Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. Be sure to try the hamachi rolls, plus the honey walnut shrimp stacked on waffles at brunch.

Everything we ate was delicious, but the service was not great. It was incredibly slow with lots of mistakes. We ordered a few appetizers including a potato salad on the side. The appetizers came out, but there was no potato salad. We just assumed it would come later. One of us ordered the miso black cod (which was delicious), but when it came out it was just the cod, no rice or anything on the side to eat it with. We had to ask the person who dropped off the food (who was not our server) for a side of rice and also to check on the side of potato salad. We waited at least ten minutes for the rice. At that point, we waved down our server to check on the rice and the potato salad; she apologized and said it would be coming. The rice came out shortly after, but our food was cold by the time the rice arrived and there were still no signs of the potato salad. A few minutes later we asked again about the potato salad and she said she would check on it again but that it was coming. Eventually, we finished our meal and just told her to forget about the potato salad. We had to flag someone else down to get our check because our server was nowhere to be found and it was just a slow process. The restaurant was full, but it didn't feel overly chaotic or crazy busy. I would eat here again, but lower my expectations for service.

Food was delicious. Service was great. Size of the portion is on the smaller side so recommend ordering an extra side or entrée

Short rib was excellent … tender and tasty. The shrimp was overcooked. Mari Garden vegetable spring was fresh but dip not like the dipping sauce.

We get to Oahu a couple of time a year and always make it a point to eat here. We love it and this time was just as good as all the time before. Cabbage salad, spicy cauliflower, yellowtail collar, hamachi and ahi nigiri, soft shell crab roll and the Basque black tea cheesecake for desert. We’re off the booze so had a couple of really good yuzu NA mocktails before dinner. Love this place

The food was very good and tasty. Their food is different from anywhere else. It's pricey - little over $200 for two. I guess you are paying for the quality (largely locally sourced) and unique menu items. The service was very good (Kainoa). We ordered 6 dishes for dinner. The first 4 came out VERY quick, but the next two came out separately and took a lot longer. We wanted it all to come out the same time. We also ordered dessert. The portions were small, but tasty. We sat in the side room where it is smaller and the tables are very close together. Everyone will hear your conversation. It's not bad, but lacks ambience. We would go back.
