluten free pasta I have had in my multi-continental experience dressed in a effectively spiced sausage crumble sauce and a second pasta, a marvellous campanelle dressed in a well balanced lemon cream sauce that Sue lingered over with delight . The meal was complemented by a crisp Gavi Marchese. The birthday dinner was completed with Pelato's birthday table fireworks and sweet Budino and refreshing pistachio gelato, oh the bits of nuts with cappuccino and an espresso. Without question, from the moment we were greeted at the door to the last drop of coffee passed our lips, a memorable dinner.

Thank you for this beautifully written review. We’re so glad you enjoyed the full cichetti experience and that each course - from the caprese to the final sips of espresso - made the evening special. It means the world to us that you chose to celebrate a birthday here, and we’re thrilled it was a memorable one. We look forward to welcoming you back for more unforgettable moments! -Alexis, Service Manager, PELATO

Hostesses had an attitude. The one couldn't find my res and when I showed her my phone she miraculously found it and said it was under another name. Huh? My open table account is under my name. They didn't have Chardonnay so when I asked the waiter if I could taste a wine he said no, they aren't allowed to do that. With this attitude from the staff Pelato won't make it long run here. We treat people kindly.

The food here is very good homestyle Italian, like my southern Italian grandma used to make. The food overall is priced similarly to many of the better Charleston restaurants however $7 for 3 slices of garlic bread and an extra charge for a little bit of sauce and a little bit of cheese ( we were not told about the extra charge when asked if we wanted it) is ridiculous especially since there is no other bread option. My biggest gripe is with their wine, I have never in any Charleston restaurant had a more stingy pour of mediocre wine. My guess is it is 4 ounces for an average price of $15. I also have not been anywhere else where the price of a bottle is costs more than ordering by the glass, the point of buying a bottle is that you get more for your money. I love that they have a patio but when I made my reservation a month ago I had no way of knowing it would be 100 degrees last night. We were at a corner table and it was excruciatingly hot, there are no fans in the corners and the glass door in the corners do not open. They must find a way to fix this, Charleston is not New York, it gets into the upper 90’s most of the summer here. The restaurant was full so there was no option to be moved inside. We were at a party of six and we were all drenched in sweat for the entire meal, what should have been a fun evening was definitely not fun. I have mixed feelings about returning here, we recently had dinner at Volpe and did the tasting menu. The cost was about the same as our meal at Pelato, the food was outstanding, one of the best meals I’ve had in Charleston. The ambience was lovely and the wine (similar prices) was better and a generous pour. I hope when the newness of Pelato wears off they will be more focused on retaining a customer base and fix some of these issues

Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback, it means a lot to hear that our food reminded you of your Italian grandmother’s cooking. That’s the heart of what we aim to share with our guests. We’re truly sorry to hear that other parts of your experience didn’t meet expectations. Your feedback about the patio conditions, wine, and pricing clarity is incredibly helpful and already being reviewed with our team. Regarding the wine, we do follow the industry standard 5oz pour, but we understand it can feel light depending on the glassware or expectations, and we’ll be more mindful about communicating that moving forward. We truly appreciate you dining with us and hope you’ll give us another chance to provide the warm, welcoming experience we’re known for. -Alexis, Service Manager, PELATO

Second time at Pelato, food was very good, the atmosphere is very noisy and it was hot in the restaurant. I would go back.

We were excited to try this new place as there were so many reviews that were positive. It was ok at best. The food was acceptable and it was very very loud. Definitely was trendy but not worth the hype at all.

Not at all impressed. Thought service was good but then they kept pushing us to get more or leave. We felt rushed not at all enjoyable. The food was very salty and not very tasty - salad was good but that was all we enjoyed - appetizers nothing was flavorful, shrimp in pasta was so small and no flavor , pasta with cream tasted like cornstarch and meatballs not good. We had other dishes but no one really enjoyed anything and we were 6. Zeppoli which they call San Ganerro were nothing of the sort and tasted like a donut. I was so disappointed. I thought finally a good Italian place - not at all.
