Mud Hen Water was pleasantly surprising. It certainly surpassed my expectations! Will definitely return when I'm back in town.
This is a very special restaurant. It feels like you are at your surfer Uncle's big beach house and he is an insanely good cook. Indoor/outdoor space. Bring your dog. It's cool. We came for brunch and it was awesome. Try the pancakes and the Sea Board. Really good Bloody Mary's too.
Great chill space for some creative and tasty food. Wine selection was awesome.
Outstanding!! - bring friends who like to share their food so everyone can try a little bit of everything. each dish is unique and yet the flavors all work so well together.
Relaxed neighbourhood restaurant serving inventive Hawaiian-Japanese fusion dishes.
The menu looks intimidating but the waitress ran through it all and explained what all the dishes were. There are lots of vegetarian dishes, and a few meat dishes too.
The highlight dishes for me were the fried chicken, beet pokè, and the miso caramel rice pudding. It was quiet (half full) during our visit on a Wednesday evening but I’m sure it’s packed on the weekends. There’s a lovely outdoor courtyard- bar area to enjoy a pre dinner cocktail.
Want to come back to try brunch! What an amazing experience!!
Went for brunch. Glad we made a reservation. The restaurant was slammed and they had to hold people to wait for a table even though there were lots of empty tables, because apparently the kitchen and servers were so backed up. No one looked happy and some waiting gentlemen eventually just sat themselves down at an empty table because of the lack of attention. It was more drama that we wanted to witness near our table than we would ha we liked. Food was not the same quality it was hyped up to me. Probably just an off day.
This was the first restaurant I’ve ever walked out of. Was excited for my brunch reservation and was immediately seated but no server came up to talk to us. After over 20 minutes we had to flag someone down to take our order, and there was no apology whatsoever for the delay. After another 40 minutes of waiting, we were left with only our drinks and still no one checked up on us. I get that restaurants can get backed up I was more concerned about the lack of communication than the delay. But after staying an hour for 2 drinks and no word from the staff (no one to even refill our water), I couldn’t justify staying so we just paid for the drinks and left. Didn’t feel valued enough for a simple update. Hope this was just a fluke.
The food was very good the service needs to be better but i would eat here again
Service was slow. We had to wave down our server to place order and to get our checks.
The drink was delicious.. Probably would come back for snack and drinks..
Terrific ambiance! Loved the creative ingredient combinations!
Hope to return in the future.
Fascinating menu choices all well-prepared, great cocktails and good service. Just a bit pricy and portions a tad on the small size
Smoke meat carbonara came out cold even the second order.
The cocktails were delicious, but the food was average and did not have any stand-out flavors.
The food is creative and delicious. Loved the akule pupu-- but one must like that fish. Smoked meat carbonara is a meal by itself.
Be prepared to endure a high noise level. Due to the wooden floor, hard chairs , bare walls... it was so noisy. I had a hard time hearing my mate 3 feet away.
Enjoy the unique small plate choices which were delicious and defined the expertise of Ed Kenney.
We went early to avoid the busy crowds and liked that we were serviced immediately and given ample time to make our choices with the wonderful advice of our waitress.
Unique take on Hawaiian Cuisine. Sustainable and reasonably portioned dishes. Amazing vegetarian dishes. Fantastic drinks at reasonable prices.
Creative menu but basic ambience
Funky restaurant. Great experience. Friendly staff
Delicious overall. Amazing miso.
disappointed really... went there to celebrate my husband's birthday, and the taste of the food did not impress. ordered the special dish of the day - kau yuk, or braised pork belly with taro, and the dish came out cold. it was disappointing, won't be back again.
I'm a vegetarian and there were a few appealing options. High quality is evident. Portions on the small side.
Great service and unique food with a lot of knowledge from the staff!!
Very interesting menu, love that there were many local ingredients and flavors.
Great service. Good food and great cocktails. Don’t miss the steam clams.
The ambiance, the food, and the service were fantastic. The quality of the ingredients as well as the creativity in the dishes really shown through. Having worked in the food industry, it was a delight to see uniquely hawaiian dishes done in a contemporary way. My only critique would be that the large shared plates were not big enough to be large shared plates, but rather like single portion plates. Otherwise, delicious.
They were out of a couple entrees by the time we arrived for our 8 pm reservation. Some of the ingredient combinations just didn’t work for me. The hummus was good, but pairing it with the grilled fennel and roasted carrots was not to my liking. The octopus was delicious, but its, for lack of a more gracious adjective, slimy accompanying vegetable was off-putting both in texture and bitter taste. Interesting cocktail offerings.
Service slow as we had to wait 15 minutes for our entrée. Food was vinegary in nature, portions small.
Always up for supporting local chefs and cuisine - Ed Kenney is a visionary and a bright light in Hawaii. However, Mud Hen Water is disappointing. The food is just not that good - the wait staff is wonderful and the decor is cool, but we were unimpressed with the execution and portions. The best were the Chicken Long rice croquettes, the fish, and the desserts. The squid was good but the portion ridiculously small - the rest sounded interesting but were nothing compared to the original dishes they pay homage to. The flavors in the average plate lunch best this out.
Extremely enjoyable! The waitress had great knowledge of the menu.
The food was a treat to the senses!
We liked all of the dishes except the short rib one.
Terrible food service with people’s entrees coming out at disparate times. One member of our dinner party didn’t get their entree until the rest were finished with dinner. And, it was partially uncooked chicken.
Relatively obscure and nondescript restaurant trying to be upscale. Melding local flavors with a twist. Service was slow considering the time and date. 6 PM reservations on a Tuesday (New Years Eve) arriving at 5:55. The hostess had us wait for our reservations at 6 sharp. She was a bit snooty considering the dress code being casual and tables available and crowds thin. I would classify this establishment more as a Tapas bar considering the limited menu selection and offerings.
Excellent food and service! I feel like the beet poke was magnificent, and I wish they sold it by the pound at Kaimuki Suprette!
While all the ingredients (and philosophy) were there on paper, the ingredients didn’t quite come together in anyway. Most dishes were just ok. If you factor in the size of the small plates (very small) with the cost—-memorable dinner for the wrong reason. Highlights —The beet poke was very good but very small portion. Cocktails were innovative.
We wanted a local Hawaiian experience, and this fit the bill. Nestled in what seemed to be an up-and-coming neighborhood, Mud Hen Water is a quaint restaurant with great food. Served on small plates family style and a full bar, the casual dining restaurants had families and friends gathering for dinner.
Don’t miss the beet poke.
We had incredible service for my partners 40th birthday on a visit from Alaska. I have complex food allergies and they wrote a separate menu for me— I was stunned and deeply moved by how well I was accommodated.
Our server, Brooks, was particularly gracious and thoughtful. We are promising to come back for my birthday!
Enjoyed the food! So delicious
Had a nice dinner here the other night composed of a couple of small plates with a large split between us and it was just the right amount of food.
Beet poke was incredible and one of us does not normally like beets but loves poke. Carbonara that we split was also very good. Wait staff was perfect. We had drinks and dessert across the street at Town.
