Very small tables making it difficult to share plates, tables WAY TOO CLOSER TOGETHER making it difficult to have a conversation, chairs uncomfortable and when we asked for a booth (several were empty) we were told they are reserved. Wouldn't go back!
Nico Osteria is always our go-to spot for celebrating all of life's happenings. They expertly combine a warm, fun vibe with tons of food and beverage knowledge. I really do feel like this is one of my happy places in Chicago!
A superb atmosphere with amazing food. Just beautiful!
Food was excellent, well prepared. Plenty of choice. The service could have been better. Our server never came over to see if we needed anything or if the food was well prepared. We even had to ask someone to get us our check. We would definitely go again.
We eat here every single time we stay in Chicago
Left the note when booking the table that this is a birthday dinner for my daughter, told the front desk that we prefer the window table with the beautiful sunshine so that we could get some good photos and memories. However the lady in the front still gave us a very tidy spot by the cooking area and left the whole plenty of window booth spots empty...So sorry we had to tell the kid that maybe we could sit at your fav table next time. But Still feel disappointed. Won’t get back. The food is good
Everything was fantastic. Food was incredible. Service was impeccable.
Tables were maybe 4 inches apart, if that. No privacy. They might as well put all the tables together. Food was overpriced and just okay, nothing to rave about.
Food very good. Nice ambiance. Have eaten at Nico numerous times and enjoyed it every time.
Lovely ambiance, incredible flavor, great wine list and fast customer service! Would absolutely go back in the future.
We sat at the chef’s bar and enjoyed watching the chefs assembling plates. We also got to see which were the most popular dishes. Food is terrific. Service is easy and knowledgeable. Definitely on the top of my favorite places to dine list.
Overly salty; long wait between courses, something has clearly changed ...and not for the better.
Need to expand the menu. Pasta serving size are so small. More like an appetizer. Over priced for serving size. With everything a la carte it really adds up and again— the portion sizes are ridiculous.
There were problems in the kitchen on a busy Thursday evening. We waited 40+ minutes between appetizers and entrée. Our waitstaff person passed our table routinely and never once reassured us that we would see our meals in the near future. We were not the only table staring at the food runners, hoping to see their orders. The food was well prepared. My artic char was lovely and spouse and son loved their pasta and lobster dish, which included large pieces of lobsters, claws, etc. We had two appetizers, three entrees, two desserts, and three glasses of wine and one bourbon. Our bill exceeded by over $100 the amount we spent the preceding night at a well loved Randolph Street restaurant. That tab included a $100+ bottle of wine. We will continue to patronize "Restaurant Row" and avoid the Gold Coast.
Lots of hype, but the food was very average, overpriced, service was slow and our server disappeared for30+ mins. The online photos looks amazing, but reality is different. I didn’t care for this place, neither there will be a return. Very disappointing!
More than anything I'll say that we're disappointed with our visit to Nico Osteria. It came highly regarded but I think it was probably mostly locals who seem to revere this place in somewhat a cultish way. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary and were excited to be offered a seat in front of the chef's kitchen. Except it was more of a prep kitchen with very very little activity (we realized the real kitchen was in the back). The restaurant was somewhat full but not super busy, yet little requests took a while. Water and cleanup service was quick and constant. The food was fine but didn't blow our mind, and felt like it lacked passion. All in all it wasn't bad it just wasn't great and in a city like Chicago and with the hype we found online we really had high expectation from Nico Osteria and it felt all so disappointing.
Outstanding food and service. We always make a point of dining at Nico when visiting Chicago.
We eat here regularly. The service sucked, it’s as if the waitress was doing us a favor. On top of that, we went for my daughter’s birthday. My wife had called in advance for them to do a quick celebration right after dinner. They totally forgot about it. Not what I would expect for a restaurant of this caliber. Guessing Nico is on the decline, I won’t go there again.
After celebrating my boyfriend's birthday at Nico last year, we came back again this year to celebrate. The food and drink are delicious and the restaurant has great energy. We ordered the brussel sprout bruschetta, the gnocchi, the char and the chicken - wow, everything was so delicious! We'll be back!
Impressed with array of seafood but also some hearty savories like lamb raviolis. The Madai Snapper appetizer was stunning - diverse flavors included pistachio. Every bite was OMG. Server was great with wine recommendations. Great by-the-glass selection. Very comfortable setting, but on-the-spot servers. I will return.
Wonderful ambiance and service. The pan seared gnocchi is the best! Great spot for a date!
Food was great as always!
The Brussels Sprout bruschetta was amazing! So were the meatballs! Party of 4 and we were stuffed sharing 3 appetizers and the bronzino, which was so flavorful. The service was great, and when we had questions on wine pairing, our waiter was very helpful. You might be surprised at how varied the wine list is - great night out with friends. Nico Osteria never disappoints!
Love Nico because the food is great, service excellent and the ambiance comfortable. It's nice to be able to carry on a conversation without having to shout! Great place for lunch or dinner.
Food was fresh, good and service was great...place was maybe 25% filled for lunch, likely due to low value - prices are far too high for what you receive. If prices were more reasonable, would go back; not sure if b/c connected to The Thompson or for some other reasons, but pricing relative to other lunch options was too high.
It was a really lovely meal. We enjoyed the branzino, two pastas, and the brussels sprouts bruschetta. All were great. The atmosphere is low key and comfortable.
Get together with out of town visitor
This was a first visit for our party of four, and each of us thought the food and service were terrific. I cannot recommend more highly the whole grilled branzino--simply superb. And my spaghetti squash starter was outstanding, too. We'll be back the next time we visit Chicago.
Yes...I would most assuredly recommend Nico to friend. The food is amazing. Wonderful tastes. Alex our server was attentive but not over bearing. We always sit at the "kitchen counter" to watch the chefs.
If you haven't tried Nico...do! You won't regret it.
I don't understand all the 5 star reviews. This restaurant is not a real Italian place. Menu is short and not exciting. The food was super salty and oily. Waiter had to be called over constantly and he mostly ignored us. The bread was a big chunk of dough, olive oil had no taste.
A throughly enjoyable experience. Our server was great at recommending his favorite dishes and pacing the meal so that we could relax and talk. Every dish we had was executed perfectly. We focused on fish for this trip and loved every plate. Don't miss the crudo options. We'll be back again to try their homemade pastas.
I would have given 5 stars if they had not put vinaigrette on the oysters without asking me. Otherwise a great experience.
They wouldn’t allow us in the main dining room with our stroller (babies were asleep) because it would block pathways and cause fire hazards. This would generally make sense, except the place was almost empty, with plenty of room to rearrange tables to avoid blocking any pathways. However, the employees were clearly not interested in making any type of effort, they didn’t even evaluate any possible options, neither did they even pretend to.
Our food was delicious and the staff went out of their way to help us find the perfect wine with our dinner. I return to Nico’s every time I’m in Chicago!!
The food selection was excellent, the preparation and presentation was spot on and the service was attentive without being intrusive. It was an overall positive dining experience.
Food was fantastic and ambiance amazing! Service was amazing as well.
My wife and I went for breakfast. Beautiful, relaxing place. Great service. The highlight for us was the Brussels sprouts bruschetta! Amazing combination of flavors and textures.
It was a very inviting, warm experience. It was my birthday and the servers were very nice and even gave us an appetizer on the house.
The food was delicious specially the brussels sprouts bruschetta the wait staff were very attentive definitely I will come back!
