There is a $20/guest min for table service
Mr. Tipple’s heralds back to a 1950s NYC basement. Cozy. Dark. Boozy. The intimate setting features local jazz artists up close and personal. It’s a joint where you come as you are, hear great music, tap your toes, and sip a properly chilled cocktail.
My name is Mr. Tipple. Just a simple and laughable bloke hailing from London. I run a recording studio. My friends joke that you’ll oft find me spinning cocktails, not reeling tape. After a few too many, I usually just sit back and enjoy the music, having forgotten to hit record. Regardless, the band is always jiving, the whiskey is always cold, and we’re having a smashing good time.

If you're looking for an intimate and exciting jazz experience, Mr. Tipple's is your place. We saw Le Jazz Hot and they were terrific. Note: Mr. Tipples has changed its food menu to Dim Sum, so if you're not a fan of that cuisine, you may wish to eat at one of the many nearby Civic Center restaurants and then go to the later show.
The staff was wonderful, my partner and I were running about 15 minutes late and I texted them to let them know, they kept our table ready and made sure we could still order the first course by the time we arrived. Great service and a wonderful show, their food was quite good! Their drinks were solid, they have a little room for improvement but overall the experience was a fantastic time- I’ll definitely be back!
I love Mr. Tipple's so much. I used to come here prepandemic, but I spendt almost $150 there and was hoping to stay for at least 3 hours and then was kicked out promptly after the show. Had I known this, I would not have spent so much. It's so expensive now :/
Great spot for live music. Definitely pay the extra for the “best” seats if you like being right next to the band; however, all the seats were great.
First time at Mr Tipple's and first time going out for live music since the pandemic. This is a fun, intimate club with excellent cocktails, food and music. Will definitely be going back again.
Great vibes, great music, great drinks. What more do you need?
Phenomenal service and live band. Atmosphere was great. Would recommend on all counts!
Great live music, great ambiance, great service, great times!
Amazing evening! Beautiful venue from the stage, wall paper, under lit bar, great sound, fantastic drinks, inventive & tasty menu to the stunningly decorated bathrooms (yes, bathrooms). We enjoyed "Cosmo and the Alley Cats" band - incredible!
We will definitely go back!
I have been wanting to go to Mr. Tipples for over a year, and I’m SO UPSET it took me this long!! Top to bottom, our entire experience was incredible. I truly cannot wait to go back. The band was fun and energetic, cocktails were fantastic, and overall ambience was just comfy and sophisticated in the best way possible. The service we received was above and beyond! Everything was so refined and well-thought out without feeling stuffy or pretentious at all.
I went here with my friend for a girls night out and it was a blast the musicians are extremely talented and of all experience and ambience is really unique.
Went to see some live music which was awesome. The food was very good and very surprising. We can't wait until things are fully open. Love this place.
We had a great time seeing Lilan Kane and her band! They were excellent. The services was great! can't wait to go again!!
This is an elegant, comfortable, intimate venue. The music was fantastic, the food was very good, and the service was friendly and professional. I would highly recommend it!!
No gluten free veggie options so we coildnt eat anything
It was a great experience, though menu was a little ambitious. We did love the cucumber salad.
Discovered this gem when visiting San Francisco over a year ago. Music is great and the overall experience will keep me coming back.
Amazing vibes, excellent musicians, and strong/delicious drinks. Nothing to dislike about Mr. Tipple's!
Great service there with delicious dumplings and amazing cocktails. Perfect for a date night. I will definitely go back when in SF.
Great music and overall experience. A little hidden gem in the city.
First time at a jazz club. Wasn't sure what to expect, was pleasantly surprised. Beautiful and intimate setting. Dim sum and drinks were yum yum. Great service. Highly recommend it.
This is a music venue. two tables of people talking throughout the musical performance spoiled it for everyone.
When management was asked to politely ask the offending customers to be quiet they refused .
Great music. Great drinks. Good food. Awesome ambience.
Beautiful little bar, super-clean and great acoustics. Staff did a fantastic job getting guests in and out timely for the first of two shows. Prices entirely reasonable for what you get, quality food (currently dim sum) and short list of quality beverages. Definitely will be going back.
