Great service and delicious food. My husband’s Italian and he gave it a big-time thumbs up. We’ll go back again when we are back in San Diego.

We were very excited to try this restaurant as my husband is 100% Sicilian. We felt the food was average. Sauce was very creamy and heavy on my pasta. Tuna with caponata was good although sauce was sweeter than is traditional. We thought it strange that on the cocktail menu it listed the type of wine (Nero D'Avola) but did not say where it was from as is customary on most menus. Silverware was dirty which they replaced on request. Staff members very courteous and there was little wait time for food. There is a lot of outdoor seating which is nice.

Hi Kelli, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m glad you found the service courteous and enjoyed the outdoor seating. I’m also sorry to hear that some of the food didn’t fully meet your expectations. As 100% Sicilian myself, many of our dishes are inspired by family recipes and Sicilian traditions, but we do tailor certain flavors to match what our local guests enjoy. It’s always a balance, and I appreciate your perspective. Regarding the wine list, we often rotate selections based on availability from our distributor. That’s why we sometimes list only the varietal and not the exact origin. Thank you again for your visit and your honest comments. Sincerely, Andrea Owner, Osteria Cotto e Mangiato

I was so delighted by Osteria. It is tucked away from the main Little Italy. I liked that because it is quiet and allowed me to transport myself to Italy in my imagination. It is quaint. The Italian dishes are some of the best I’ve ever had, and the service is outstanding. I had eggplant boulienese. It melted in my mouth and I didn’t want to stop eating it, but the serving size was enough for theee!! Their Italian dressing and my salad met my high expectations and I was so happy I took my friend there! I highly recommend Osteria. It is at 7th and Ash. And if you want to go to Balboa Park in the day and Osteria at night, they are not far away from each other!!

Hi Jodi, Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful review. I’m really happy to hear that you felt a little bit of Italy in our space. That feeling of being tucked away and relaxed is something we care about a lot. I’m so glad you enjoyed the eggplant and the salad. It means a lot that you brought a friend and had such a positive experience. Your recommendation and support truly mean the world to us. We look forward to welcoming you again soon, maybe after another visit to Balboa Park. Grazie di cuore, Andrea Owner, Osteria Cotto e Mangiato

We had a lovely dinner at Cotto e Mangiato. We started with sharing a carafe of Sicilian Spritz. A real value as the pitcher is the price of two single spritz and you get a lot more than that! We shared the burrata salad which was really delicious. I had the rigatoni bolognese, which was delicious and my friend had the eggplant dish, which was also delicious. A great meal, overall.
Osteria Cotto e MangiatoResponded on June 19, 2025
Hi Richard, Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed your dinner with us. The Sicilian Spritz carafe is something we love to share, and it’s great to hear you found it a good value. The burrata, rigatoni bolognese, and eggplant are all dishes we’re proud of, so it means a lot that you and your friend enjoyed everything. We hope to welcome you back again soon for another lovely evening. Grazie di cuore, Andrea Owner, Osteria Cotto e Mangiato

The food was average. My partner ordered the gnocchi with the heated parmesan wheel. He liked it but I tasted the gnocchi and it was very doughy. I had a spaghetti dish and I know the pasta was not fresh made. The sauce was ok, but I've had much better elsewhere. I would not go there a second time.
Osteria Cotto e MangiatoResponded on June 19, 2025
Hi Robin, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I’m glad your partner enjoyed the gnocchi in the parmesan wheel, but I’m sorry to hear the rest of the meal didn’t meet your expectations. While we don’t make all of our pasta in-house, we do use high-quality ingredients and aim to prepare each dish with care. I understand that everyone has different tastes, and I appreciate your honesty. Even if we may not have been the right fit for you this time, your feedback is valuable and helps us continue to improve. Grazie, Andrea Owner, Osteria Cotto e Mangiato

The food and location were great but the service was pretty slow. I think we noticed more because we had a show to get.
Osteria Cotto e MangiatoResponded on May 23, 2025
Thank you, Sara, for your honest feedback and for the 4 stars. I'm glad you enjoyed the food and location, and I truly apologize for the slower service during your visit. Excellent first-time experience at Osteria Cotto e Mangiato! We had apps and a cocktail before a show at the theater. We tried the polpette, the beet salad and the truffle burrata caprese. All were delicious! Definitely a neighborhood gem.

Tasty as always and the nicest staff. The early bird 3 course meal is a great value but it is a lot of food. Come hungry!
