    Southern Comfort in the Heart of Honolulu – Nola Café Review Walking into Nola Café in downtown Honolulu was like stepping into a slice of the South. The entryway and architecture immediately gave off that unmistakable New Orleans vibe — something I recognized and deeply connected with as a native of the Gulfport, Mississippi and Louisiana region. The aesthetics reminded me of the homes and soulful charm that line the streets of New Orleans. It was Mother’s Day, so the line was understandably long, and while the restaurant hadn’t quite anticipated the size of the crowd, the staff handled it with grace. They remained warm, welcoming, and worked efficiently to seat everyone. That southern hospitality was alive and well! As for the food — flavorful and satisfying. We tried the shrimp étouffée, shrimp casserole, and the shrimp po’boy (tip: ask for extra shrimp on the po’boy for that perfect bite). The gumbo had good flavor, though the roux could’ve been thicker; it leaned more toward chicken and rice than the rich, hearty gumbo I’m used to. Still, it was tasty. The only other suggestion: taller tables would be more comfortable for taller guests. But beyond that, everything else — the ambiance, the people, and the food — delivered a soulful experience. Final Thoughts: Great spot with a lot of heart. I’ll definitely be back. Nola Café brought a little piece of home to Hawaii, and I’m here for it. The Mothers’ Day Crew 💕💕

    Brought some visiting friends here on Fat Tuesday. Beignets were not great, cold and a little stale. The worst was the service, though. After I gave a healthy tip, we sat down to a grungy tabletop. I went back to the counter and asked if our tabletop could be wiped. The young woman at the counter gave me a wet cloth to wipe it myself. Anyway, I went and wiped the table, then one of my guests said, “look at the cloth!” It was black with (presumably) road dust from outside. When I went back and showed it to the employee, she said, “we wipe the tables every day, but road dust still comes in” Daily! This is a restaurant, with customers using the tables, one after another, all day, and road dust gathering from outside, they wipe the tables…daily.  I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, that maybe she used “every day” as a figure of speech, but we were there for an hour and a half, and not once did anyone come out and wipe any of the tables.

    We had the strawberry beignets, prosciutto, and breakfast Sammy's. All were very good! The 4 beignets were a very good portion; my daughter could only eat two. Great coffee.
