Nico Osteria Ratings and Reviews
We like the menu here generally and a typically fun/bustling vibe. However, during our most recent visit we were rather disappointed. The food was decent enough, but a bit pricey for what it is. For example, the truffle cacio e pepe was good, but not $36 good... I love truffle and I love that dish on any day but didn’t see how the taste justified the price. Par for the location to be sure, but was not “wow’d” overall. Very touristy. (Again, par for the location.)
Nico osteria was fantastic. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful and accommodating. She really was attuned to the mood and flow of the table. The food was fantastic. Outstanding and a gift from the kitchen was the Brussels Sprout bruschetta. Wow. Everyone's meal was delicious - orchietta with tuna sausage, bolonese etc. The restaurant is casual in feel. High end in food and service. Wine list is huge by Italian regions. Again server knew her stuff and steered us exactly where we wanted to be in price and type. Will be back!
Our experience at Nico was outstanding, largely because the food, service, and ambience - all elements needed for a total dining experience - were wonderful. Our starters included raw fish, beautifully prepared and excellent quality. We split a whole fish (Branzino) for our main course. It was superb, and we want to do this again. Our server, Adrienne, made the entire experience perfect. She was very knowledgeable about menu options and portion sizes, and when we asked her to recommend wines by the glass that paired well with our menu items, she had no hesitation about doing so. We loved her choices! She was always "there" when we needed her, always upbeat and willing, thus making the entire experience stress-free. Fortunately, we do not live too far away from Nico, and we definitely plan to put it on our list of "regular" restaurants in Chicago.
Excellent all around. We had the Chicago Restaurant Week menu. We’re used to enjoying Nico at regular price. This menu was a great bargain. No skimping on portion size or quality. Generous and flavorful salad. Orzo pasta with quinoa and shrimp was yum. Both desserts were terrific. We may go back again before the week is over.
I was so disappointed in the food and the service. Everyone in our party ordered from the restaurant week menu and the meal lasted 2 1/2 hours! The best part of the dinner was the bread and wine. The service was extremely slow and the restaurant wasn’t even packed. Our server offered no explanation to the very long wait between each course. A little attention would have gone a long way. The food was overall average or below. The highlight was the veal meatballs appetizer and the potato soup- both starters. The salad was dry and bland, the swordfish was barely warm. The pastas were just ok. I will not be back.
This was my first experience where I did not agree with a majority of reviews. Food was bland. Oysters had no flavor, Crudo chef's special all tasted fishy, tuna app was fishy and bland, ribeye was also missing flavor. Nico's Old Fashion was good, waiter was good. Disappointed as all their other places are awesome. Would not go back
From the time I walked in the door 10 minutes early, I could tell this was not going to be a pleasant dining experience. The hostess was very unfriendly and unwelcoming . The waitress had no warmth. We wondered if we were treated this way because it was restaurant week so our business wasn’t needed? The food was outstanding. It’s just too bad we didn’t feel like anyone cared about our patronage.
Came here for dinner with some friends after work and everything was amazing. Our server was very professional and gave us good recommendations. I tried their seasonal cocktail and it was very well crafted. Tried several items on the menu so we could share and I can't complain about any of the food. Will definitely be back!
We were a group of 9 and fit perfectly around a round table for a great dinner and time at Nico! Loved all our drinks, apps, mains but especially enjoyed the Brussels sprouts bruscetta and raw scallops! The hostess was also incredibly thoughtful and set us up in the bar area after dinner so we could continue drinks and socializing. Great atmosphere too, not too casual not too stiff. I can’t wait to return!
Restaurant week. Food and service were exceptional. The two top table felt a bit squeezed in and view was blocked by granite pillar. Would highly recommend the orecchiette and spaghetti with shaved truffles. The best pasta I've ever had. Tiramisu was beautifully executed.
We were offered “alternative seating” looking into the kitchen which actually turned out to be really cool as we watched the chefs prepare the appetizers and salads. I was impressed with the formality and knowledge of the staff and our Brussels sprout bruschetta appetizer (which ended up being my favorite!) we ordered the swordfish and beef short ribs, both which were good but smaller portions. We also split the cauliflower ravioli which was a very unique fish that I really enjoyed. As usual for Chicago, pretty pricy for the portions, but the atmosphere and experience was well worth it.
Visited during restaurant week. Showed up a bit early for our reservation and enjoyed a drink at the bar. However, our reservation was not honored. About 40 minutes after our reservation time, we approached the hostess to inquire. She offered us seats at the chef's counter. Meal was excellent, but we were not compensated in any way for our inconvenience. Special attention in the form of service or a special drink or dessert would have been a great way to smooth things over. Dinner was delicious and we enjoyed chatting with the chef, but we were late to our show because of the delayed seating. "This is how things go" was the only explanation.
Overall it was a pleasant brunch experience but we had noted on our reservation that we were celebrating a birthday and there was no mention or recognition of it. Friends had come in from out of town for the weekend and this was our cap off so it would have been nice to have it acknowledged.
They Did not honor the reservation. We were Told to sit at the bar with an early evening reservation for two. No apology. Then we asked to be moved and were given a freezing table near the entry door. This happened on our previous visit as well, so it seems to be a policy to overbook.
Very unpleasant experience.
Absolutely fantastic evening. Nico has become one of my favorite venues for a fun, special but affordable night out. The food here is amazing. Exquisite quality ingredients that are perfectly executed. My last few visits here have been so consistent; just a delicious meal from the first bite all the way through dessert. The super friendly service and energetic vibe enhances the dining experience. Excellent beverage program and extremely reasonable prices considering the quality, portions and location. Highly, highly, highly recommend!
Excellent service, ambiance, and food! Extremely impressive wine list. Our server was incredible and offered some seriously amazing suggestions. We were there a touch late and did not feel rushed. We will definitely be back. If you’re looking for some great Italian food, go here!!
