Food was absolutely delicious, and our server Andres was delightful!
Overall not as good as expected from past visits. The service was equally less impressive than usual. The food was mostly good. Highlights were the quesadilla de chicharrón, platillo de suadero, and the agua fresca de Tamarindo. Delicious!
The appetizer tacos of chicharrón came almost at the end of the meal. The tortillas holding those tacos together were soggy as though they had been sitting a while. They should double them up if they hadn’t been waiting for service and are just that wet fresh out of the kitchen.
We ordered guacamole spicy as an add-on appetizer. It arrived with very little Serrano chile in it and was not spicy at all. I asked to have it spiced up, and the waiter asked if he could bring some habanero to add to it. That was a surprising suggestion considering habanero is a different type of spice than Serrano. I would have expected more Serrano to be added. But I agreed to try it. The waiter brought habanero salsa to add to the guacamole. I told him I thought he had offered chopped habanero to add. He said they didn’t have chopped habanero. I reluctantly agreed to add the salsa to the guacamole. The salsa kind of ruined the guacamole as the texture and taste changed completely. The waiters solution to fixing the guacamole signified to me that he doesn’t really know the food they serve or how important all the elements are to keeping the standard to each dish consistent.
The waiter asked how the guacamole was. I told the waiter the guacamole wasn’t good that way and that Rosa Mexicana’s was even better (which isn’t saying much) and was surprising because Oyamel’s food is usually perfect. Later the waiter asked if the water was better than Rosa’s. I told him it was, but probably only because they’ve been closed for a year and their water is probably rusty from not flowing all that time. Snark gets snark.
I would still go back but this visit was a bit disappointing and could be indicative of standards dropping due to the pandemic.
We were not very happy being seated in what felt like an alleyway. Would have preferred to be out front. The tent situation felt stuffy and boxed in for someone with some anxiety around tight spaces. Ambiance was definitely negatively impacted.
That said, we enjoyed our ceviche verde and margaritas quite a bit.
I ordered one of each taco, including the special and was pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian options. The lambs quarter and asparagus taco was excellent!
I will say the bean tacos tasted burnt. Almost as if the pot of beans was burnt at the bottom and tainted the entire batch. Not a great taco.
Beef taco was under seasoned and a bit bland.
Fish taco was very good as well.
This is our second trip to Oyamel. Next time I will ask to be seated out front and will avoid the tacos as there are better options on the menu.
Service was great and we definitely felt taken care of if not a little disappointed in our seating.
Fantastic mezcal selection and mezcal cocktails -- authentic Mexican cuisine -- would definitely go back
Incredible food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.
So great to see a restaurant that has managed to incorporate excellent safety procedures during the pandemic. Our servers were energetic and enthusiastic! The food was delicious and the drinks were the right amount of fancy. I had the brisket special and will be back for that dish. All in all a great experience, and bravo!
Never disappoints! Love coming here with family...service is outstanding
Excellent food and service. The margaritas are incredible. Good job on social distancing tables.
Really great food, drinks, and superb staff. This is a must go place. Great place for a date or just hanging with family and friends. Definitely make the trip back Oyamel.
Great service, food, spicy margaritas & first time experience!
Ceviche is fantastic! Highly recommend the guacamole. Tacos were fresh and very tasty. One of our favorite spots when in DC for a Caps game!!
It was a great place to celebrate my husband’s birthday and book launch in Amazon. ❤️
The drinks were amazing!
We tried this place for Cinco De Mayo and it was really tasty! The food was great and our waiter was so friendly and helpful! Everything I had was amazing. The only thing I was not impressed with was the Guac- maybe they have someone new making it or the person wasn't paying attention to the recipe- It was basically a bowl of smashed avocado with nothing else it. The salsa was delicious!
We discovered Oyamel only a few months ago and have been 3 or 4 times now. It is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in the area! You have to get the queso fundido and try all of the margaritas. Our favorite is the serrano, but you can't go wrong with any of them. The salt air foam on some of them is delicious! For food, we love the beef tacos and the arrachera. They also had a lamb taco on special once that was amazing. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order!
Food was amazing! Service was good as well!
This is absolutely one of our family’s favorite places to eat in DC. They have great options for our meat eaters and vegetarian. The service was fabulous and food as always delicious
Our server Stephanie was FANTASTIC . We will return for her service alone . The guacamole was so nice we had to order it twice!!! I would recommend it to a friend or an enemy! It was superb
Delicious food tapas style. Drinks were good but small for the price. With tapas you get to try a good variety of food.
This is becoming one of my new favorites. Tasty and affordable and nice service.
Wonderful brunch experience! My friends were so late and the staff was still welcoming and accommodating. They are doing a great job managing COVID safety and the food was delicious as always.
Our waitress was a gem.
We had the best time! We loved the huevos rancheros for brunch and the margarita with salt foam! The guacamole was some of the best we have ever had.
Socially distant & the guacamole was great
Wonderful restaurant. Great food. Excellent service. Can't wait to go back!!!
Very covid safe! Enjoyed eating an amazing meal in a fun environment!
One of the best happy hours in the city. Service is always perfect. And fantastic mezcal selection.
Very good brunch!
Enjoyed a quiet Sunday brunch! Love the decor. The tortillas chips are best I have ever eaten. Guacamole is a must-try!
One of my favorite restaurants in DC. Great atmosphere and delicious, fun food with lots of options.
Great social distancing practice with well-spaced tables and boots as well as plexiglass shields make dining indoor feel safe if eating outdoor is not an option (and there plenty of space outdoor)!
One of the most amazing features is the complimentary salsa and chips.
Last time we dined, I enjoyed the guacamole, Coliflor frito, Arrachera, and the must have tacos - Chilorio de res and Cochinita
Great margaritas - both Mezcal and traditional Oyamel
Great food! Our server was wonderful as well-she was very attentive and recommended items based on our interests. We were very pleased to celebrate a birthday dinner here! Will definitely recommend this establishment to others!
Absolutely delicious and so much fun. People are incredibly nice and welcoming. Salt air margaritas and so many delicious plates to share - Oyamel is sour favorite.
The entire experience was fabulous!! Very authentic.
Great time with people we haven’t seen in person for a year!
The waitstaff was awesome, food was delicious. The atmosphere inside was festive and fun.
Good tacos, authentic! Margaritas were excellent