An excellent choice for a performer (Kasey Knudsen), but standards instead of originals as I had hoped. Still very good. A couple between me and the band that talked constantly. Terrible background noise from the bar and other guests. Only one vegetarian choice on the menu, $20 minimum per table but there was already a $20 fee per person for entry. I personally won't go back unless I hear there is a much greater commitment to the music, or there is someone I "must" see that isn't playing at one of the numerous venues in the Bay Area that are indeed serious about the music. Presumably they all will be opening soon.
It was amazing! The ambiance of the place was perfect for the Jazz live perfomance. The service was top notch and staff members were friendly and provided effective service throughout the evening.
The drinks were crafted to perfection, and the pok dumplings, although extra spicy, were phenomenal.
If you want a place to enjoy great food, drinks and awesome live music, you shall visit Mr. Tipple’s recording studio in SF!!
After our first of many visits to future ones. We were quite impressed with the ambiance , food, drinks and especially the music.
Wonderful romantic evening. The bar area had intimate tables spread out enough to feel safe and it allowed us to hear the music better without listening in on our neighbor's conversations. The atmosphere was loud but energetic. The band was good, the sound could have been better mic'd. We mostly heard the trumpet. Drinks were STRONG but decent, food came out quickly and was a good value. The service was amazing, never had to wait to order another drink or have my water topped off. Would recommend!
The first time going out to listen to live music post-pandemic, and Mr. Tipple's delivered. The short ribs were amazing and the cocktails were on point. I'll definitely be back!
So happy to be back seeing live music. Beautiful, intimate club featuring great live music! Since I drank wine, I can only say the cocktails looked delicious, and the dim sum bites were tasty. Very efficient and pleasant servers and staff and the COVID precautions seemed thorough and yet not too uptight as we (hopefully) move on to happier, more open times. Highly recommended!
Great experience! Great Service! Great band! I would definitely return.
What a special evening! EXCELLENT music, lovely ambiance, delicious cocktails, and mocha waffles to boot.
I didn’t have a back to my chair and our table seemed to be the only one without, but despite the aching back later that night the experience was amazing. Beautiful jazz, delicious food, fantastic service. I highly recommend and will be frequenting this location, probably just going to invest in better seats for more enjoyment.
Felt so good to be back inside and what an experience to witness a bands first night back after the pandemic. Great night!
It was a great first live music show for us since the covid shut down. Mr. Tipples delivers as well as the musicians they feature. Amazing!
This place is fantastic under post-pandemic opening! Great music, low density “crowd”, not too loud, but still hopping. Limited food selection, so it’s tough if you have any food limitations, but what they had was good. Great drinks. Nice staff. Did I mention great music?!? Paul Mehling’s band is fantastic.
We went to an event on May 6 , 2021, to hear Le Jazz Hot. The advertisement for the event stated that the $20 bar seats provided the best access to music in the room. That was incorrect and very misleading. The sound at the bar was terrible - we could barely the band. I complained to our waiter and one of your folks tried to improve the mix – but to no avail from our position. The speaker nearest us did not appear to be working. The $10 seats nearer the bandstand far better.
My friend’s braised beef arrived an hour after my food was served. I politely waited for his food to come out and ended up eating my food cold after we were told that his food was coming soon (wrong orders arrived in the interim and had to be sent back). My dumplings were very greasy and almost inedible - and friend complained that his beef dish was very fatty.
While my friend waited an hour for food, they brought 2-3 incorrect dishes to us and ended up making mistakes on the final charges which I had to point out and correct the next da.
Ironically the sound in the bathroom was very good – loud and clear – but that was not where we paid to be seated.
I noted these points to the manager, Jay Bordeleau, and he wrote back a very nasty response and banned me from coming back to his club since my guest wrote a review "insulting the music talent" which was totally incorrect and false. (My guest writes a review and I get banned???).
It is very disappointing that management is so callous to those of us that wish to support live music.
Spend your money and time elsewhere.
One of the best spots in SF, by a lot. Music and service have always been fabulous.
Good music, great takeover by PCH and Fat Cat. Bring them back!
