In 2017, chef Kevin Lee opened highly-anticipated and award winning PAI Honolulu after a four-year search for a welcoming restaurant that offered guests an innovative dining experience, while incorporating familiar flavors and presented in surprising ways. As a former food scientist, chef Kevin brings a unique balance, using the highest quality ingredients with a creative artist’s approach to presentation. Foodies should put this restaurant at the top of their list. The menu is beautifully crafted and every item on it is perfectly prepared. This chef is an innovator; but he does it with care so each ingredient in a dish makes perfect sense and adds to the dish rather than distracting from it, as often happens with other new restaurants. This season’s mushroom lasagne course features a tissue-thin homemade pasta that melts in the mouth. Our hamachi and short ribs were perfectly done. This is the third time I’ve had the hamachi and it always excellent…..Golden crisp on the outside, perfectly light pink and moist on the inside. How he does it, I don’t know. The mango pana cotta was tangy and creamy and the french toast bread pudding was amazing.
The wine list has some excellent and interesting choices. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable and watching the chef and his kitchen crew quietly choreograph the food is a great experience. We can’t wait to go again.

Went here when on vacation in Honolulu. Was so excited and unfortunately a bit disappointed. I think the restaurant was overwhelmed by a large party (table of 12). The time between courses was exceptionally long. We had to ask to have two of the courses brought out together because the meal had already taken over 2 and 1/2 hours. We did the chefs tasting menu. The cornbread was delicious. The turnip cake was outstanding as was the chilled lobster. The style of tako served was not to my liking, personally. The gnocchi was excellent, though I preferred it without the short rib. Both desserts were quite tasty. We sat outside, which may have been a mistake. The music outside was like that in a spa and the outdoor seating is in a rotunda. Bathrooms are also inconvenient and require someone to walk you there and let you in. Overall, particularly for the price it was a bit disappointing. I’m hoping it was a one off and will say - the first 4-5 courses were quite good - but overall not what I expect of a $200/person tasting menu.
We had the summer prix fixe dinner and added on the oysters and shrimp chips. Everything was tasty and the prix fixe portion sizes were generous!

PAI Honolulu is the creation of Michelin Star rated chef Kevin Lee, who unlike some other highly acclaimed restaurants is actually still in the kitchen cooking your meal. The restaurant’s location is a little off the beaten path, located in the retail area of the courtyard lobby of a financial building. Once inside, the restaurant is simple, with clean lines and good materials used in its furnishings. A full view of the kitchen is available, and you can sit facing the kitchen at a court side bar to watch the skilled artisans at work if you choose to forgo a traditional table. The kitchen is immaculately clean at all times, which is very impressive with the different types of food and all the sauces being used.
An eight course chef tasting menu with a full wine pairing is more than $200, so I usually opt for the smaller course tasting menu which is less than $100, although the eight course is definitely worth it to truly experience Chef Lee’s ability to combine a scientist’s technical approach to flavors and an artists approach to presentation.
The items on the eight course menu are not offered on the regular menu. The food is exquisite with many vegetarian/Gluten free options and ample portions even for a tasting menu. The smaller tasting or prix fixe menu items are available as traditional entrees, which when ordered as stand alone entrees cost between $25-45 and come in larger sizes.
They have recently added more inventive craft cocktails, and seem to be trying to improve the quality of their drink menu to match their impressive wine selection. The Absinthe Minded and Thundar Gone Rogue are two favorites off their recent menu.
The restaurant often holds unique events, bringing in celebrity bar tenders or sommeliers to add to the flair of the restaurant.
PAI has quickly become my favorite restaurant in Honolulu.

If you are looking for an establishment that is romantic, centric, tasteful and worth the money, PAI Honolulu is one of the few establishments that has my 5+ star rating and beyond. The staff was extremely professional and courteous and were extremely knowledgeable about the wines. Our Server Nelson is awesome!!!! They are very warm to talk to and give top notch service. My Wife and I were there for our anniversary. We did the 8 Course Meal with Wine Tasting and this DID NOT DISAPPOINT at all. Chef PAI himself was catering to our evening and his blend of food, seasonings, spices and sauces brought out the elegance of EACH and Every Dish. Thank you Chef PAI and thank you and your amazing staff for making our anniversary memorable.

