About this restaurant

Peckham Refreshement Rooms are a small restaurant and bar serving simple but delicious charcuterie, cheeses and French and Italian inspired dishes alongside good wines, beers and cocktails. Located in Peckham Rye in an old Art deco building between West-African hairdressing and Pound Shops it was important to create a social space were everyone feels welcome. Guest are meant to spend time with friends here, gather around good food and enjoy the service of a young team that is proud of the produce served. The interior design reflects this spirit by using very simple and forgotten materials materials from the early 20th century such as Bakelite and seating guests on long shared tables. The overall impression is warm and welcoming.

Booked a table for 4 almost 2 months in advance for a Sunday lunchtime. (Have had fabulous food here every time, and exactly a year ago had a wonderful Sunday roast.) Very impressed with Open Table confirmation and reminder (the day before). With the day-before email, Open Table attached a menu for Sunday Lunch (which we were hoping for); but when we arrived we were told only brunch is served on Sundays now. Having said that, it was very good - but we had booked in the hopes of a choice of roast dishes - just as the menu had suggested, and which we've had before. So £100 for brunch was a bit expensive (yes, we had a bottle of wine). I still think their `other time' roasts are what makes the Refreshment Room so very special. So, lower mark because we didn't get what we thought we'd booked for - but a happy Sunday lunchtime all the same.

The bavette steak was sliced and medium-rare and served with homemade horseradish cream and a pickled walnut, also some toasted bread and watercress. We ordered new potatoes and green beans. All of it was fabulous. Generous portions all round so I'd order only one veg between two in future. Excellent house wine, reasonably priced (for London) at £20 bottle. Happy, efficient staff.

This was a real surprise. Who could I said that behind the train track where some really good peoe that cares for good food. Good service and a fantastic bartender. It's simple but well executed. Had pork belly and it was so juicy and crispy could not help to keep eating other things like sauceges, brea, and salad beans. I had a great time and the place it's quite pretty

Both my dining partner and I were blown away by our meal at the incredibly trendy Peckham Refreshment Rooms. The menu was limited, but we were still spoilt for choice among the great selection of delectable-sounding dishes on offer. We were surprised and a little disappointed when 3 of our options had already sold out by the time we sat down to eat at 7pm. But the food we were served was exquisite in its presentation and execution. The flavour combinations were fresh, modern and exciting, based around locally sourced, high quality ingredients. The sea bream with salsa vierge and the summer truffle risotto were both excellent. One thing that left a slightly bitter taste was that our drinks bill had been inexplicably doubled up, and a side dish which we never received (it had sold out) was also included in the total and it all needed sorting out at the end of an otherwise impeccable meal. Instead of £54, we were presented with a bill of £78. I'm sure these were honest mistakes, but unwary diners might not have noticed, and just paid the larger amount. Check, double and triple check your bill, is my advice.

The staff were universally friendly and efficient and the food was great. I had duck confit with baby potatoes. So good! I will go again very soon.

After a tip off from @GingerGourmand we backed up this meal with a visit to Peckham Refreshment Rooms. Again, a very similar setup - two frontage space with a bar splitting the room and an open kitchen with chefs on show. I never got a look at the wine menu so can't say how it compares with Toast(ed) but we were sitting on 500ml Kernel Table Beer bottles - and for £5 that's super value. But it's worth sitting on with some great cheese and truffle honey. The sardines at £3 for a pair were again great value ( I think I'm going to just keep repeating myself) and were well seasoned and popped with flavour. It's an eat with your hands type of affair - and isn't that the best! There's no plates and just a paper tablecloth. It's like they knew I was coming. The prosciutto that had been packed in paprika had a nice spin to it and the beans dressed in garlic and olive oil had that fresh crunch you hope for when eating cooked greens. I saved some space for the dessert special of Amaretto tiramisu which worked well with the addition of the booze. What I love about these places is that they have a menu that changes daily. It keeps us and them on their toes and you know there's chefs in there stretching their culinary muscles. I will definitely be back to sample more of the wares from these guys and I suggest you do too!
