My family owns restaurants, and I enjoy fine dining throughout the country. We were recently staying at a hotel in San Francisco and had ordered an Uber to arrive on time for our reservation at Nightbird. The Uber arrived late and we found that we were stuck in rush hour traffic. We called them to let them know we'll be arriving late. They were fantastic and accommodated us so that we could both enjoy each selection of the tasting menu, while also leaving on time for the Opera! Nightbird exceeded our expectations with the quality and flavors of their tasting menu, as well as the warm ambiance and exceptional service. I highly recommend this restaurant!

I went with a friend before the opera and had the 12 course meal. The ambience is quite nice, so we were excited. The first four small bites were exquisite. My friend and I kept talking about how the flavor kept transforming with each chew and that was quite special. But the rest of the courses were definitely not as exciting nor even that yummy. The scallop was quite nice. But the shrimp was chewy, the wagyu rib was bland, and the squab (pigeon) was too gamey. And at $650 for 2 people (each with two glasses of wine) way overpriced.

We had booked the restaurant because it is close to the opera. We had no idea that the total cost would amount to over $700 (one glass of wine). Found out that the cost per person for food is $195. When I tried to cancel on the day found out that cancellation fee is $195 per person and allegedly, this is disclosed at reservation. It was not. Perhaps local residents might be aware, we came from LA for the opera. The food is quite good but I would never willingly pay this much if I had been aware at the time of reservation. In my opinion, the food is good but what I liked the most were the very artistic plates and bowls and, unusual in the US to be provided a proper fish knife.

Amazing presentations of each and every course(there were many). The small courses were novel, varied, and pleasing. The server staff was very attentive at keeping the water glasses full and removing crumbs, as well as trying to meet our every need. There were so many courses artistically presented and long explanations of each which were difficult to remember what we were eating, even though we chose good non-alcoholic sparkling wine. We were given a menu, very fancy, with all the courses; however we would have liked more detail, since the menu said only “taste of the ocean,” and a delicious haskap berry sorbet, only “sorbet” on the menu. The servers went a bit too fast in explaining each dish. We were given individual cakes to take home, “for breakfast.” All in all it was quite an experience!

The food is good, the people were great, but none of it was epic. For the price, they need to move up the level of everything. The flavors are too subtle, nothing distinguishing about any dish. The ambience is really no different then a regular restaurant. The connection with the staff and the customer is really quite marginal. There was no engaging, etc. Walking to the restroom, a cart with dirty dishes sitting there. Four different times we had to be very clear that we were not done yet and please do not take the plate. For an 11 course meal, with this price, anywhere else we have been would share the principal, the guiding energy. behind the food. So, it is a good experience, just not great. Lots of potential. I share this review only in the hopes that they can up the game a bit.