We chose the Chef Tasting Experience. It was truly an amazing evening. Chef Kevin and his team gave us a once in a lifetime experience. I highly recommend sitting at the counter as you are able to watch the precision and dedication of this team. Watching the hard work only added to the wonderful food. Nelson was there to take care of us all evening….he was brilliant….like visiting and talking with a friend.

We were doing a special mother-daughter dinner. The food itself was pretty good, but for that price, you could get more high end ingredients at other restaurants. The service was lackluster. We had to keep on flagging down waiters for stuff. In the end when we’re leaving, there were 2 waiters standing near the door, they stared at us but didn’t bother to sat goodbye or open the door for us (this is not the part that bothered us but what happened next), the waiter trailed right behind us (with my mom opening the door for him), and he held the door for the party right behind us, enthusiastically thanking them and bidding them goodbye while ignoring us. The contrast in treatment was really a sour ending after the 2 of us spent nearly $300 on dinner there!!

Chef Kevin and his team provide an outstanding experience, the best food in Honolulu, in a very inviting and comfortable dining room, with a staff that truly makes you feel welcome and at home.
Best part was the corn bread. Be ready to literally wait 3 hours to complete your meal. Staff is very nice and chef really tries but it’s not worth what you pay. Don’t reserve past 7pm. Plan on beginning dinner 1-1.5 hours after you sit down. Mango desert is amazing!

This is, hands down, the best restaurant in Honolulu. Pai offers the most innovative menu in town. Every dish is a work of art and tastes even better than it looks. No one who appreciates food should miss this restaurant. And watching the kitchen is so entertaining. The chef works so quietly and smoothly with the team…none of the clatter, none of the egos, none of the tension that we witness in some open kitchens. Just an elegant preparation of beautiful food. My wife and I have lived in Hawaii for 17 years and dine out often. Our dinner and dining experience last night was the best ever. The food was both delicious and inventive. The service was a 10 out of 10. The restaurant setting was elegant and quiet. Dinner for two with 2 glasses of wine came to about $275 with tip, so for most it would be a place to dine on a special occasion. Everything considered, it was well worth the cost and a good value.

I had the 4 course tasting menu and it was delicious. I sat at the chefs tasting and it was amazing to see how organized the kitchen is. The only downside to my meal was the entree, it felt very lackluster. I had the hamachi and while it wasn't over cooked, the outside was seared very hard and was dry. There was a swizzle of a sauce on the plate but it needed a sauce. Other than that the other 3 courses (Cornbread, Curry Pasta and Brownie) were heavenly!
Fine dining done very well. Highly recommend doing the tasting menu with wine pairings. Wish I could add more photos. The attention to detail is exceptional here. Will be back

I was amazed that I booked chef’s tasting menu at the last minute.
We were also encouraged by our cab driver that we were headed to fantastic place. Yes, Pai was fantastic! From start to ending the staff were friendly and very accommodating. We waited for counter seating where we saw our meals getting prepared to perfection.
I am not going to describe the dishes I had, it’s something you have to experience it yourself and I will not do the justice anyway.
Prix Fixe menu was awesome. My wife and I each selected different dish choices so we could experience a wide variety of flavors. Very attentive service. Excellent food, not too rich nor too much.

Tucked in a luxury apartment complex at the edge of downtown , Pai is a hidden gem. About 25 tables total and bar, the menu is filled with creative and delicious options from appetizers to homemade gelatos for dessert. Get a drink by the mixologist, enjoy the musters or lobster and avocados, and if the Maitake mushroom is on the menu, definitely get it.

Service and food were amazing! We were celebrating my husband’s birthday and the chef sent over freshly baked red velvet chocolate chip cookies that were the perfect end to a delicious meal! Will definitely come back in the future!
Service was extremely slow. Main course was both undercooked and cold when it arrived. Portions very small even for a fine dining restaurant.
We went to Pai for our anniversary while visiting Oahu, and it was honestly one of the best dinners we’ve ever had. We were blown away by both the attentiveness of the staff and the quality of the food. We reserved kitchen counter seats as well, and it was cool to be able to interact with the chef as the dishes came out.
It definitely is on the pricer side, however the experience is amazing, and I highly recommend their tasting menu to anyone looking for an unforgettable meal.
